I was never the best football player, but whenever I was on special teams, I knew where everyone was and never got hit like that. If you stop yourself from getting distracted that stuff doesn't happen. However, this hit was still unnecessary, and I am glad he got suspended for a game.
I think that they were correct in suspending Martins. Yes, it's Football, but there are many ways to inflict injuries and tackles on your opposition without having to target their heads. He could have given him a rib shot, but I think that was a cheap shot. The player was obviously following the flow of the game and this Martin blindsides him. That's cheap and uncalled for and great players make great plays. They don't look for cheap shots and then gloat over the their fallen victims.

Yes, football is a physical sport but once your intent turns to knowingly trying to injure another player, that is where you receive the penalty. Tough call for the back judge and I do not think I would have flagged the hit either at game speed. After seeing it on the replay, it should have been called. These types of hits have been a point of emphasis the last couple of years.

The reason they wear helmets in the first place is to keep the players alive when incidental contact to the head is imminent. This is football, not prissyball. Let them play.

Helmet to helmet hits have been outlawed just recently since the promoters of whatever level said so.Football is a violent game,I agree we should not teach the youth to lead with the helmets,but these adults or young men kno what they have signed up for.I played football for 12 years of my life and you can bet your ass everytime I came at someone I came with bad intentions and same with everyone else I played with.That is a clean hit,the other player was not defenseles,keep your head on a swivel

Some "fans" continue to misunderstand that tho intense physical contact is a part of football there is a difference between legal & illegal contact. The object of the physicality to block or tackle an opponent, not maim them. Not all contact is legal. Holding or blocking in the back, for instance. Leaving ur feet to spear someone & give them a concussion or permanent brain damage actually ISN'T football.

@1tZaDAm (1) This is NCAA, not the NFL. (2) Going without helmets will turn it into a pussy sport. (3) The new rules turn football into a real sport which takes real skill. Defenders can't just catapult into the ballcarrier anymore (unless they want to risk a penalty). They have to actually TACKLE the guy. If you want to see people beating the shit out of each other, watch MMA or boxing.

When you put a 210lb kid in a "90" jersey...you coaches are at fault. "90+" are reserved for defensive linemen. At game speed it's no doubt E. Martin was looking to make a block on someone. "90" just happened to be there. It's not fault of his own that he matched up on this poor kid. You give up at least 30lbs, well you see the result.
