  • mmmmmmm OBXa is the best.

  • Yeah! It really rocks!!!

  • VERY FAT sounD AWESOME !

  • Awesome dude...now for the bridge solo!

  • ...jizzing.

  • The OB-Xa was what Van Halen actually used on Jump

  • Was'nt is the SEM Oberheim OB-X of 1979 one used in Jump?

  • oberheim synth rockkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

  • If this synth was a person, he'd have MASSIVE FUCKING TESTICLES

  • is this an 8-voice or 4-voice model? Can that synth line be played on a 4-voice?

  • @soopahsoopah this one is 8 voice. you need at least 5 voices for the jump line. 2 notes for the bass and 3 finger chords on the right.

  • @soopahsoopah But you can play the melody (3 voice) on your 4 voice modell and the bass on another synth :D

  • according to a article i've readsaid EVH the inspiration behind the keyboards of Jump was Hall & Oates' "Kiss On My List"

  • watch?v=WkHsmYwo4Ms

  • Fuckin love the Oberheim

  • Such a brilliant sound. Chill-inducing.

  • There's something visceral that happens when you hear the actual synth playing the song. You just can't do better than this.

Amazingly thick and rich. It's like nutella for the ears.

  • That was badass!!

  • Is this what Eddie used on the song? Just curious.

  • Epic key change!

  • Someone needs to do a keyboard cover of Subdivisions on an OBX.

I tried my best to get the sound out of my Motif XS8 which is close, but still not the real thing man.

    /watch?v=3q0mi7NBVxk

  • I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!

  • Why do people always insist on bitching about who plays what on what synth and you can't play this because they played it on this etc etc? Pathetic!!

Lewis great work man excellent sound from that Oberheim my friend keep up the good work would love to see a cover including the solo :)

  • No they didn't use a moog! You twat! If you where born in the 70's you would understand ! What moog had poly modes in 84 there were 2! Leave Lewis alone. He is playing the right song on the right synth! moog my ass, I have a polymoog and a memorymoog. And a obxa and ob8. And only an ob has a very drift that no others can make! When u grow up and can afford the Synths, then tell me about a moog vs oberheim. what a twat!!!

  • Very nice sound for ever!!!!..... Welcome to neuronaluniverse...

  • cool

  • please please please please do a full cover of this tune on that OBX-a :)

    you are awesome!

  • Amazing machine how it can produce such a beautiful sound is fantastic!

  • This is the orginal synth for jump:P

  • LOL Am I the only one that notices that the people hating on classic analog synths claiming that digital sounds better are the people that can't get their hands on analog and can't afford it?

  • @DuaLeaD OR in most cases, have never played/owned one....

  • @DuaLeaD You're spot on. I think most people who hate have never even tried an analog in real life. If you do a side by side comparison you'll notice there is a huge difference between analog and digital. (a difference that may not be obvious to the newbie who just compares heavily compressed YouTube clips.) Digital can sound good and have usually other advantages, but they are still far from the real thing.

  • any model from other brands that is just as good and can make the same sound?

  • @skylineXpert and does there exsist a german dealer of the oberheim ob-x

  • Rush Subdivisions now plz D:

  • The 5-1-5-1 is played throughout the entire song. Search jump synth track on YouTube and you'll hear it

  • Wow, I love when you shifted the pitch upwards, don't know why but I changed my mood lol.

  • where can one get such a sweet synth like that

  • First preset on there isn't it.

  • thank you for making my day. :]

  • Yeaaaaah. Nothing beats the REAL thing!! Dunno why you had to use a transposer in the 2nd half, but well played!

  • What key is it in?

  • I remember hearing Roland Jupiters back in the day, and for whatever reason, I never heard quite the same sound on a digital. It should be possible to replicate it identically, but maybe no one has figured it out yet.

  • amazing!I like this hardware!

  • If u can't afford the best alt way is to go sonicprojects obx pro softsynth. I just seen a comparison and they both sound the same.

