American trying to figure out this joke. Is this about Cockney being full of thieves and the song just being an assortment of other songs jammed together? If not what the fuck is the joke?
@FluffyLizards Not-a-Brit here, but here are my 2 cents/pence/öre: The joke is that all the songs are performed in the stereotypical cockney music hall knees-up fashion, which doesn't go well together with the "epic" spirit of any of the songs performed.
US analogy: Weird Al turning everything into a polka.
Here - this is from "Perception and Psychophysics" by D. Levitin:
"While very few people have the ability to name a pitch with no external reference, pitch memory can be activated by repeated exposure. People who are not skilled singers will often sing popular songs in the correct key,[64] and can usually recognize when TV themes have been shifted into the wrong key"
Look. The definition of perfect pitch fits into the definition of the proposed 'pitch memory'. Because no matter how 'skilled' or not, they have identified and recreated a musical note.
And I have plundered on only one error which has made me 'wrong', which was the misspelling of the word 'source', and it's pathetic if you keep bringing that up if I have admitted the mistake multiple times.
"It is pointless because it was a single spelling mistake that you could fully understand." Notice 'YOU', implying you are the reader and the recipient of the comment.
And I'll summarise: A pop singer that has repeated exposure that can reproduce that specific pitch and identify it has perfect pitch; the definition of perfect pitch does not exclude muscle memory.
Also, I meant blundered.
Look, it's 1am in the morning, I'm tired as hell and I need to retire. Comment again for tmrw.
@SiMoN6873 The "you" could also be used to infer "you" as a generic person, which could be applicable to a writer as much as a reader. I don't know why you referenced your own mistake though - I was over it.
Have you not yet read the quotes I supplied which have already proven your definition of "Perfect Pitch" is incorrect ? For your benefit I will re-post the quote and its source ...
"While very few people have the ability to name a pitch with no external reference, pitch memory can be activated by repeated exposure. PS. You are using "plundered" in an incorrect manner. Look it up in the dictionary. It may not be used in this context, rendering that sentence nonsensical at best.
@SiMoN6873 Tiny mistakes ?? No, I'm pointing out that your whole conception of what "perfect pitch" is has some huge flaws and shortcomings. The other mistakes you have made with words kind of puts this into some form of context. You struggle with the English language, and this is where the problem lies. I clearly "know what perfect pitch is" better than you do.
@damens I replied because like many people I'm sick of the pompous, irrelevant bickering on every single fucking Youtube page that drowns out any actual conversation about the video. @anmaree Here's another tip. @msanniemc Yes, it does ... which is why the fact you responded AGAIN and have therefore forced me to send ANOTHER message just to have the last word, proves your motivation is NOT to stop any "thread crapping" in here, but rather to contribute to it ... but enjoy reading the typically inane comments which will inform or validate your current beliefs and opinions and therefore make your life seem worthwhile and nowhere near as isolated and lonely ...
@damens@damens I know you find his voice dischordant but are you a fan of Bill Bailey as a comedian? This (Cosmic Jam) is objectively my favourite of his stand-up shows, it's got more of a raw, energetic feel to it. Although Bewilderness was the first one I saw, so I'll always have some attachment to it despite its slow start.
@anmaree Yes - I like Bill Bailey. As with most comedians however, I prefer when they are speaking (if I want to hear a Radiohead song, I want to hear Thom Yorke singing it, unless it is REALLY funny or there is some other great singer covering it). I also prefer seeing comedians when they are live and unscripted (in a chat show setting etc.). So many of them use ghost writers nowadays that this gives the clearest indication of their wit and intelligence.
@anmaree Cool - let me know what you think - there's plenty on YouTube. I personally recommend "Rock and Roll Nerd", "Bears don't dig on dancing", "Taboo" and "If I didn't have you" as a nice way to see if you want to explore further or not ...
@anmaree Which really begs the question of what non-pompous, non-irrelevant You Tube conversation you expect to see under a Youtube page ? Surely you have worked out by now (considering it happens "on every single fucking" page) that YouTube comments (possibly most of the internet) is not the repository of all that is good and knowledgable. If you still cry like a whiny bitch at each forum or post, are those willing participants the fools, or is it you, who still hangs around like a bad smell?
