Randy was talking about this album on Vinyl Tap this week. All the guitars were plugged into one amp and they were using just one mike for the whole band.
. . . little known fact . . . just as Chad Allen and the Expressions ... when they came
out with "Skakin' All Over" . . . could not get Air Time in Winnipeg (sadly, the Radio Stations Didn't Think They Were Worthy!!!) THAT IS WHY THEIR NEXT RELEASE
was just Entitled as "The Guess Who!!!" . . . Not Knowing ... the Stations played
their Songs and kept gettin' requests AND, the Rest Is History!!!
JUST AS A SIDE NOTE . . , WE USED TO GO TO THEIR SHOWS in PORTAGE
@handinside You are right. At that time, it was the Scepter (the Shirelles, Dionne Warwick) label. According to an interview from GOLDMINE back in the early 1990s, The Guess Who were puzzled over having their record released on Scepter because it's roster were black artists. B.J. Thomas was added to Scepter Records AFTER "Shakin' All Over" was released. The Guess Who released another 45 on Scepter but it tanked.
This is the song that was playing during a scene from one of Mr. Bean's episodes - the one where he ended up taking care of a baby at an amusement park. :-D
try hooking the truntable to a preamp or reciver and hooking that to th computer, then record, use sound recorder and ajust the length, or use a beter program
I actually like the fact that the quality isn't perfect. I don't think it's too distracting, I think it makes it more authentic and honest in a way. I know that's weird. xD
I realize this. I own a record player and 45s. I just occasionally dislike how you can hear more of a pitch fluctuation on a 45 versus a regular LP. It's a weird preference I have. So I would prefer not to be called ridiculous simply for a personal preference.
But, I gots ta' know. I was in the RCAF in Gimli in 1965. Would I have heard this version? I swear I did, at the pavilion in the center of town in 1965.
In my opinion Chad Allan had one of the GREATEST voices in Rock-absolutely CHILLING to the bone! Johhny Kid wrote and did the original but to me THIS was the BEST version!
I did have a US version of "The Guess Who: Chad Allan and the Expressions" album, which was released on Scepter Records in 1965. I noticed that it had some songs culled from previous Canadian Guess Who albums, and had a pic of a boy and girl dancing instead of the band.
yeah, Chad Allan & The Expressions did two LP's for Quality (Shakin' All over, Hey Ho). The best tracks from the two were taken and put onto the US Scepter release. The US release is a compilation of their better songs but still, there are some gems missing from the Scepter LP.
It wasn't until 1969, I think, that the Guess Who recorded for Nimbus 9 Records in Canada and their US releases distributed by RCA Victor. In my opinion, I wish RCA had gotten the record rights for Shakin' All Over, it would have been a bigger hit, yet it was distributed by the smaller Scepter label (who had the Shirelles and Dionne Warwick on their roster).

Check "Rosetta West - Shakin' All Over" for a pretty wild version.

A rock classic that put the Guess Who on the 1965 Billboard Hot 100. Written & first recorded by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates in 1959.

Check out Randy Bachman's web site, he has all of the early Guess Who songs, pre Burton and early with Burton. And very reasonable prices too.

It really sounds like Burton Cummings doing vocals on this. Is it Cummings on this record?
dundee12 3 years ago
Are you kidding?! The great Chad Allan sounds NOTHING like Cummings, Burton was/is a fine singer but Chad's voice was CHILLING!
Babyhowdy233 3 years ago
I used to go and stand outside the clubs when they first started playing back in Winnipeg MB, Chad Allen, and Randy Bachman, cool.
