Believe it or not, in order to qualify for the world's record, it had to be made of the exact same materials as a regular popcorn ball. 1,500 pounds of sugar, 1,500 pounds of corn syrup, and 5 pounds of vanilla flavoring were added to 450 pounds of popped popcorn and 50 pounds of salt. But you're right--it was probably not as tasty as a real one!