@msanniemc See ? It is so often the case that people say they are intending to avoid that which they really wish to happen. You are bored so you want to "chat" whilst being ashamed that the only place you can do so is on an internet forum. Find someone in the real world to talk to - you "hang up" first, and then I will too ... k ?
I'm not bored, the video's great. I'd recommend the studio version of this song if you're interested? As it's not a live recording, Bill's voice might come across as more tuneful. I was going to say more about his shows (although I don't think it was his best material I did get to see Tinselworm live) but seeing as how you know all about my social life I don't really need to tell you that. Anyway, check it out if you like. If not no worries, you're under no pressure to reply. :)
@anmaree Actually just have to clarify what I said there - I think MOST comedians (including Bill Bailey) do better with speaking than singing, but I would make an exception for those who are exceptional enough as musicians to have a purely music-based act (I'm thinking Tim Minchin and Flight of the Concordes here). Even though their voices aren't truly great, the songs are VERY funny or VERY clever - they tend not to do well at stand up comedy though, if they try at all.
@SiMoN6873 Not if you don't know what it is ... maybe you have some form of neurological condition or disease which you mistakenly believe is what other people call "perfect pitch" ? Imagine if someone had perfect pitch, yet a poor enough singing technique that they couldn't pitch as well as most singers without "perfect pitch" - wouldn't it be awful to hear how bad you are but be unable to stop it ? Would be enough to make anyone stop singing ... oh, wait ...
Haha, your snide insults won't change the wrongness of your argument. And your proposed hypothetical scenario proves exactly that you have completely confused what perfect pitch is:
Perfect pitch is the ability to pitch yourself without the aid of something, for example an instrument. A singer without perfect pitch CANNOT PITCH AT ALL without an external sauce.
And to justify my perfect pitching, I can sing out a note away from a piano, then play the note and it'll be the same.
@SiMoN6873 LOL - no wonder you don't understand, given your IQ is so low (or is it your grasp of English?). You can't even spell "source" correctly ! The definition of "Perfect Pitch" is as follows: "perfect pitch, is the ability to name OR REPRODUCE A TONE without reference to an external standard". What I am saying is that Bailey can do the former, but not the latter, with his singing. Pretty clear to me. PS. Most singers DON"T have perfect pitch, yet sing more tunefully even in acapella.
Erm, I actually did an IQ test in which I achieved 130 which isn't too low, I believe. I apologise for the mistake, it was as a result of spending too much time on a website that developed slang. But this is veering off and pointless, given your previous response that used poor punctuation and made little grammatical sense.
I like how you completely forgot about the 'OR' in your statement. Oops. Also, the fact that he isn't singing acapella in this video doesn't justify it either.
@SiMoN6873 Not pointless. Grammar curt to fit into word limits, but still correct. I challenge you to produce even one single spelling error in my previous post (let alone "errors"). What are you talking about with acapella ? I'm saying singers WITHOUT perfect pitch can sing more in tune than him WITHOUT an external music source (one of the meanings of "acapella", idiot !) even if they can't name the exact pitch. Your claim singers cannot pitch AT ALL without music is absolutely LUDICROUS !
@damens Oh god, I hoped it didn't have to lead to bullet points.
-It is pointless because it was a single spelling mistake that you could fully understand. I admit there are no errors, although ambiguous at times - the use of ellipses was offputting.
-How many acapella performances have you watched? Each time there is at least a note played on the piano or someone with perfect pitch giving a note to the others.
-If a singer can sing the correct pitch without a source, that's perfect pitch.
- There was not even a single spelling mistake in that post, which just goes to prove how uneducated you are. I challenge you to point out the spelling "error". You are clearly unable to do so, which categorically proves you have an IQ WELL below the "130" you have erroneously claimed for yourself. You have made a mistake in suggesting that I spelt a word incorrectly - time to be a man and admit it !
Another message will soon follow to counter your second point ...
