One of the most under rated RPG game of all time. The love for final fantasy series put this game in the back burner for so many years. Don't get me wrong. Final fantasy was an amazing franchise but the reason why I love Xenogears more than any final fantasy game was the storyline. It is much deaper IMO compared of any FF games. The song Small of two pieces was deep stuff. I don cry but that song does gave me a little teary.

@gakiyarou absolytely NOTHING beats the feeling that you know you're playing original Xenogears on your Playstation.. it's same any other game.. I admit that i have a rom (shame on me) and when i play Xeno I get that feeling like half of the "magic and experience" is gone by that..

@dr3zit0 Xenogears never got released here in Europe, hence it's not on the European PSN Store. You need to create an American account and buy a $20 PSN card from ebay or something, then get it off the American store.

Man I wished I had played this game back in 98, now rpgs are not as good as it used to be. At the time I did not play rpgs because I was scared of rated T games for some reason(I was a little kid). Now I know this is a master piece and now I am just starting to play it when it comes to the psn tommrow.
@cickmore12 classic style rpgs are not dead and gone my friend, but simply migrated to the portable realm. If you don't have one get a nintendo DS, there are TONS of excellent RPGs on the that system.

@alexander33345 check out some of my newer vids, I've been doing a lot of reviews on older playstation titles. And so far a lot of them are pretty good, not xeno good but still very good. I'm currently working through all the golden sun games (on the first one) and I have been enjoying those.
@mtbx I agree that ff7 has its flaws but i still liked it a lot more than 8, 9 is my favorite atm. Chrono Chross.... is ok, but Trigger is far superior imo.
@RapturousxPoet well i wouldnt say there is anything like it, but if you want to play some great games, I'd suggest Vagrant Story, and Final Fantasy Tactics. Both have a kind of darker grittier feel like Xeno and are great stories, but they have completely different gameplay.
actually xenosaga was its own series that had 6 games 3on ps2, then 2 on gameboy&1 as a mobile gameor a ps2import but yeah Gears supposed to be part 5 in some sort of series as seen in the end credits and you know the rest.
Xenosaga 2 was the only shitty ps2 xenosaga. and the import ps2 xenosaga was just a namco character mash up rpg
Nice review. Xenogears was something I accidentaly discovered back in 99. It is the best video game I have ever played. The music is incredible and the story line is, to this day, untouched by anything else. As much of a FFVI and FFVII fanboy, Xenogears' storyline is on another level. They dont make them like this anymore...
i heard this game's FINALLY gonna be on PSN in english this fall for only 10 bucks (PSN in japan has had it 4ever) so suck it amazon users that want you to pay 130 bucks for this game friggin new DX
BTW, Xenosaga was never supposed to be a sequal, it original was a prequel (bcause xenogears was the 5th in a line of 6 games), but Monolift (which is where basically half the ppl who owned rights to the xeno went to after square merged with enix) decided they didnt want to do it.

The story is far better written and told. The music is superior. Finally the characters are much more personable and interesting.
I don't think you actually played Xenogears, at least not past the desert. Which is a very short part of the game. I also found the second disc to be loads of fun, and a welcomed change up.

final fantasy is getting boring already, i stopped at 8 because that obviously was their checkpoint of gayness for continue~ing a game with the same fight system and shlt. they need to do resurrect xenogears for at least another 2 or 3 sequels or square-enix can go and die.
I was referring to your comment on how FFXII and Star Wars were related. They're similar because they deal with the Empire, have a rebellion, Asch/Leia, stuff like that. I also heard many cracks about how FFXII was Star Wars, etc.

You are right. This is one of the greatest rpg's of all time. It's too bad it was lost in the shadow of FF7. The story of Fei Fong Wong is one of the saddest stories ever told. I don't think a game this complex or ambitious storywise could ever be done again.
i have played both ffvii and xenogears and vii does cast a pretty big shadow,but for good reason. with that said, it is sad cause xenogears was a story i thought everyone should have heard. but honestly if i had to have one of the other i would pick ffvii. just like im sure xenogears touched peoples hearts, vii touched mine. regardless both amazing games.
@ThePope17 Yep. Long story short, I got both at the same time. Played FFVII first (not all the way through). Played Xenogears. Left my sis to play FFVII while I finished Xenogears back then. My first RPG too.
Xenosaga trilogy was supposed to be 5 games to finish a six set, xenogears would be xenosaga 5, But they gave up as it was too ambitious to replicate Xenogears' plot complexity. Xenosaga as a trilogy had less twists and turns than Xenogears.
I like the game but parts of it were in the words of the game "..." to me (the 2nd disk, the insane encounter rate at some parts coupled with a delay before encounters where you can't jump in a portion that requires platform jumping, the "...", etc.)
man i spent like over 120 hours on that game leveling my characters all the way up. was killing enemies without my gear that you would usually need. great game.
sadly i got you beat there, not only did i get everyone max level, but i also took the time fighting mobs and selling loot to buy the +1 stat items from joe at the lighthouse until fei and citan and completely maxed stats-- which oddly enough would cause lock up if you tried to go above the max haha
I actually have heard that xenosaga series has never been confirmed a prequel or sequel. Although the name is similar and twenty members of the Xenosaga development staff had previously worked on Xenogears, including the directer and writer Tetsuya Takahashi.
Xenosaga is a prequel-- but since it was published by a different company they couldn't directly link the characters in them to ones in xenogears, but you can definitely tell the resemblances
I hope they remake this game and make the summarized part of disc 2 playable.

just replayed FF7 and i realized how imperfect it is.... and this was after i beat FF8, FF9, and Chrono Cross. All 3 of those are better than 7, imo.

