  • This is the cave where the witch took frozen betty Boop and Koko sing and dance :P

  • Ladies and Gentlemen.....WELCOME TO THE MINDFUCK

  • I love this stuff, but really.. was this stuff meant for children??

  • @mcgrawcm1 No, much of the stuff Max Fleischer made was aimed toward adult audiences.

  • got to be tripping balls to make a dance like that. still great video

  • Sam Zurick - Bass

  • Anyone else remember Mikey from Look Who's Talking watching this? I've been looking for it for ages!!

  • @CherylSoldier15 YES!!!! i want lookin for it bcos of that just the weird part of youtube following me again, but i memba it :D i was all colon capital O, i remember thinkin the song was kool

  • I got this cartoon on my phone mainy for the music

  • That boy Cab moves were smooth

  • Give slenderman his 20 dollars already

  • It's so much fun to read post from internet skinheads. So tough & outspoken online; such punk ass pussies in the physical form.

  • I never though a walrus phantom could be sucha great dancer and singer. it's a shame he only plays in a cave

  • 4:26 freak the shit outta me

  • what the shit

  • Comment removed

  • who else recognizes this from "look who's talking too"?

  • man, there is some twisted stuff in these toons! lol

  • all these betty boop bits seem to have alot of ghosts and jazz... I kinda like it...

  • I love the drug references in this old cartoon! Yay for pre-Hays Code days.

  • The song kicks ass. I want a 78rpm of this

  • These drawings are to sick I use them in my graffiti(:

  • djxve22... thankfully we live in more enlightened times now and we can simply enjoy the music for what it is... "brilliant"... On the racist score, lets hope we never allow things to slip back to the bad old days. For what its worth, I'm a 50 year old male, who some might refer to as being white, but I prefer to be known by my name. However, back to the music... I love Cab, he was so cool...

  • This is really well done.

  • Clicking on the things Tom favorites gives me nightmares.

  • Like if you think blue hair is awesome.

  • I like how disney had people that they filmed and then drew off that,

If you watch the singer you can see.

  • @risingrisingrising This isn't Disney, it's Fleischer brothers.. Disney's big competitor at the time.

It's my belief that the Hays Code pretty much ruined the Fleischers' style in the '30s and gave Disney the edge. Had it been different, perhaps western animation would not now be considered as something for children to watch (the same way anime isn't necessarily for children in Japan),

  • @risingrisingrising

THIS IS NOT DISNEY!!!!! PAY ATTENTION.

  • BOO!

  • 0:25 priceless!

  • @yestragitaarbouw totally agree

  • Cab Calloway...fly as fuck!!!

  • i just love the music

  • Lost words about the getting high in a day when things were very different - Betty Boop not withstanding, this is one of the most entertaining few minutes anywhere! Beyond Great!

  • Okay, not a lot of people today realize this, but Minnie the Moocher has probably THE greatest "Hook" in songwriting history!!!

  • Cab calloway is awesome!

  • this is a great cartoon...the animation effects were WAY ahead of the time

  • Classic.

  • Is this the same chord progression as St. James Infirmary blues?

  • @klep666 Not exactly, but it's similar!

  • All conductors should conduct like this.

  • Nice to see him in Blues Brothers

  • Betty Boop is smokin...damn!

  • Look who's talking two brought me here.

  • @69in89

    Yep! Right at 2:36

  • I love cab calloway he is awesome! I think everyone loved him because of his great songs he did.

  • i like this song

  • This version is basically the lyrics to Minnie the Moocher put to the tune of St. James Infirmary Blues....listen to Cabs version in the Betty Boop cartoon. All of the other versions he does dont sound as close as this one. Im not saying this in a bad way, just stating an observation =]

  • @musicfreak214 i was thinking the same thing but i thought i was crazy, haha

  • What's funny is the drug references went over Max Fleischer's head, but not the animators.

  • Man, I cannot get this song out of my head, let alone this cartoon!

  • @TheoMarkAllen it's a form of jazz

  • Cool.

  • how would i describe or generalize this music? old popfolk music?

  • too fucked up for this

  • No "Major Like" button? Damn!

  • were those seriously ghosts or was I tripping?

  • No WAY you could get this on kid's TV these days without some serious censorship. Seems it was meant for adult audiences.