  • Why for you to keep playing the 5-1-5-1 an eight note early in the bass line? stop it!

  • I completely disagree with those that say you can get a digital to sound like this legendary synth. You can get close and you can get a tone that is acceptable and believable...But you just can't beat the original instrument.

As soon as this video started playing, I was amazed at how massive and rich the sound was....The riff just comes ALIVE....

  • The Ion is a decent VA with its own merits, but if you think it can cover the sonic range of an OB-Xa then you're seriously deluding yourself. No VA can. Does the average person care about this? Absolutely not. Do synth nerds? Absolutely.

  • true i do see what you are saying. im no synth racist you know. i understand. i really love the virus sound its without a doubt very nice. though if i didnt have my synths i would be depressed. because i hear inperfections in the analogue sound that is sort of like a turn on for me, haha. good point you made. i know what you are saying. thanks .

  • lewisjp,Thank you for accepting my comments. Some people here would get offended and pissed off if you compare the moog for example to a digital synth no matter how good it is.They think it's blasphemy or something to do that.I think thats tooooo much.I bet in some cases if they dont see whats being played they wont even tell them apart. Thanks and PEACE.

  • I agree. Digital modeling is the affordable way to go, and they're good in their own right. Your average music listener doesn't know the difference between an actual Minimoog, or Arturia's MinimoogV plugin, and doesn't care. And most purists have trouble telling the difference between original and modeled when given the "Pepsi Challenge."

  • Jose, thank u.That's what I'm saying. Not every body can afford a $3000 synth or want to buy a 25 year old synth just because it's real analog. And let's not forget that a talented musician can still make good music that we'd enjoy even with a very basic synth.

  • The sond of the OBI is secon to none, clean your ears out, nothing touches it!

  • Arp Quadra does it in my book.

  • @niteowlsam lmbo

  • You gotta be kidding me - the Ion videos on here are 1/5 the sound of this Oberheim. Granted, if I was stuck with owning just one synth and I had to pick between the OB or Ion I would pick the Ion for it's diverse capabilities, however, there is NO comparison of the two with this patch. This keyboard and the Mini-Moog are THE best two classic synths, hand down.

  • @lenhotz "1/5 the sound of the OB" !!! Do this, quickly switch between this video and the other "jump" video by Synthartist69 and hear the difference.I think the audio of this video is better and there seems to be a reverb effect -something the Ion lacks I think- and that's why this one sounds fatter.Once again, the difference between the 2 - with this patch-is being EXAGGERATED as usual. But again,no 2 synths r supposed to sound the same. Are they?

  • @niteowlsam --no difference?? you need to hear my andromeda!! wow, i cant even believe you said that!!tell the truth, youve never even heard ANY synth until you watched this video --cmon, dont lie now.......

  • @niteowlsam USUALLY true. Moog Prodigy bass v.s. any other bass= win for prodigy everytime. But other than that you're pretty much right.

  • @niteowlsam

well some people feels a certain feeling in the whole body when the sound is exact, and even if another sound is "sort of alike" that feeling might be totally missing. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that some musiclovers loves the lyrics and feeling of the singer and don't care very much for how the soundquality is, while others can love and hover when they hear a song, not even knowing what the lyrics is about at all.

  • @niteowlsam I totally agree.. I am myself a huge fan of old analogue synths and sound, but there is abseloutly nothing the OBX can do that my current synth cannot do equally well, and admittedly technically lots better. I'd still like to have an OBX though :D

  • I'd pick the Alesis Ion or the Korg X 50 to get the same sound.

  • The Ion is quite a nice VA and it actually models the OB filter too. Although the Xa used a curtis chip I belive.

  • yeah, the "same" sound. It won't sound near as good. Analog synths sound so much better in my opinion

  • Dude you didn't jump?

  • this synth is different.

    /watch?v=udwJIUeKpNo

  • Gosh the sound is so rich, I can only imagine what this sounds like in real life.

  • @str8edgepunker This is real life!

