Maradona's was João Havelange's nightmare. He made the world cup history stinky by rigging the final match. It was a shame to the football world. Even the Germans were let down with that. They deserved to win but not with cheating help. History will always underline that world cup finals with a question mark. I bet João Havelange still wishes he could have prevented Maradona from being the greatest player of all time.

No matter what you would throw at them Argentina would always reply even if they weren't playing great. They were winning games without putting a lot of effort. Goycochea for me was the hero and Maradona was an inspiration.

Germany knew that if they went to penalties they would have lost to Argentina they were trying desperately to score during the game attacking Argentina pressuring them and still couldn't put the ball at the back of the net. The penalty decision in that final was a disgrace. The replay clearly shows there was no contact at all, Argentina in 1990 had a winning mentality over other teams.

germany looks strong but remember they also won on penalty in semi against england after goalless game. even without caniggia burruchaga and other key players, germany actually needed a doubtfull penalty to win it.

With Joao Havelange fixing the game (because Argentina eliminated those viado brazilians) with that scumbag mexican ref, even with Caniggia they wouldve lost .. If the game werent fixed it wouldve gone to penalties then given Argentina's experience O.K.

That penalty and Eduardo Codesal (the ref) in 1990 final were a disgrace to World Cup. Not that Germans didn't deserve to win, but not that way. It smelled dirty as hell.

@detonator2112 The penalty in the final is not the clearest one you will see but Völler went down and the referee saw it as a foul. There were some much worse referee decisions in that World Cup. (Not giving USSR a penalty for Maradona's deliberate goal saving handball)

@MYacono When the referee in the game USSR-Argentina slept over Maradona` s handball then Havelange and FIFA were OK....The handball in 1986 or the cash-and-carry 6:0 against Peru in 1978 - then Havelange and FIFA were OK, too. And because "all are against Argentina" that is why the Argentinians were allowed to kick off the host Italy from the 1990 final.

I don`t say that Havelange or FIFA are not rotten. But don`t sell me their dirt as an explanation for Argentina`s loss i 1990 final.
