Oh, and bassoon is way different. I played it for a while and it has about a bazillion thumb keys. Also the double reed is so small that I used to get a headache from the pressure. LOL Bass and all the big clarinets are FAR superior. LOL
I liked playing contra because it shakes when you play the low notes. Really awesome.
There are also instruments (at least bass clarinets ... can't remember about contra) that have additional low keys all the way down to C. My university bought one when I was there. Bummer that when I left they made me leave that beautiful bass clarinet ... at the school! It was so fun to play .....
That's awesome! I play bass clarinet and I love Danny Elfman songs, I honestly haven't ever seen a contrabass or a contrabass bass but it looks like fun. :)
My friend plays the Bass Clarinet but It's not this deep cause this is, as you said, the Controbass Bass Clarinet. When I clicked on it I was like this is THE PART I WAS LOOKING FOR LOL GOOD JOB
omg love contrabass so much, i dont care if i play clarinet myself, i almost rather the low sounds of contrabass or bari sax or anything similar over flute or clarinet
This instrument at a band concert! it's way harder than you think! I can play it easy now! some five days of practice helps you alot! Thats how i learned since i was the out of all the clarinets last year. My band teacher even told me that.... that made my day:D
I Don't Ever Sound Like A Ship.. I Have A Very Smooth Sound. I Think I Only Sounded Like That Once And My Band Director Responded With "Did You Put ROCKS In Your Horn Child?!" I Don't Mean Any Disrespect, You Play Well. I Was Just Saying.
I'v played Bb soprano clarinet and Bb Bass clarinet for about two years now but I think I'm pretty good because I play in the woodmont high school marching band of pride
ive played clarinet/bass/contra bass for over 10 years now a tip how to get smooth notes and not have it sound like your saliva is bouncing through out it would be to use the air in your stomach and to open your throat like if you're yawning...a great tip i learned from a wonderful well known instructor wes humphry... i hope it helps hun
@NevinJarek I play about 3 different instruments all in the woodwind family. I play the Clarinet, the Bassoon, and the Bass Clarinet. I have played 3 years on clarinet and a year on the other two. I will soon be picking up the Contrabass Clarinet and I'm only in high school. From what I know, the Contrabass Clarinet is a mix of the three above. It has the length of a Basson, the reed and mouth piece of a Bass Clarinet, and the same fingering as the Clarinet (maybe brought down an octave or two)
mmm, If you learn to play a clarinet can you pick this up naturally? does it sound anything like bassoons? If you learn to play on of this can you pick up a bassoon naturally?
@NevinJarek nope, this one takes a massive amount of air and your embrasure needs to be much wider because the mouthpiece is way bigger. it sounds a bit like a bassoon but no completely. and you can't pick up a bassoon naturally because it's a double reed and this is a single reed, so you would have to get used to the double reed playing first
@karatekween33 oh, but what about the fingering, is it the same with clarinets as with this one? Sorry for my ignorance, I'm just familiar with stringed instruments....
@NevinJarek yes, mostly all the same. there's a low Eb on this instrument though, like there is on the regular Bb bass clarinet. to get to high notes on the contra you can also use harmonics, but yeah it's mostly the same
@NevinJarek no, you cann't play the bassoon if you play the bass/contrabass clarinet because these are different instruments, they have very different fingerings and and the mouthpiece is totally different (the clarinet is a simple reed instrument, and the bassoon is, as the oboe, a double reed instrument) If are a clarinet player, and you want to play the bass clarinet, you can do it, because they have the same fingerings (with some differences) but you will probably need an adaptation period
@NevinJarek I'm a Tenor Sax player that went and switched to bass clarinet at first to prepare, and then straight to one of these beasts. If you're accustomed to a lot of air, you can do it. Bassoon a very complicated instrument though, and has a different kind of embouchure, considering it's a double-reed instrument.
@NevinJarek what? someone that used the phrase "pick up a bassoon naturally". Oh no. no no no. I started bassoon as my 6th instrument & 2nd wind instrument at that; it is not easy to pick up. Even if you produce enough air to get a squeak out the first time, it'll sound like a duck for at least a year.
@NevinJarek Shouldn't have too much of a problem going from Bb clarinet to contra bass, I played regular clarinet from 5-12 grade & played a contra bass 11th & 12th grade for symphonic band & woodwind choir. The only difference really is use more air but hold your mouth not as tight. I absolutely LOVED playing the contra bass, I've always been able to use a lot of air so it was nice to finally play an instrument that I could go full force on.
@NevinJarek Plus you feel the notes more than you hear them. The notes aren't hard to hear, but when you play it you can feel your upper body buzzing & vibrating with the instrument. It makes you feel like you're one with the instrument, it's so awesome :)
The only problem I ever had with it was holding a relatively low note for 64 measures at about 90 bpm -_-;; that was rough.
Great, now I want to get back into band & start playing a contra bass again
oh my goodness i played the same song on bassoon and our parts suck lol. but yeah we have one but some moron middle schooler snapped it in half by standing on it and noone in tucson can fix it cuz none of the stores have ever heard of one before
dude i want to play contra bass but our school only has one and its all jacked up so none of the bass clarinets can play it and our school can afford another one:(
I've played the contrabass clarinet. I really do miss it. One question for you - What size reed do you use? I used a Vandoren 4 and it took a lot of the "tugboat" sound away. The bigger the instrument, the thicker reed you need because you're blowing more air into it.
im so jealous you can play that! i play the bass clarinet so i know i COULD play it but ive never had the opportunity you know? do you play it through your school or privately? i WISH i could play that in band class. so awesome.
@karatekween33 Hey I'm a 28 year old jazz clarinetist and the largest clarinet I have is an alto. Due to its bore diameter it requires a lot of air. Not so much tightening on the lips but a lot of air. So I assumed that this one must be very tiring for the lungs. I wasn't trying to make fun of it.. And about the jokes.. Here in Greece almost no women play clarinet because the make the "connection" and that's pretty bad because the clarinet is the top instrument in our folk tradition.
@douskara i know you weren't trying to make fun of it, but my mind automatically goes there haha. and GREECE wow that's very cool, i hope to travel there someday

