Maradona's was João Havelange's nightmare. He made the world cup history stinky by rigging the final match. It was a shame to the football world. Even the Germans were let down with that. They deserved to win but not with cheating help. History will always underline that world cup finals with a question mark. I bet João Havelange still wishes he could have prevented Maradona from being the greatest player of all time.
Love the commentator's introduction of Maradona.............."What a moment this is now here in Naples the home ground of Diego Maradona. Donadoni's misery could be compounded now because Maradona who missed from the spot a few days ago has the penalty that could notch Argentina ahead and he scored, Argentina are in front by 4 penalties to three."
No matter what you would throw at them Argentina would always reply even if they weren't playing great. They were winning games without putting a lot of effort. Goycochea for me was the hero and Maradona was an inspiration.
Germany knew that if they went to penalties they would have lost to Argentina they were trying desperately to score during the game attacking Argentina pressuring them and still couldn't put the ball at the back of the net. The penalty decision in that final was a disgrace. The replay clearly shows there was no contact at all, Argentina in 1990 had a winning mentality over other teams.
@Edifice06: I read from somewhere that Toto didn't want to take a PK. He said that "he felt tired" or something along with those lines. I'm sure he would have been on the coaches list.
compare this to current Argentina team.Argentina has kept on slumping down all the time.Lot of good players and no results :-( I think Argentina should bring on a german coach.
Thanks Goyco !!!! They thougt they `ve already won. They didn`t expect this. So Joao needed to fix the final game. I 've heard that for World Cups played in Europe only an european team can win. Is it true?
I remember the Italians being so cocky and arrogant that they were going to win that World Cup in 1990. It just shows you that cockiness comes before a fall.
maradona missed his penalty against yugoslavia but certainly it did not effected his mentality on the next game, his penalty was simply smooth
germany looks strong but remember they also won on penalty in semi against england after goalless game. even without caniggia burruchaga and other key players, germany actually needed a doubtfull penalty to win it.
A fit maradona plus caniggia would win this world cup easily
@Megadeth72 Germany won that World Cup by cheating. The diving was unbelievable. The main culprit, Jurgen Klinsmann should have been ashamed of himself. He used to go down quicker than a $5 whore desparate for a crack fix.
With Joao Havelange fixing the game (because Argentina eliminated those viado brazilians) with that scumbag mexican ref, even with Caniggia they wouldve lost .. If the game werent fixed it wouldve gone to penalties then given Argentina's experience O.K.
That penalty and Eduardo Codesal (the ref) in 1990 final were a disgrace to World Cup. Not that Germans didn't deserve to win, but not that way. It smelled dirty as hell.
@detonator2112 The penalty in the final is not the clearest one you will see but Völler went down and the referee saw it as a foul. There were some much worse referee decisions in that World Cup. (Not giving USSR a penalty for Maradona's deliberate goal saving handball)
@MYacono: This was recently deleted from Wikipedia
"On October 1999, Jorge Humberto Rojano, former president of the Mexican Referees Association, alleged in an interview with Mexican newspaper La Jornada that FIFA, at that time managed by Brazilian João Havelange, would only allow Codesal to supervise the final match if he prevented Argentina from winning".
@detonator2112 the entire world knows that.... Germany had a tremendous team that year... they played amazingly great during the entire tournament, it`s a damn shame that such a great World Cup final between two teams with such a great rivalry and history in football had to be disgraced by such a disgusting move by Havelange...
@MYacono When the referee in the game USSR-Argentina slept over Maradona` s handball then Havelange and FIFA were OK....The handball in 1986 or the cash-and-carry 6:0 against Peru in 1978 - then Havelange and FIFA were OK, too. And because "all are against Argentina" that is why the Argentinians were allowed to kick off the host Italy from the 1990 final.
I don`t say that Havelange or FIFA are not rotten. But don`t sell me their dirt as an explanation for Argentina`s loss i 1990 final.
1 thing is the refs, the other is from the top. Havelange was brazilian and was so angry after Argentina eliminated Brazil in 1990 In 1999, Jorge Humberto Rojano, ex-pres of the Mexican Referees Association, said in an interview with La Jornada that FIFA, at that time managed by Brazilian João Havelange, would only allow Codesal to supervise the final match if he prevented Argentina from winning".
@MYacono yeah.when they got past USSR with maradonas hand, past Yugoslavia playing with ten men for 100 minutes, cameroon finishing with 9 in the first game nothing was wrong.when they beat england in QF with maradonas hand and when they fixed the game with peru in 1978 nothing was wrong.when they lost to a better team suddenly conspiracy
So many Italians complain this match was played at Naples, that locals were to support Argentina because of Maradona... Bullshit! It was predicted from the start that Italy would play a semifinal there if they finished first on the preliminary round. And Napolitans were clearly on their homeland side against their ultimate idol. But that's typical Latin: blame others before accounting your own mistakes: Zenga's fumble on Caniggia's goal, possession surrender after going ahead 1-0... and so on.
Le match était une merveille, hélas pourri à la fin par l'arbitrage totalement anti-argentin. La victoire de l'Argentine est tout à fait méritée! Bravo!

He probably would have had a better chance scoring instead of Donadoni and Serena.
What was the Italian coach thinking?
