An Incredibly elegant keyword search methodolgy and it's

seductively contrarian. Many SEO pros have suggested you want to see a lot of competition because if PPC customers are in a feeding frenzy for a keyword it must be one that has already proved to be one that draws a lot of visitors to a site.

The choice of Google's AW tool over Wordtrsckeror Keyword Discovery is also inspired. If you can't trust Google, how can you put faith in Wordtracker that is using two small

metacrawlers.

I'm so grateful for everyone's comments. By the way, the Google Adword Keyword Tool has changed and the columns are in a different order. Also the search volumes are showing up as numbers now instead of boxes. Be sure to check which column you're looking at. Remember too that the advertiser competition represents buyers of Google Adwords, not organic search. Still, I have found this column to be a good indicator of even the organic search results much of the time.

Four months later I finally respond to your note. Thanks for your thoughtful comment! The SEO pros you mention may be right about the frenzy for a phrase. Personally, if the Google AW tool tells me that a lot of people are searching for a phrase and the Adwords competition is low, I like to search the term in Google and check the page rank of the first three results. If one of them ranks at 3 or less, I figure I can use blogging and optimization to compete. So far, so good!

Are your sure Advertiser Competition colunm is the amount of people using a key word. Google describes it like this: "Statistics showing the relative amount of advertisers bidding on that keyword.". From this description I was under the impression it related to the amount of people from adwords that buy that particular keyword.

You are right. I need to change that information. But think about this. If the Advertiser Competition column shows a high rating, you can bet that people are bidding on that keyword to beat a high level of competition in the organic search arena. I think it's safe to use this column as a way to estimate the organic competition for a given keyword phrase.

I still do not understand what you are claiming. If I make an article that talks about "Montana phone company DSL ratings" and there is a lot of people searching for that in Montana, but a low amount of advertizers because there is only one phone company. Why does that mean that you are going to have low competition if you write an article about that?

I'm sorry, but I just saw the comment today!! If people are searching for "Montana phone company DSL ratings," then the competition we are concerned about would be for other pages optimized for that very phrase, not for the company itself. So you would check the phrase in the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and perhaps modify it to suit the actual search phrases that have a high search volume and low advertiser competition. The advertiser Comp. column isn't a perfect indicator, but it helps.
