you could also get potassium nitrate by neutralising process of hydrogen nitrate(nitric acid) + potassium hydroxide. and you will get potassium nitrate and hydrogen hydroxide(H2O)

you can use sodium or potassium hydroxide too.. i just use 5 parts hydroxide (mine is potassium/sodium.. got it from boiling down toilet bowl cleaner (:. ) and then 8 parts ammonium nitrate (mine from instant cold pack..) dissolve them both in water.. i do it in 2 different bowls, 1 for hydroxide and 1 for AN.. then i mix in a bigger one and then i cook ALL the liquid away.. but i havent tried to purify it yet.. thnx.. mine doesnt like sugar.. doesnt react very well..

BTW. some fertilizers contain ammonium nitrate too, look for KAS.

Otherwise you could follow "The Jolly Roger" method.

It produces a lot less when using the original ingredients, but it works and it's a cheaper and more DIY approach towards porducing potassium nitrate.

yeahh if mixed with sugar you can make a low explosive/ smoke bombs but with other chemiclas it can become for reactive and there for explosive.. the first attack on the twin towers in the 1980's they used explosives from fertilizer with a high Kno3 content .. and now they have changed most fertilzors so they knowlong have potassium nitrate in them ..this alone cant be made into gun powder .. gun powder is charcoal, sulphur and salt peter ( Kno3/pottasium nitrate)

I´m from Germany, here it`s also hard to get NH4NO3, but i can extract it from fertilzer, wich conatins approx. 70% NH4NO3.

But it`s hard to get KNO3 here, sometimes you can find it as fertilzer (99% pure).

no separating Ammonium chloride from NaNO3 would require many recrystallizations (extra work for you) you could use NaCO3/dehydrated washing or baking soda however to form NaNO3.

no kno3 is an oxident it makes stuff burn faster. sodium nitrate is ok but it sucks the water out of its surrounding therefore it is absolutely useless, so is clacium nitrate

I did two: 2NaOH+H2SO4->Na2SO4+2H2O This reaction rocks even if [H2SO4]=30m/m%, it reached 100celsius in no time, and got out of the test tube. I did it with a mixture of Ca(OH)2 and CaCO3 and reacted it with HCl ([HCl]=20m/m%). It wasn't that bad, but the flask was so hot, I could'nt touch it with bare hands.

Maybe you can get NH4NO3 from instand cold packs oder fertilizer, making NH4NO3 from KNO3or NaNO3 is difficult, because NH4NO3 is extremly soluble, but Ca(NO3)2 would work!