  • Mikey from Look Who's Talking, Too was watching 2:52 - 2:30 on tv

  • man... i'm tired of the "nigger this, nigger that" bullshit. black jazz musicians got more soul than any white person who ever touched an instrument

  • THAT is the pimpest walk... if ever I did see one...

  • Moral of the story. If you run away from home, Cab Calloway will show up as a walrus ghost and his other spooky friends will sing a song about prostitution and drugs!

  • I Loved watching this when I was little!

  • I remember several years ago they played this in between innings at a Yankee game. I was like "why are they playing this at a baseball game?" lmfao.

  • Finally Blacks can play front stage, but they offer that crappy rap music instead of this gold. Life is really unfair.

  • Cab Calloway, Betty Boop, Popeye, cartoons like this and "Snow-White" and "Betty Boop MD" - God Bless Max Fleischer!

  • A cartoon that included blacks AND drug references ("...he was 'cokie'" "...kick the gong around"). How did 1930s society ever allow it? There may never be other mega-cool, animated shorts quite like Betty Boop!!

  • What the face did I just watch....WHATEVER I LOVED IT!

  • WAIT A MINUTE!!!! THIS LOOKS FAMILIAR!!!! IN "LOOK WHO'S TALKING TOO" WASN'T MIKEY WATCHING THIS ON TV!!!!!!!

  • @MayDayJonas thats the first time i saw it, and i shit my pants when i realized that the cartoon was the same

  • its a shame that such great musicians had to play backstage because there were black....some times i wonder what the world wold be like if racism was not promenent thnx for the vid im a 15 years old black female who just wants to say that ...i want to bring back the motown rather then this washed up shit people call music

  • @djxeve22 What are you calling washed up shit? This or music today? I can't tell. lol

  • @djxeve22 Music has died in Recent times, kind of Around the 70's it died,we need to bring back all this great music, and morality whether we are black or white.

  • @DeutscheRossiya

reply im not directing it towards black people

    im just saying.

  • @djxeve22 You do know that Cab , the singer of the song was black right?

  • @djxeve22 the niggers made the music, the whites made it into an industry, and then the african americans fucked up the music industry

  • @djxeve22 They introduce the whole band at the beginning of the song - and the rest is a cartoon, the main feature. I don't think in this instance they're hiding anything, to be fair.

  • @djxeve22 It's getting better :) hard times just inspire greater music

  • @djxeve22 This isn't washed up shit at all. This is a fucking classic.

  • @djxeve22 You do realize that Cab Calloway was black too, right? And he's fucking fantastic, like his band.

  • what it do

  • This does not seem to be a cartoon meant for children. Some far-out psychedelic imagery, and the song is about drug use. Minnie loved a guy named Smokey "though he was cokey", and he took her to Chinatown to show her "how to kick the gong around" (how to smoke opium.)

Very cutting-edge stuff from the 1930s.

  • @unionguy36 - This was from the early 1930s, before the Hays Code starting censoring stuff like this. if you want to get TREMENDOUSLY disappoiinted, watch a Betty Boop cartoon from the mid to later 30s. Oy!

  • I just the song and anything that uses it. Just as ageless classic

  • i prefer this version :D : watch?v=w2eDqFqImFU&feature=related

  • Yea, groove dem' funky walrus beats!

  • Up until this moment, every time I listened to the song and heard the lyrics "Diamond car with the platinum wheels" I always thought, "Wow, platinum wheels? That's just ludicrous." All the while never thinking twice about them being on a DIAMOND car.

  • The first few times I watched this, I never noticed the demon faces behind the walrus. This is the creepiest cartoon I've ever seen.

  • Damn, wish I had lived back then, Id mess with a bloke named Smokey too, kicked the gong around.. These cartoons that everyone calls "creepy" nowaday, are not creepy to me...

  • She messed with a bloke named Smokey. She loveded him but he was cokey. He took her down to Chinatown. He showed her how to kick the gong around.

Cab was the master of the lyricism.

  • what i don't get is how is the spinning moon in the end supposed to be scary?

  • BTW anybody see what is at the background at the "Cab Calloway" warlus ghost scene?

Or just i see this stuffs?

  • They out to send Cabs intro into space as an intro to aliens showing what humans are...

