okay, maybe if he's running at you from 50 feet away, but what if he's closer? will you have time to use your tornado kick or spinning hook kick?

Most likely, if someone is trying to kill you, you will be unable to stay calm and fearless, unless you have experienced that multiple times in your life (which, thankfully, most of us haven't) and you will loose most fine motor skills.

You may be able to make a head kick work after years of practice, but why not just practice a groin kick?

Yes, head kicks work great in tournaments. The problem is that the opponent is just standing there bouncing, or trying to throw his own techniques. He's not running straight at you with a screwdriver, intent on ending your life. You don't have time to carefully calculate your movements in reality. It has to be an instant reaction.

Yes, I think some people may very well be able to kick someone in the head in real combat. That doesn't make it tactically smart.

Martial arts are not useless, but they way they are taught to people, they can be useless. Martial arts are useless if you don't have a combative mindset.

My uncle is from korea, and is a TKD practitioner. He explained to me that in reality, kicking to the head is stupid, but kicking the the knee or lower body is smart. When I asked him if he could teach me a tornado kick, he said "oh...that's a useless kick." He also told me not to snap my kicks, but drive them through the target.

reaction is the what martial arts are all about. You just need to train the RIGHT reaction. If you're not even training for violent situations, you will have NO reaction in violent situations, period. You may react well in the sparring ring, but when you hear someone break into your house late at night, you will not react properly. By your logic, a basketball player would be just as if not more prepared for combat than a martial artist.

Yes, most of these are with weapons. That's the reality, people use whatever means necessary, so you shouldn't pretend that isn't true when you train. What's worse though is all these people teaching knife 'disarms' and gun 'disarms,' people who have never fired a gun or used a knife in combat.

How can you go through your life knowing that you would be useless in protecting yourself, your family, or friends, even after countless hours spent learning unrealistic techniques?

I doubt most of the several hundred thousand people who get murdered every year go around looking for violence. The reason martial arts exist is because you can't always avoid violence.

This "martial arts" training will not help you at all in a real violent situation, just like playing hockey or football or mma or any other sport will not help you. reaction and timing are useless when you're heart rate is going 180 bpm because you know someone is trying to kill you. (cont.)

Also, you will only be able to use techniques in combative situations if they are 100% instinct. You CANNOT 'think' about what you're going to do. Obviously there's nothing wrong with doing a 540 kick. But if you're mixing that with your martial arts training, then it is a problem. What makes you think your body will automatically only use realistic techniques if you are attacked?

The problem is, the way you prepare for violence isn't by just learning techniques. Techniques are utterly useless unless you have the right mindset. Why do you think the people who are most successful at violence have NO TRAINING AT ALL? How many of the people in prison for life who have killed police officers, soldiers, security guards, have had any kind of training?

You don't get it, do you? A martial arts is a method of using violence as a survival tool. Bayonet fighting is a martial art, knife fighting is a martial art, the use of a firearm is a MARTIAL art. And when people take martial arts, dumb them down, corrupt the, and tell people they really work just to get money, it PISSES ME OFF. They're filling people with false confidence and putting their lives in danger just for MONEY. I don't know why, but that kind of bothers me.

This is not a 720 kick. It is a 900. You can tell by seeing how at the start of the video, his body faces the camera (0 degrees). Then he steps forward (180), puts down his right foot and picks up his left (360), spins once (720), and finally hook kicks and returns to stance (900). People who think this is a 720 kick probably also think that the wealthy are favored by a flat tax.