hahah @marieware2 dude...that's the same song. its from the song music from a darkened theater. and @karatekween33 seriously, you can't just jump into the contrabass because it doesn't work like that. you have to play the clarinet or bass clarinet first unless you have some serious lessons. no band teacher in their right mind would let a first year play a 22,000$ instrument on their first year. juuuust saying.

@twiggmobscene i have to say dude, epic fail. i'm so proud of you for playing the contrabass clarinet better than her on a different song though. good job.
It takes a while to get used to. I did that this year, only I played the Bb Contrabass. (Forgive me karatekween33 if I am wrong, as I am under the impression that yours is an Eb). Now I play both, because a song we play required the Eb.
Good luck, and thanks for joining our throng of amazingness! =D
@lifeismystory nope, this is a BBb contra! i've tried playing the EEb at our school, and it definitely has a different feel to it. i prefer this one but they're both great haha
@karatekween33: That's sweet! I have this metal one that's curvy, so its not half as tall as yours! The Bb is more interesting, but our Bb is so much older than our Eb and the Eb is in better condition, so it plays better.
My Contrabass is Big Becky while my Bass Clarinet is Big Sally. My Bb Soprano Clarinet is Buffy And my Gemeinhardt flute is named......you guessed it. GiGi!!!
Your keys sound loose or untuned.. Not bein a flamer.. My open G does the same thing because of my F# key.. I hate it, sounds two notes flat when I play. Sounded like you were having the same trouble in your lower register?
i know what you mean! back when i played the contra, those low notes would make my whole head vibrate and most of the time i couldn't tell how loud i was playing. haha
We're playing this in wind ensemble now and I have the solos and I play contra-alto clarinet still trying to find a contra-bass nice work on the solos btw
Anyone who plays Contrabass is a god/goddess in my eyes. I play Contra alto and really want to play the Contrabass.

@freakyjay12 well... your lungs may die... but you'll get used to it soon enough haha

@lifeismystory nope, this is a BBb contra! i've tried playing the EEb at our school, and it definitely has a different feel to it. i prefer this one but they're both great haha
karatekween33 1 year ago
@karatekween33: That's sweet! I have this metal one that's curvy, so its not half as tall as yours! The Bb is more interesting, but our Bb is so much older than our Eb and the Eb is in better condition, so it plays better.

I have a contra alto clarinet that I'm borrowing from school, and it's pretty cool.

Your keys sound loose or untuned.. Not bein a flamer.. My open G does the same thing because of my F# key.. I hate it, sounds two notes flat when I play. Sounded like you were having the same trouble in your lower register?

Fun instrument. When you play lower than C everything you see vibrates like the frequency you play. You get many awkward stares haha
yoyima 2 years ago 16
i know what you mean! back when i played the contra, those low notes would make my whole head vibrate and most of the time i couldn't tell how loud i was playing. haha
karatekween33 2 years ago
Could you post the sheet music for this please? I love the songs and I have no idea where to find a copy for contra only!
