  • reverb and delay does the trick. Also put the mics closer to the strings.. and turn up your amp!

  • Hey,

    Are you using chords or just the top string?

    I'm mighty interested :)

  • haha!

  • incredibly well done!

  • you should get a band.

  • marry me? this was awesome!

  • does it take lots of practice to know how to use a bow like you do?

  • That is hard to answer...

    But it's pretty difficult. Takes a lot of hours and patience.

  • do you have an aim or a myspace i can contact you by? i have a few questions

    lol i've been doing some bowing myself

    its niiiiice!!

    well done lad

  • how high are the strings setting on your bridge, does it have to be set like a violin? or the regular settings will work just fine?

  • A little closer than regular..

  • Beautiful. Amazing. Impressive. Sexy. :-)

  • thanks for the cover, what effects do you use?

  • thank you.

    Delay + reverb does the job.

  • very good...sigur ros' music is beautiful and you bring that out in your playing..what are your settings/effects and how much does a cello bow cost?

  • Holy Shjittt, first thought it was fake...but its freakin real!...sweet dude ^^

  • this is great.

  • please please message me and tlel me what you play with your left hand with tabs?!

  • Hi. I don't use any tabs... I just play..

  • well..tell me..do you play all the strings at once for parts? i know in other parts you move the bow across just the high and low strings

  • mostly the low E string.

  • this is so impressive.

  • que coño pinta ahi la pegata de ferrari? jajajaajaajajajaa de todas maneras este tio es dios.

  • Wow. Very interesting.

    To you guys, who are talking about technique, can you tell me whats the difference between cello and violin bow? Ive got only the second one, and would like to learn bowing. Is this possiblie? Or there are some obstacles? Why everybody plays with cello bows, and noone with violin ones?

  • violin bow is smaller and shorter. a contrabass bow is too fat and short, so the obvious compromise is the medium slim and long cello bow :) you get a longer bow and you can still have control. i'm not a string player, but i have written for and worked with many, i'd suggest when you're learning to bow making sure the tip of your dosent go all over (aka side to side) but the up and down motion should be pretty straight and in control. the playing in this vid is a good examble.

  • Im sleepy now...But in a good way like meditation. Good job.

  • Vikreligt nice.... har prøvede at tabe nummeret, men det er ikke lgie det nemmeste :D :P

  • heya guys

    i've made some good progress with harmonics, its fun trying to play the lord of the rings theme song haha.

  • just a quick question, when i see jonsi bowing, he's seems so aggressive but you don't hear the attack of the bow when he changes direction. When i want to bow faster, i have to be very careful/slow at end of each stroke to try to keep the smooth sound. Is there a technique that could help? use more reverb? (i'm currently maxing out my amp's and effects unit's reverb to the fullest so i don't know. Maybe too much rosin too eh?

  • Well;

    I think the 'agressive' parts are mostly distortion/overdrive based, so - it doesn't matter how fast he bows, it's unaudible to hear the strokes differences because it's so heavely distorted.

    The slow strokes are mostly non-HEAVELY overdriven/distorted but using just the amps O/D.

  • If you want more control you should just turn the reverb a tad down, this will give you a bit more control since too much reverb will make it TOO washy. I wouldn't recommend using your amps reverb, just Digital Reverb kranked open will do the trick. Preferable [this is my secret] try to loop it in the FX loop, it will blend the O/D WITH the reverb instead if it being stacked. But;

    it's a matter of personal taste.

  • hey, thanks again for the advice. i think its just a matter off my effects unit not being able to produce enough reverb. I dont have direct control over the decay time. My current solution is just to use a delay off around about 300ms so it echos the reverberated signal, which artificially increases the decay time of the reverb, its sounding quite good now. Ill make a video after ive finished my last exam on friday to show what i've learned so far!

  • Creative solution though.

    Yeah;

    I'd like to see that vid. - should be quite something !!

    Good look with the exams, by the way.

  • Wonderful, you're very good at this.

    What kind of bow do you use? Is it expensive?

  • Thanks.

    It's a cello bow.

    Cost me 60$.

  • btw demo you seem to talk down to people in these comments like you're some master. Unless you're jonsi himself.. we're your videos :P?

  • Oh;

    I'd never say I'm a 'master' - but I've been doing this thing for quite a while as well. Actually I got the guitar-bowing idea when I was 15, but I thought it would never work and I had quite the low self-esteem. Until I was about 18 and discovered Sigur Rós, after that I just got over it and did whot I imagined when I was 15.

  • And yeah;

    I've tried out a lot of things in various ways and they're all different. There's a lot of possibilities and I've done my research and experiments, so yeah - in this regard I might qualify myself as someone who might know more about this than the rest I'm seeing here on YouTube.

  • Even though I'm always giving this guy kudos for doing it very well. If I had the chance I'd def. do a bow jam with him, but alas - he lives in Denmark, I live in the Netherlands.