  • LOVE THIS SONG. can anyone tell me if Cab Calloway worked with alot of cartoonist or just Betty Boop

  • this was on look who's talking for about 5 seconds

  • for anyone to think that cartoons like this shown in the theaters back in the day were for children is crazy.

  • the annoying part is that they still have the part where they talk in the middle about not being afraid bc i wanted to make this into an mp3. :(

  • great cartoon! it's like a nightmare!

  • Comment removed

  • They should bring back cartoons at intermission instead of them boring movie trailers and advertisments.

  • @PREZ150 - AMEN TO THAT!! - Especially cartoons like this one.

  • What's funny is that this animation is better than some cartoons made nowadays

  • this cartoon used to scare the crap out of me...ok it still might

    thanks for posting

  • yea agreed this episode is effin weird. at least one part will creep everyone out

  • this whole cartoon is somekind of disturbing, creepy and surreal.

don´t know if i like it or not.

but the song is an alltime classic....

  • Cab Calloway: The original michael jackson

  • Check footwork -- Michael Jackson stole for moonwalk....

  • @ClueSign cab calloway = genius

    michael jackson = kiddy fiddler

  • lmaooo , it looks like the warlus is wearing tights tht wouldnt come up anymore.

  • Interesting -- this song is about a woman who hooks up with a dope fiend (he was a coker -- cocaine, and showed her how to kick the gong around (heroin/opium). Definitely not stuff for kids -- interesting look at 1930's culture.

  • @dwacon This cartoons (betty boop)wasnt met for children, they were adult cartoons but later changed them because of the threats to shut it down.

  • I think they're trying to imply that if Betty leaves home, she'll become a whore, like Minnie.

  • @MarijuanaFireFighter too late. XD

  • That is some fiiiine ass dancing at 0:20.

  • the Song in the Beginning was St. James Infirmary, then Minnie the Moocher.

  • @MrMariodave - the song at the beginning is "Prohibition Blues" with his band called the Missourians.

  • This version is great and everything but does anyone else think the way Cab Calloway sings it sound extremely fucking creepy?

  • @AbuGrape45 that;s the point. it is a warning to ppl who "kick the gong around" smokin' in the chinks opium dens.

  • I love this song, and this version. Anyone know where to download it?

  • that's not Cab singing, right? Who is it?

  • @gorillazfan3 yes it is Cabell "Cab" singing that's him dancing at the beginning too.

  • @JRussoBuffaloNY really? he sounds different

  • @gorillazfan3 he was 25 when it was recorded, generally they sing the best then. u know how it is

  • Cabel's dancing in the beginingis priceless that is my fav part.

  • Yo! That dance the Hi Dee Ho Man does at the begining of this jam is called the Cake Walk. Somebody, please, bring that shit back! not you chris brown. somebody else . . .

  • The 30's and 40's was when music was music! It was the best with guys like Calloway, Miller, Ellington, Sinatra... Not this shit now where musical talent is based on how many swears you can rhyme together.

  • im wondering if this is an early version of rotoscoping

  • @ProjectErik It is. The cartoon was directed by Dave Fleischer and produced by Max, his brother, who both pioneered and created the Rotoscoping technique back in 1915, so yeah this is a earlier version of Rotoscoping in a way.

  • This is one of the best cartoons ever.

  • hey folks, this is music! ;D

  • I do love the version of "Tiger Rag" at the end. ODJB 1917

  • Isn't this from Betty Boop?

  • Oh it is! LOL xD

  • You guys should really try this video out with the textp april fools joke! It replaces the pixels with colored letters.

Just copy past &textp=fool at the end of the url

  • I first saw this cartoon on tv when I was 5 or 6 and have loved all of this kind of music ever since. It fostered a true passion for music that I try to engender in my daughter.

  • Thanks so much! Haven't seen this since the all-night movies at the Elgin Theater in NYC in the mid-1970's. What a perfect blend of animation and music. And the rotoscoping of Cab Calloway to be a ghost is awesome.

  • Who is minnie? betty boop or the one in front of her

  • What? The one with betty boop is bimbo :)

  • I mean why are they singing minnie the moocher?

  • I dont know. Dont you like the song?

  • @kickar I love the song. Why does cab calloway's voice so high?

