djxve22... thankfully we live in more enlightened times now and we can simply enjoy the music for what it is... "brilliant"... On the racist score, lets hope we never allow things to slip back to the bad old days. For what its worth, I'm a 50 year old male, who some might refer to as being white, but I prefer to be known by my name. However, back to the music... I love Cab, he was so cool...
@risingrisingrising This isn't Disney, it's Fleischer brothers.. Disney's big competitor at the time.
It's my belief that the Hays Code pretty much ruined the Fleischers' style in the '30s and gave Disney the edge. Had it been different, perhaps western animation would not now be considered as something for children to watch (the same way anime isn't necessarily for children in Japan),
Lost words about the getting high in a day when things were very different - Betty Boop not withstanding, this is one of the most entertaining few minutes anywhere! Beyond Great!
This version is basically the lyrics to Minnie the Moocher put to the tune of St. James Infirmary Blues....listen to Cabs version in the Betty Boop cartoon. All of the other versions he does dont sound as close as this one. Im not saying this in a bad way, just stating an observation =]
Moral of the story. If you run away from home, Cab Calloway will show up as a walrus ghost and his other spooky friends will sing a song about prostitution and drugs!
A cartoon that included blacks AND drug references ("...he was 'cokie'" "...kick the gong around"). How did 1930s society ever allow it? There may never be other mega-cool, animated shorts quite like Betty Boop!!
its a shame that such great musicians had to play backstage because there were black....some times i wonder what the world wold be like if racism was not promenent thnx for the vid im a 15 years old black female who just wants to say that ...i want to bring back the motown rather then this washed up shit people call music
@djxeve22 Music has died in Recent times, kind of Around the 70's it died,we need to bring back all this great music, and morality whether we are black or white.
@djxeve22 They introduce the whole band at the beginning of the song - and the rest is a cartoon, the main feature. I don't think in this instance they're hiding anything, to be fair.
This does not seem to be a cartoon meant for children. Some far-out psychedelic imagery, and the song is about drug use. Minnie loved a guy named Smokey "though he was cokey", and he took her to Chinatown to show her "how to kick the gong around" (how to smoke opium.)
@unionguy36 - This was from the early 1930s, before the Hays Code starting censoring stuff like this. if you want to get TREMENDOUSLY disappoiinted, watch a Betty Boop cartoon from the mid to later 30s. Oy!
Up until this moment, every time I listened to the song and heard the lyrics "Diamond car with the platinum wheels" I always thought, "Wow, platinum wheels? That's just ludicrous." All the while never thinking twice about them being on a DIAMOND car.
Damn, wish I had lived back then, Id mess with a bloke named Smokey too, kicked the gong around.. These cartoons that everyone calls "creepy" nowaday, are not creepy to me...
Interesting -- this song is about a woman who hooks up with a dope fiend (he was a coker -- cocaine, and showed her how to kick the gong around (heroin/opium). Definitely not stuff for kids -- interesting look at 1930's culture.
Yo! That dance the Hi Dee Ho Man does at the begining of this jam is called the Cake Walk. Somebody, please, bring that shit back! not you chris brown. somebody else . . .

@ProjectErik It is. The cartoon was directed by Dave Fleischer and produced by Max, his brother, who both pioneered and created the Rotoscoping technique back in 1915, so yeah this is a earlier version of Rotoscoping in a way.
I first saw this cartoon on tv when I was 5 or 6 and have loved all of this kind of music ever since. It fostered a true passion for music that I try to engender in my daughter.
Thanks so much! Haven't seen this since the all-night movies at the Elgin Theater in NYC in the mid-1970's. What a perfect blend of animation and music. And the rotoscoping of Cab Calloway to be a ghost is awesome.
@anglerfly because he could sing that high, because the key of the song is higher, because a bandleader can do w/e the hell he wants to, seeing he composes & creates his own arrangements.
When Cab Calloway and Max Fleischer collaborated, there was so much awesome concentrated in that one building that it shifted the Earth's axis by seven inches.

The intro is like the precursor to the Blue Brothers starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi a bit. Though Cab Colloway did it first.....I always imagine that walk those two did when they are sneaking by the cops. Great scene, though.