  • @str8edgepunker

I was thinking that too, some serious richness and depth to the notes. There are many other talented musicians who have posted and their synths which sound very good for Jump, but this sounds great!

  • @str8edgepunker Very good comment, i love that keyboard, they are soooo gutsy!

  • Damn it; I finally found a keyboard with a better "jump sound" than mine.

  • LOL, This is THE keyboard that originated that "jump sound." Yes, Van Halen used an Oberheim. I believe the same model too. Van Halen used the Oberheim synth on their 1984 through OU812 albums. For the next album, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, Eddie traded the synth in for a power drill...Poundcake anyone?

  • Perfect sound...exactly like the record. He says he did use an OB-XA on the record, but that was the one that kept blowing up and he used OB-8's for the tour...

  • when you go up to standard tuning it sounds fucking identical to the "right here right now" jump intro

  • you might as well Jump!

  • This is the synth that eddie van halen actually used for this song isnt it??

  • yep he tried a Prophet 5 but said they just kept 'burnin up' on em

  • There is the story that in the studio they actually used a memorymoog. The obxa would have been the synth for going live due to the unreliability of the memorymoog.

I own an obx-a and i must say that i cannot get the excact sound of the song , the attacks and saw are different... it might have been that moog :0

  • This is the exact keyboard used on "Jump". I'll Wait was done on a different model - an OB-8, which is very similar to an OBxa, but it has an arpeggiator that was used on "Why Can't This Be Love"

  • Yes. OB-8 has more stable oscillators, but this make it a bit less "fatter" than the OB-Xa

  • yep.

  • Yup.

  • @Theasshole85 You bet.

  • @Theasshole85

yess, this is the exact same synth eddie van halen used for this song (jump)

  • @Theasshole85 actually in the recorbing studio they used a moog to record but a ob in the music video its kinda funny

  • @pfmlz73 Not true. Eddie never recorded with a MOOG. Oberheim OB-XA for the recording and OB-8 live.

  • @garbeaj OBXA was used for live, and the OBX used for recording. The 'a' variant was supposedly better suited for use 'on the road'

  • @spudgunster Interesting considering that Eddie recorded with the OB-XA and used an OB-8 for live...

  • @garbeaj I should have specified, only for the recording of "Jump". OB-8 was used later, I've read.

  • @garbeaj I read it on the internet man! That means it's true! ;) Plus, you didn't make any additional points aside from your original comment. Provide some info to expand yourself.

  • @spudgunster My comments come directly from an interview with Eddie in Guitar Player and Keyboard Magazine...I don't know what you are talking about.

  • Comment removed

  • @Theasshole85 legend has it that it was anOB8, and because it just wasnt quite fat enough, he cv gated 8 of them together to play off the same keyboard .

  • @MrTrescojones CV/gate wouldn't work like that. This only works on monosynths, or, at best, a single note on a polysynth. The OB8 could be MIDI retrofitted. which might do the trick, but I don't think MIDI retro kits were available yet.

  • One of the my fav boards ever.

  • :O you lucky son of a B****, lol thats thats freakin badass XD id give away all my keyboards just to have that one lol badass!!!!! >:D 5/5

  • Why r u playing it soooooo fast ? Slow down .

  • that was really good,I got a request, can you play some flock of seaguls ?

  • what did you stop? i want to hear the rest..

  • The original Oberheim OB-X was used on the recording but Van Halen used this OB-Xa on the road because it used Curtis chip circuitry hence it was more travel friendly.

  • @dudical345 Thanks for the clarification. Well, if anyone claims to hear the difference on the live version and on the studio recording in that sound, I call him nuts :P

  • My favorite synthesizer! The Oberheim OBX. I happen to own a fully-functioning original.

  • is this the original synth that this lead was made with

    ?

  • sure sounds like it, i passed up one of these synths a few years ago and now im kicking myself.

  • Ha ha, great!

You should record your stuff properly though. It's really not hard.

  • Oh my, that's fat

  • Haha! Listen to the first chord! How fat this monster synth is!