    - - -

    And mister;

    if I had camera I would've recorded a little vid. of me bowing, but I don't have one + have never posted any vids of me on the internet. Not that I would completely mind though.

  • All in all;

    I'm sorry if you interpretated my advice as 'talking down' - that was completely not the point of the words I was stating.

    So;

    I hope you now, by now, that my intention is good.

  • *know

    - - -

    If there are any questions, I'd love to answer them to the best level I can.

  • ah sorry dude, i got the wrong impression. i found the harmonic at the 3rd fret, but im having a hard time making it sound like the melody jonsi makes in the song. any tips? also when muting the strings down near the bridge do you play all 3 top strings or just the E string?

  • That's alright man.

    - - -

    Well; try the harmonics on the other frets as well ?? Just place your finger around the E string and try bowing in different places. And personally, when I play near the bridge I mostly tend to just use the E string, but you càn do them all 3, but it's hard to make that sound 'nice'.

  • I remember Jonsí saying in an interview that it's like riding a mad horse and that you need to tame it. I actually really agree with him on that. It just takes practise to get the 'feel' for it, but all in all - it isn't thàt hard.

  • cheers mate,yeai tried moving around, got some beautiful sounds as well as haunting ones

  • hah cool i made it sound similar between frets 5 and 3

  • it sounds nice to vary the pressure of my hand to mix low sound with harmonics. thanks for the tip

  • Always man. Glad to have been of service.

    Good luck with it all and I would love to see you in action if you have a cam or so.

    That would be cool.

  • thanks, yea it wasn't the fact i didn't use enough rosin, it just wasn't evenly enough spread along the bow so it slipped. It's sounding much better now. I'm going to give harmonics a go. I've tried some chords but havn't really got much out of it yet.

  • nice cover

    i just started to bow my guitar. It sounds pretty good, but i get squeaks. I guess its the bow slipping? Apply more rosin? I just don't want to go putting on too much rosin if i dont need to. If you could give some advice i'd appreciate it a lot, thanks

  • It is not nessesary to apply that much rosin. Too much is not good.

  • Well;

    depends on whot 'kind' of squeaks you're getting. If you control the bow well enough you can achieve some cool harmonics.

    I'd advise, if you bow the top string, try bowing it in different places - for example;

    - right above the bridge pickup

    - right/close above/to the bridge

    - just in the middle of the neck-/and bridge pickups

  • If you try this and combine playing it the way you'd normally play harmonics, you can get some amazing sounds. And yes;

    even when you're not going for the manual harmonics, you càn achieve them by just exploring the string.

  • And yes;

    don't apply too much rosin, it will also kill your pickup if it's an open one. If you use open pickups I advise trying to find those plastic covers you see in the store that cover the pickups, this will prevent the rosin getting into the pickup and destroying it after a while.

  • A tip ..

    Trying playing harmonics on the upper string. You used the low string in the 'intro' section whilst you could've done the harmonics. Just try it out like you'd normally do harmonics, but this time, do it with the bow.

    Trust me, I've tried it, it works.

    Good luck man, and not bad. I'd try to add a little bass and mid to it, but that's me. [it could be the cam as well]

  • Try* that is.

    - - -

    Btw;

    whot's your setup ??

    I'm guessing a RV-3/RV-5, Overdrive Pedal [Ibanez ??] and a Marshall stack ??

    I've tried doing it via software, via software + hardware effects and I've also tried doing it with a -> Volume Pedal -> Overdrive -> RV-3 -> Marshall MG 100 HDFX stack

    It's still nice to see other folks giving this an attempt.

    - - -

    Don't forget about the harmonics ..

    You'll love it versus the low 'e' string action, trust me. It's much more spastic.

  • I know about the harmonics on the upper string - nice effects. Jonsi does it so well in the intro. This is just my play along version, not meant to be as the orig. version:-)

  • Ah;

    I see. It's all good.

    It's a shame you live in Denmark. If you would've lived in Holland we could've had a 'bow-jam-session' - that would've been pretty cool.

    Good luck with the sounds and all;

    I'll check out another video of you when you decide to post one.

    - - -

    Oh by the way;

    do you use any of this in a band, or do you just do it for 'fun' ??

    [and you still haven't shared the equipment features ;)]

  • Thanks.

    Music is my great hobby and I'm not playing in a band at this time.

    I use Boss DD-5, Digiverb - some times also distortion, wah pedal and equalizer. Marshall JCM 900 valve amp.

  • Hm;

    Digiverb, yeah ?? Hm;

    I prefer the RV-3 or RV-5 over it. And delay ?? I've actually never had to use any delay, but that could be thanks to the RV-3.

    Yeah;

    I thought you were going for the JCM 900.

    Well;

    I'd love to hear a recording from you with decent sound quality, that would be better than the quality of this cam.

  • btw;

    whot kind of guitar do you use ??

    I presume it's an Epiphone ??

  • Epiphone les paul 100
