@WAYNEkersh You have seen too many Hollywood movies where panic and shouting always ensues and the Hero somehow manages to save everyone regardless. This is not what it's like in the real world. If you had read the accident report for flight 1549, you would know that the crew spent most of the time between the bird strike and the ditching with the engine re-ignite procedure, just as the two in this video. The plane wasn't dropping "thousands" of feet; it was gently gliding.

Technically, that's true, but you have to look at how the statistics are calculated and whether or not the data samples accurately reflect the desired outcome. The AIRLINE INDUSTRY calculates plane crashes per 1 billion miles flown...the odds of a plane crash INCREASE if they calculate miles flown PER PASSENGER.

Did the bird ingestion damage an engine enough to stop it from producing thrust, or was the engine automatically shut down to minimize damage and preserve the engine?

Well I dont know much about Airbus aircrfat much less their procedures, however I did note in yr vid that the decent rate was pretty huge atop the wet stuff !!

Also in my exp I can only relate yr sim to that of a fokker or ERJ, unsure really, I only fly 737's.

No doubt the pilot did a good job, but not every pilot in crippled a plane has had that opportunity. His good fortune in being near perfectly flat water was in part what led to him being heroised by the media. I think this is what Viper19861986 is getting at. And flight simulators are not computer games they are "Flight-Simulators" they are used to train real pilots too.
