Line of David is the speed of the speed in the Derby. Period. Rule is starting to slip into my thinking as having a very legitimate chance of getting a big slice of the Derby pie . . .
Unless I miss my guess, I look for Rule and Sidney's Candy to be the early speed in the 2010 Kentucky Derby. Eskendereya probably sitting not too far off of the leaders, so he'll be in striking distance, and Lookin At Lucky not far off of him. Now how the stretch drive actually play's out is anyone's guess. I think it depends a bunch on the early fractions. If it's slow, the front end may hold up. If they're quick, the stalkers or deep closers may snatch the roses. IMO.
Another example of when handicapping Gulfstream ,always throw out the race where a horse started outside of post 8 going 1 1/8. Occasionally one will win from out there but more then not it is to much to overcome. Ice Box started in post 10 in his last race. I had him on my 50 cent P-4 ticket but to my regret left him off my P-5 ticket..I had the first 4..This game can kill ya
For 95% of this race, Rule was "much the best in the race." He even was very strong through the stretch, and wasn't caught until deep stretch with the wire looming. IMO, if Johnny Velázquez had not allowed Rule to get into a bit of an early speed duel with Pulsion, and had taken him back just enough to put him second, stalking Pulsion, he would have had enough to hold off Ice Box at the wire. He's still on my "Top 5" Derby Contenders list. As I said, for 95% of this race, he was much the best.
perfect pace set up for a come from the clouds closer. This horse will be a threat derby day as the pace wil surely be hot early with many of the major contenders to date liking to run on or near the lead. Very impressed by the effort og the 2nd place horse and Rule ran a nice race being in that hot pace all the way.
ghostzapper2006, I think you may be spot on about the 2010 Ky. Derby. There's certainly going to be a ton of "front end" speed in the race. It certainly could set up well for a strong closer. But it's so hard to predict, being that it's the first time that all of them are actually going a 1-1/4. JMO.
I don't trust come from behind horse because they can get caught in traffic. The only come from behind horse you can count on is Zenyatta