  • You play one chord too much, I think it's G

  • its the F chord, i noticed it too.. very good playing though

  • Could you please share the exact chord voicings? It's difficult to discern some of them from the video.

  • how much do these things run at (Canadian)

  • Nice! Could you post your settings for that patch? I recently got an OB-Xa and am learning how to program it. I love it so far!

  • It's the factory preset A1. So, find the cassette for like $10 on the web or try and find the digital stream somewhere. But from what I've managed to get: set two oscs to saw detuned 13+ cents, set filter cutoff to 90%, and resonance to 30%, have envs gated, and throw in a touch of portamento and you should have it.

  • Where Do you get one? I am ready to kill for one, almost literally. I NEED TO KNOW!

  • I got mine off ebay. They come up from time to time. Just keep checking daily, that's what I did for several months. I got a good price because it has some scratches, but it works perfectly. I installed a MIDI kit from Encore Electronics, which was well worth it because it stores the original patches on a chip and has RAM so you can get rid of the battery.

I love it, it is my favorite synth. Fun to play and easy to program. Beefy.

  • Thanks. I'll keep my hopes up.

  • i have efficient fingering

  • No you don't. You use the same fingering for every chord.

  • Very nice sound - I believe that is a factory patch right? Obviously with added fx. Sorry to say it, but you have some wrong chords in there, and your fingering could be more efficient!

  • I've seen an Oberheim OBXa for sale -thinking of selling things to get it. Advert says it's in good condition, but what can I expect from it, as it's early 80s. It should work fine, but could there suddenly be problems with the oscilators, or other parts? Are they expensive to repair? I've read they have CURTIS chips, but now they are more difficult to repair, aren't they? Also, they are 70s/80s classics, but how does it compare with the newer OB12 which is stabler + more patches?

    Any advice

  • I wouldnt go for an OB-12. I have heard them and they are shit. Made by viscount (organ company) if you can get an OBXa, you probably should!

  • ive had an ob-xa and an ob-8, and the xa sounds more meatier due to the TRUE individual cards for voices. Bills can be steep depending on condition. MAKE SURE you test the auto-tune and try to avoid ones with midi retrofits, because theres not a lot of room in an obxa as it is, and they tend to run boiling hot and appallingly with them in.

Chips on the ob range, that tend to go , are VCA'S and VCF'S. average service and repair bill will be from 100 to 300 quid.

    cheers. :-D

  • those analogue stuff is unimitable and can do much more than this very catchy horn sound, ya can do wonderfull warm pad and glissando like the THX sound lol ^^ !!! the software cannot reproduce this fantastic keyboard.

  • you are running it thru a delay/reverb unit, i had that keyboard it does not sound that glamorous withiout reverb/ delay

  • very very nice played!!

  • Most synths (with dual osc sawtooth) can produce this sound but the original is best, as they say.

  • siiiiiiiiiiii!!! yeah!!!

  • Nothing like the original! This synth is one of the best of all time. So far, I didn't hear no other modern keyboard came even close to that sound "feeling" and "weight-n-dirt" sound that this is capable.

  • Every time I go to Guitar Center it's required that I play "Jump". Luckily for me every synth out today has a "Jump"/OB preset. ;)

  • Comment removed

  • oh yeah man!!!

    that's the fucking shit!!

    this kicks ass!!

i'd like to play that song on an original obxa one day too...nothing compares to the original oberheim sound...

    fantastic!!

    good job man^^

    thanks for the vid

  • awesome dude but you got just one thing wrong...before the A frase

  • Sounds Badass! Great playing too.

  • my dad used to own one. i am mad at him for getting rid of it when i was a little kid. Would have loved to play it now

  • that synth is amazing

    it makes me happy

    good video young man

  • Oh god, it's 1984 and I'm at the music store. Now all we need is the big haired guy in the guitar room playing the intro to Crazy Train

  • Awesome !!!!!