  • Haha! Im neither Cab Calloway or Max Fleischer.. I'm sorry but I cant answer your questions and I dont think that anyone on youtube can either! Hehe.

  • @anglerfly because he could sing that high, because the key of the song is higher, because a bandleader can do w/e the hell he wants to, seeing he composes & creates his own arrangements.

  • Back then cartoons were used to advertise songs.

  • When Cab Calloway and Max Fleischer collaborated, there was so much awesome concentrated in that one building that it shifted the Earth's axis by seven inches.

  • God that huge ghost at the end freaks the crap out of me.

  • THIS is a cool toon. the song fits perfectly

  • this is the SHIT.....

  • This is scary!

  • the fleishers brother were genius, and talented artist, Disney was just a sucessfull bussinesman

  • Especially in the 20's. Today, we just click a mouse.

  • What's with the surplus tail? If he's using the walrus tails as feet, what is that other thing? It's creeping me out.

  • Out of that whole cartoon, THAT's the only bit that creeps you out? :P

  • @boffyb out of the entire cartoon that is the only thing of importance to that twit, he got his answer it is genitalia ha ha ha pee pee ha ha. I pity the kid he is only 20 years old after all. he thought he was clever by indirectly pointing out every detail till someone finally told him it was a dick. lol

  • @boffyb certainly, i would think that the use of negroes in such close proximity to miss boop would eclipse any use of walrus tail as far as the creep factor is concerned

  • @ShelfLifeInc

    Probably another tail...

  • @ShelfLifeInc ur dick

  • @JRussoBuffaloNY I would ask you to justify your comment, but it would be a waste of my time and yours. I don't even understand why you've wasted your time posting on my profile. So unless you have something practical to say in response to my comment, just watch and enjoy the video.

  • @ShelfLifeInc not only was it practical as you say but it was valid, understand it and enjoy. danke

  • @ShelfLifeInc out of the entire cartoon that is the only thing of importance to that twit, he got his answer it is genitalia ha ha ha pee pee ha ha. I pity the kid he is only 20 years old after all. he thought he was clever by indirectly pointing out every detail till someone finally told him it was a dick. lol justification

  • @JRussoBuffaloNY A dick? Really? Why didn't I think of that? Maybe because dicks generally don't dangle from the ass. I only made a comment on whatever-it-is because no one else had - there's no point in me saying how much I enjoy this because everyone else already knows how awesome the video is. I wasn't being clever or witty, just saying what came to mind.

And don't pity "the kid" - I pity you being almost a decade older than me and still having no concept of grammar. Twit.

  • @ShelfLifeInc I don't think the character is meant to be an anatomically accurate walrus. I mean, look at the size of Betty Boop's head -- and where's her chin?

  • @ShelfLifeInc You find that disturbing? What baout your lack of faith?!

  • @ShelfLifeInc actually, he's dancing on the fins which are basically the feet. Walruses do have a tail between their "feet"

  • It must have taken lots of hard work for animation to get the ghost character to dance like Cab.

  • It's really not that hard because they rotoscoped it. In other words, it's traced animation from live action.

  • i feel like the squirrel nut zippers are probably doing a tribute to this in their "ghost of stephen foster" video.

they have one of their guys dancing similarly in front of the rest of the band before the cartoon portion of the video.

  • I love everyone always uses this song and don't even know it's about a chick basically on cocaine.

  • @TB4000 Opium. ^_^

  • @TB4000 I know man, people don't realize how real jazz , or even just older music from that era, is in that regard. It's sad that young people don't take the time to notice to it. Too much shitty music these days.

  • @Timebomb25ca I know it sad I am 25 years old & love Jazz & Blues,

  • @TB4000 Cocaine or opium?

  • @pepusy She smoked opium. Her boyfriend was a cokehead. "She messed around with a bloke named Smokey

She loved him though he was cokey

He took her down to Chinatown

And he showed her how to kick the gong around."

  • @scotpens ten points

  • The intro is like the precursor to the Blue Brothers starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi a bit. Though Cab Colloway did it first.....I always imagine that walk those two did when they are sneaking by the cops. Great scene, though.

  • Great combo Calloway and Fleisher animation

    !!!!!!!!!

    good stuff.

  • Cab calloway is the shit...

He was so freaking awesome and always happy...

Tho he's smile looks a bit sad... ._.

  • what footwork!
