What I've hreard is that The Standells wanted to perform one of their songs, and when they ended up having to do a Beatles song, they threw some monkey wrenches into it! Good for them, because they were SO much better than this!
Actually life was more difficult then. No internet or cell phones. Most things were done by hand (typewriters, fax machines, etc.) The civil rights movement was just dawning. Racial, sexual, and gender discrimination were still prominent (and legal!) in many parts of the country. The US was fighting a war in Vietnam that seemed pointless to many people. I loved the 60's, the music and fashions were great! But it was a painful period in US history.
My brother and I met Grandpa Munster (Al Lewis) on day after the grand opening of Magic Mountain in southern California in 1970, I believe. Years later, I saw Molley Hachet play the same amphitheater at the park where L. A, radio personalities. Loman and Barkley emceed a show that featured Jimmy Durante amongst others. It was the one featured when Spinal Tap opened for the puppet show by intruducing Derek Smalls' Jazz Bass Odyssey...
The Standells rule as far as I'm concerned. This clip shows them doing a Beatle's cover under duress. Can you imagine how killer this appearance would have been had they been allowed to play "Dirty Water" or "Barracuda" or any number of their own classics? Their own stuff was likely too visceral for the producers of the show, and the Beatles were still dominating at the time. They were also barred from using their usual Vox guitars for this appearance. Cheers!
for those that say they lacked energy, that is totally up to the director, style of show etc back then they couldnt let it all hang out, might not have been allowed, but I bet they hated that if that was their only big chance! Great clip thanks!
This is the original bass player and I used to live across the street from him in the 70's. He had a great fear of flying and left the group because they were going to tour S. America. The funny part is they were billed as " Los Beatles de N. America". the Beatles of N. America. Really nice guy.
If you're gonna be on national television AND cover some other group's hit from a year earlier, YOU'd better put a lot more energy into than that! No wonder no one's ever heard of the Stand-ins, uh, I mean, Standells.
Great band -- a shame they got stuck doing a lame Beatles cover instead of Dirty Water etc. The bearded beatnik is future producer Zalman King (Red Shoe Diaries, Wild Orchid, etc.) who specialized in playing young punk-hippie-biker types in the 60s.
@phrogbubba Perhaps I was a little rash. I appreciate anybody who can make the music work. Musically, they're very tight. Don't think this song suits their vocal style, though!
Larry from the Standells was a big fan of the Munsters. So it was quite a thrill for him to actually perform and act on the show! Also, this show was filmed almost a year before the Standells "Dirty Water" became a hit. Visit the Standells Facebook page to learn more!
Shame they din't get them to do some of there own stuff the standells are a fucking ace band in their own right not just some beatles cover band. Maybe the thought 'dirty water' would be to grimey for familly television!
@sturoc0 Just a beatnik on the show but is actually actor/director/producer Zalman King who went on to direct Two Moon Junction (1988), Wild Orchid (1990), and Red Shoe Diaries (1992).
@45spindle yeah, I am willing to bet it was a fun time checking out every episode of the Munsters, I must admit that show was and still is a laugh riot simply because of the concept and the execution to boot. Loved watching reruns of that show on Nick at Nite back in the late 90's.
This is actually a decent cover, not quite as good as the Beatles rendition, but oh my God MUCH better than the terrible Glee Club and Lunarock Sailor Moon versions. You want horrible covers, look no further than those two.

It wouldn't "Play In Peoria" as they said back then...

some of the best Garage/Punk songs that still resonates in this fine century!!!

Now there's a party not to be missed. The Standells playing at The Munsters pad. What a trip!!!
Eddie's hip, Grandpa's smokin", and Herman's blowin" his top.
One of my favorite episodes from this classic TV show.
Remember "Shindig" being on after this on Thursday nights if i'm not mistaken.
WOW!!! Were we lucky!