  • Yaaaaaaaaaaaaa Van Halen "I said hey you! Who said that? Were have you been?"

  • "I said hey you!, who said that? Baby, how you been? You say you don't know, you won't know, until you dig in."

  • What a synth!!! Amazing. I need one NOW!!

  • awesome ! exact !

  • You can actually see this keyboard in Van Halne's Jump video at 2:46 and at 2:56. This is the one.

  • Actually, in the video he is "playing" an OB-8.

  • @Johnnysynth

If you pay close attention during the synth solo in the video you can see the "120 Programs" plaque next to the logo. So, it's definitely the Xa.

  • @Johnnysynth i did have an ob8. they are wicked as well.

  • @Johnnysynth

Nope. In the video he's playing an OB-Xa. The OB-8 has two additional buttons for the Arpeggiator next to the pitch bend / modulation, if you look @ 2'35 in the original video you can see the left side of the Oberheim and there are no Arpeggiator buttons. @ 2'42 you can see the synth from the right side showing before the Oberheim logo a small silver plate which was the 120 Programs expansion of later OB-Xa models.

  • @Johnnysynth your a nerd

  • @CHRIS1SP11S3D

Well, if you check Birkudo's response, I'm not such a nerd LOL.

  • They dont even make these anymore I think. I would love to get my hands on one but they are pretty rare, this is EXACTLY what Ed used in the record. Compared to other synths that do that tone, this one just sounds huge.

  • Thats a pretty wicked "sawtooth" sound...is that straight up through a digital amp or are you running it throught a cranked tube amp and are you using any extra gain?

  • Ah . i sure want on of thoose! Sounds ....faaaat! hehe :D

  • This sounds nice!

"Spot on" except for the two descending passing chords. This is the same patch most

cover bands use. The difference between it

and the actual "Jump" sound is Eddie added a slight bit of polyphonic portamento. I'm not sure if the Xa has that parameter, or if it's just the OB8.

If you try that mod, you'll hear it then sounds EXACT!!!

  • Nice! This is actually what Eddie used on the record!

  • reminds me of 'welcome to the 1992 US Open golf championship' great sounds

  • one version sounds like from the original recording and the other sounds alot like what they play at the concerts. :)

  • Is this an analog synth? And how can I get that cool sound from "(Keep Feeling) Fascination" by "The Human League"?

  • Geedy lee uses an oberheim for the "Subdivisions" video i wonder if he used it in the recording, all lot of songs from the 80s uses sawtooth wave strings

  • geddy used the oberheim obx on moving pictures and signals

  • I would kill to have one of those Oberheims, always on the look out at garage sales and with the trash at the side of the road! I wish I had one.

  • I will buy this power machine !

  • nice work guy ..

  • In many cultures, there are rituals for the passsageway to

adulthood. Learning "jump" by van halen should be adopted

as a new era of superb rock excellence.

  • haha- good call!

  • Awesome! Oberheim obx-a is the exact keyboard used for the recording of jump. Excellent! 5 stars

  • It's hard to believe such a killer riff went into such a cheesy song.

  • hahaha i get a kick out of people that say any synth can make this sound. BS. theres so many variables in the mechanics of oscillators and filters. softsynths simply lack the dynamic range and depth of a hardware synth.

  • yeah!!!!!!!!!!

  • Most synths can produce this sound - set both waveforms to sawtooth, detune, open up the envelope and BANG! Instant 'jump'.

  • like, wut kind of synths? roland?

    -duncan

  • Even Roland - as long as it is a dual oscillator poly synth with sawtooth waveform capability (and I don't know of any synth that hasn't).

  • omg! i love oberheim synths! especially the obx-a! wher can i find 1?! i want an oberheim obx-a! im in a band & i wanna get n oberheim obx-a synth for us! so if any1 knows wher i can find 1, pleeeezzz let me know!

    -duncan

  • cool man! you own a lot of great synths!

  • have a similar sounding patch on my qs8.2 but it is obviously inferior to the OBX

  • FAB!