in terms of awesome story and gameplay this has to be one of my favourite games ever

@RapturousxPoet well i wouldnt say there is anything like it, but if you want to play some great games, I'd suggest Vagrant Story, and Final Fantasy Tactics. Both have a kind of darker grittier feel like Xeno and are great stories, but they have completely different gameplay.

actually xenosaga was its own series that had 6 games 3on ps2, then 2 on gameboy&1 as a mobile gameor a ps2import but yeah Gears supposed to be part 5 in some sort of series as seen in the end credits and you know the rest.
Xenosaga 2 was the only shitty ps2 xenosaga. and the import ps2 xenosaga was just a namco character mash up rpg

Nice review. Xenogears was something I accidentaly discovered back in 99. It is the best video game I have ever played. The music is incredible and the story line is, to this day, untouched by anything else. As much of a FFVI and FFVII fanboy, Xenogears' storyline is on another level. They dont make them like this anymore...

BTW, Xenosaga was never supposed to be a sequal, it original was a prequel (bcause xenogears was the 5th in a line of 6 games), but Monolift (which is where basically half the ppl who owned rights to the xeno went to after square merged with enix) decided they didnt want to do it.

@gakiyarou ehh, wouldn't say sucked, comparatively they can't match xenogears, but all in all, a good story line that is completed with a solid 3rd game. (second one was boring, but u had to sit through it to get the story)

Slow boring beginning involving roaming a endless ass desert, a forest, and other shit. Xenosaga starts off intense. And you litterally talked about the battle system for 5 mintues. Give me ONE good reason why you say Xenosaga sucked.

@gakiyarou those are phrases. lets see whats wrong with this game. the story, characters, battle system. that doesnt mean anything. People complain that the second disk is boring...well if the first disk is boring, and so is the second, than gee the whole game is boring. You obviously havent played any of the Xenosaga games all the way through, let alone the whole series, which is undoutbly better than this. Its not perfect, but better.

@silenthillmaster755 I've played them all, and even have the collectors compilation dvd of all the cutscenes. All the things I mentioned are far superior in Xenogears. Especially the story, but hey - if you don't agree thats fine, opinions are like assholes, everyone's got em.

@silenthillmaster755 yes I have, you're just not paying attention. I believe that the complexity of the battle system (the fuel management, combo system, etc) is a lot more fun. The story is far better written and told. The music is superior. Finally the characters are much more personable and interesting.
I don't think you actually played Xenogears, at least not past the desert. Which is a very short part of the game. I also found the second disc to be loads of fun, and a welcomed change up.

@gakiyarou That bullshit wasn't short that took like an hour! I have almost no idea how i got out of there. the robot fags just walked up to me! The story isnt better, Xenosaga really beats any game stroy wise, its enourmousm, dont even try fighting there. I like turn based combat. and oh HELLLLL NO is the music better, I actually had to laugh at that one. personable and interesting. a robot and a girl that caused the Gnosis phenomenon, right totally uninteresting.

final fantasy is getting boring already, i stopped at 8 because that obviously was their checkpoint of gayness for continue~ing a game with the same fight system and shlt. they need to do resurrect xenogears for at least another 2 or 3 sequels or square-enix can go and die.

I was referring to your comment on how FFXII and Star Wars were related. They're similar because they deal with the Empire, have a rebellion, Asch/Leia, stuff like that. I also heard many cracks about how FFXII was Star Wars, etc.

I agree Xenogears is one of the best games ever made.
Just one thing:
I know that talking about the storyline would take FOREVER and would invite people to argue about it, but i think its worth mention some of it, just the premise or something.

You are right. This is one of the greatest rpg's of all time. It's too bad it was lost in the shadow of FF7. The story of Fei Fong Wong is one of the saddest stories ever told. I don't think a game this complex or ambitious storywise could ever be done again.

i have played both ffvii and xenogears and vii does cast a pretty big shadow,but for good reason. with that said, it is sad cause xenogears was a story i thought everyone should have heard. but honestly if i had to have one of the other i would pick ffvii. just like im sure xenogears touched peoples hearts, vii touched mine. regardless both amazing games.

@ThePope17 Yep. Long story short, I got both at the same time. Played FFVII first (not all the way through). Played Xenogears. Left my sis to play FFVII while I finished Xenogears back then. My first RPG too.

Xenosaga trilogy was supposed to be 5 games to finish a six set, xenogears would be xenosaga 5, But they gave up as it was too ambitious to replicate Xenogears' plot complexity. Xenosaga as a trilogy had less twists and turns than Xenogears.
I like the game but parts of it were in the words of the game "..." to me (the 2nd disk, the insane encounter rate at some parts coupled with a delay before encounters where you can't jump in a portion that requires platform jumping, the "...", etc.)

Xenosaga failed in many respects, but for me the killer was the gameplay.
I just didn't like the gameplay in Xenosaga all that much.
That and Shion was a crappy main character.

man i spent like over 120 hours on that game leveling my characters all the way up. was killing enemies without my gear that you would usually need. great game.

sadly i got you beat there, not only did i get everyone max level, but i also took the time fighting mobs and selling loot to buy the +1 stat items from joe at the lighthouse until fei and citan and completely maxed stats-- which oddly enough would cause lock up if you tried to go above the max haha

I actually have heard that xenosaga series has never been confirmed a prequel or sequel. Although the name is similar and twenty members of the Xenosaga development staff had previously worked on Xenogears, including the directer and writer Tetsuya Takahashi.

Xenosaga is a prequel-- but since it was published by a different company they couldn't directly link the characters in them to ones in xenogears, but you can definitely tell the resemblances
