Presumably, the world that burst through the window opened by the scentists was perpetually shrouded in mist, a kind of nightmarish, hellish place, but the ending leaves questions; did the portal close by itself, or perhaps, the overlap of both worlds only had a limited timespan. The ironic ending works for the movie, what looks like bad acting on Thomas Jane's part, is really a disoriented person, awakening from what seems like a nightmare, having just murdered 4 innocent people..
This movie is one of the best Stephen King's book adaptation, if not he best. Sfx are bad and old-fashioned, but the story is so sharp and strong that this film comes to be a sort of masterpiece. A movie which entirely destroys the religion shit can't be forgotten.
at the end i was like "if he woulda wait like 5 min more they all would survived" they tried to make the end original or something..but its really just stupid...its ruining the whole movie in my opinion...kinda wasting ppl time with that kinda ending. only good in this movie was when the psycho babling whore got shot in the head "halleluja"..this guy was sorta a hero..until the end he got desperate and stupid...shoulda just killed themself while they were at store...bhaa..almost a kewl movie..

The Director was the Director of Shaw Shank, even with a great cast and great director this script was just not as good as people thought it would be. That and showing the creatures with CG was just awful, the movie got to silly when they showed the creatures. And the END OF THE FILM WAS A JOKE! The guy shoots his family and other ppl then help comes, that is an insult to the audience to think we would be touched by that crappy joke of an ending.
@newm123 Its a really good flick, if straying from the original SK short, right up until the end. Those in control of the final product would have been much better off reputation-wise leaving us with a Hitchcock ending, rather than the artsey-fartsy doom & gloom they did.

You should've watched it all. I felt the same way throught to the middle, and thought, ok, it's gotta get better then this. The ending was.....well, really messed up. The woman took a leap of faith, and blindly walked through the valley of the shadow of death and feared no evil. For that she was granted life. She was looked upon as an utter fool.
The others feared the evil and had doubt. Thus they stayed behind and chose death. They were seen as intelligent.

In the bible God never would accepted a human sacrifice. Only the devil would do such a thing, she was feeding the beast following a spirit not God. The CLERK who shot her died because "I'm assuming" he committed murder.
The FOUR people who left with his son, they had faith that they would survive but then once the gas ran out they gave up hope and committed suicide and murder. I would have waited it out kept praying for Gods protection, if he waited and was patient they would of all survived.
The ARMY/GOVT messed up trying to be God by trying to see into another world, that was EVE sin trying to know more than God by eating the apple, you pay the price, pay for your sins unless you repent. So in some sense the FALSE PROPHET did have a point when she mention the splitting of the atoms, and walking on the moon.

Thomas Jane and his group were thought of as the strong willed survivors who would make it. Turned out they were the weakest.
Maybe many people did not like this movie because it had so many Biblical principles in it : P
