Tracing is just as you said, placing paper over it to follow the lines.

But you can do it on a computer as well, by overlaying them... I just don't do that.

Something broke in my heart, while watching this. Really. A myth just went down, and now i don't trust nobody at all ;_;

Naah...Seriously : i got comic-making lessons in the past, and the teacher told me that even PROS "trace" in the way you do, for example they make quick sketches of people, then use these sketches for their comics' drawings. A 1:1 copy is "tracing" to me, but what you're making is kinda more "referencing", which is what i should have to do more often to increase quality :)

All I've been doing for reference is mimicking motions.... and I've been practicing on memes because they're made specifically to be mimicked.

I've always heard that about how professionals rotoscope... it's a growing exercise.

Anyway, I don't trace, but I do reference from time to time. Mostly for animations, though. That's how we grow, right? :3

People reference anime pictures to get a better idea of anatomy and movement, all artists look at things to help them improve, just like artists look at things in real life to help them...I mean, no-one can just become amazing at art without studying the areas they need to improve on .____. To learn anatomy, you do have to look at other examples first...

Not really. xD People reference for help developing their style too, they draw anime, therefore referencing anime is gonna help a great deal xD For instance, I reference anime more for help with expressions and some of the quirks anime has that are different to human anatomy, so looking at real life people and objects can only get you so far in this drawing style. x3 If you draw anime, it only makes sense to reference anime.

I don't actually trace a single line, but I always doll the hair over the original image, rather then the doll - helps me make sure it isn't totally flat against the skull.
