I come from Brum too and was at the 1987 Superprix, its featured on you tube by the same guy as this vid.Have a watch of the V8 Vittesse on full bore! Cheers.
When i was a kid watching this with my dad i just looked as them as 'cars'. But now i am 32 and have driven a 400bhp cosworth i can appreciate the power these guys had to race with.....550bhp in 1989...... awesome. Motoring history.
i have driven a rallycross spec sierra (rs500 engine in a ford motorsport rally shell) it was stupidly fast! i had a bmw M3 evo try to overtake me on a section of dual carrageway.... no chance
In Oz they had them competing with the Skylines of the era, it's just they had to pander to the UK Manufacturers who had entered with FWD non Turbo cars (boring).
If BMW could have competed with the straight 6 from the 325i things may have been different.
gpfwestie what are you talking about? They banned non australian cars ie: sierras and skylines, because they walked all over the shitty falcons and commodores!
tdkzero - in the UK RS500's were effectively banned as nothing else could touch them.
I was pointing out there *were* other touring cars that could have competed with Ford - the Oz series proved this briefly when the Skyline and RS500 competed in the same series.
Feck know's what a Falcon or Commodore is though, weren't they 80's computers ?
The Nissan GTR whooped the RS500 in the ATCC. The only reason that the Aussies banned the turbo charged cars is that they could not stand that their 70's technology V8'S were getting slaughtered by advanced European and Jap machinery. Hence to why the ATCC is a two manufacturer cahmpionship now. The Aussies have always been bad losers!
Seems to me that the chasing pilot did a little trick to unset the car of the leader by touching its rear bumper while standing on its left side, enabling the overtake...
Why did they have that barrier on the left just before the Halfords hairpin? It looks like it would stop any overtaking up the inside, seems pointless to me.
I believe it is because the roundabout is an opposite camber bend and there is a small yump just in the braking zone of the corner.
If cars went close beside the Armco then the left hand side of the car will be off the ground just like what Karl Jones did at the 1988 Birmingham Superprix or the F3000 cars as well.
So I think the barrier is there to encourage the cars to go wider into the corner but I never fully understood the purpose of the barrier though.
Just look at all the powersliding, with all the 500+bph rear wheel drive fords laying down rubber on every corner exit!
It should be standard body shell (apart from maybe a small spoiler/splitter) 6speed manual gearbox, custom springs/dampers and a tuned turbo engine, that would sort the men from the boys!
Its sad to watch thses videos, it makes you think that BTCC is now a shadow of its former self. :(
i have a couple of btcc videos, 1988-1989 and 1990 seaons, they get you on the edge of your seat. andy rouse was god in my opinion,to build and race and win in your own car deserves respect, thats why other drivers had rouse prepared cars ;)
I was there watching thatand can tell you everyone was on the edge of their seats, cheering on either driver. Matt Neal should have settled for second (though I'm glad he didn't), as him and plato together always ends in tears.
500hp in BTCC, seems spaceage, in my opinion the current 2litre should be kept and a class similar to the specs of the late 80's or early 90's should be introduced, in WTCC as well, because current BTCC cars are so damn slow, the only way a driver can make an overtaking move stick is by taking the other guy off (eg snetterton last year)
totally agree. but its getting better now the S2000 regs have come in the bmw 320s and vectras are back along with alfa 156s, but there is stll the silly little civics, should be honda accourds instead.
JUST WOW!!!!! THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST PIECES OF TRACK RACING I'VE EVER SEEN! My God that is some pure talent right there on both drivers. Andy for attacking so closely and pulling off the pass (albeit a bit dirty) and the other for being able to hold him off for so long. I LOVE all that opposite lock so close to the barrier! <<<
the greatest car ever built, the rs500,i was 10 when these were racing, still just as impressive, still have a massive following, still all worth a min of £15000,i met tim harvey at the 2007 porsche carrera cup in which he races, i asked which is better the porker or the rs ? tim replied the rs. enough said, cheeRS

What an amazing race. They should bring back street races and get rid of the rubbish formula that we have now.
And to think Andy Rouse did all that but John Cleland in the Astra won it overall!