I also didn't say you made a spelling error, I said that you "used poor punctuation" and "made little grammatical sense". I then pointed out that "I admit there are no errors". If that isn't admittance I am wrong, I don't know what is.
- It is not hard for a singer to sing in tune without an external source. What you said is that a "singer CANNOT PITCH AT ALL without an external source" ie. that as soon as the music pauses (or in acapella, as soon as an initial reference tone is over) suddenly the singers "cannot pitch at all", which would mean songs would be a random bunch of unpitched notes, not following any recognisable tune - they wouldn't know a high C from an F two octaves below - clearly NOT the case !!
I did not say that as soon as the *music pauses* a singer cannot pitch at all. If it be a short pause, of course he would be able to pitch, because he can base it off the notes before the pause. However, if the singer were to start singing out of the blue with no preceding musical notes and no perfect pitching, he wouldn't be able to pitch properly.
And I'm quite confused because you seem to be inferring that an external musical source only means the initial reference tone.
You still haven't pointed out what you claim to be my "spelling mistake" from that post. Nor have you conceded this. Ignoring it won't make it go away. I will just assume you searched a dictionary, found out that you were wrong and are now hoping to avoid having to admit as much.
What you SAID is that "A singer without perfect pitch CANNOT PITCH AT ALL without an external sauce". Cannot pitch AT ALL - not even slightly !!
I forgive you if you missed out my previous comment, but I'm sick of repeating myself.
"I also didn't say you made a spelling error, I said that you "used poor punctuation" and "made little grammatical sense". I then pointed out that "I admit there are no errors". If that isn't admittance I am wrong, I don't know what is."
And there is some confusion here. When I say pitch I mean being able to adjust into a desirable pitch.
@SiMoN6873 I am not inferring that an external music source only means the initial reference tone ... it was you who alluded to this (when you mistakenly believed the definition of "acapella" could only refer to a grouping of singers). An external music source can be music during the performance or an initial pitching tone or a pre-recorded track (such as a guide vocal track in studio recordings). Why limit it purely to an "initial tone" ??
@SiMoN6873 A singer who is familiar with his/her voice and with a piece of music, can sing it "around the house" IN PITCH even without an external reference, because they KNOW where the song lies (pitch-wise) in their voice. Are everybody (other than the very few with perfect pitch), ALWAYS singing off pitch without an external music source - this is what you suggest and this is where you are wrong.
I did not say the word 'misspelt'. You cannot quote something that doesn't exist. Hopefully, for the final time, I'll get this through to you. NOWHERE IN ANY OF MY COMMENTS DO I SAY YOU MISSPELT ANY WORD OR MADE ANY SPELLING ERROR.
Okay, as to your other point, if they can pitch without an external music source, they have perfect pitch. If the singer can sing a familiar text in pitch then he has perfect pitch.
"-It is pointless because it was a single spelling mistake that you could fully understand". That quote was from you referencing a single spelling mistake.
If a singer can sing a familiar text in pitch he does NOT have "perfect pitch", he has muscle memory and lots of repetition. He could not sing a song he hasn't learnt perfectly and would not be able to "name the note" from an external source whilst blind folded etc.
Here - this is from "Perception and Psychophysics" by D. Levitin:
"While very few people have the ability to name a pitch with no external reference, pitch memory can be activated by repeated exposure. People who are not skilled singers will often sing popular songs in the correct key,[64] and can usually recognize when TV themes have been shifted into the wrong key".

@damens
I thought from the tone of my writing I made it clear that I know that the source does not have to be the initial tone.

@SiMoN6873 My "misspelt" word was what ?
damens 3 months ago
@SiMoN6873 A singer who is familiar with his/her voice and with a piece of music, can sing it "around the house" IN PITCH even without an external reference, because they KNOW where the song lies (pitch-wise) in their voice. Are everybody (other than the very few with perfect pitch), ALWAYS singing off pitch without an external music source - this is what you suggest and this is where you are wrong.

@damens

@SiMoN6873

@SiMoN6873

@SiMoN6873 However, according to you, this is impossible or the singer must have "Perfect Pitch". You have been wrong all along.

If Jethro Tull can add flutes to rock, why not slide whistles, too? ;)
