When I was a kid you were allowed to swim above the falls. We had to be careful not to lose focus because of the current. Now that I am old and hopefully wiser, I would never swim there!
Back in the late 70's we spent several days at the falls. Back then, there weren't so many restrictions and most people spent the day lying in the water above the falls... totally awesome. Too bad a combination of stupidity & liability has taken that joy away. Last time I was there, just a few years ago, I ventured behind the falls... it's well worth the effort and I would recommend it, although not for small children. Wonderful place, full of fond memories for me.

on second look, I think this IS me! This was posted shortly after my trip. See those people watching from the lower boulder, I have a pic of this jump from their perspective! WOW! Caught being a jackass!
I did this, it's not THAT dangerous. After kayaking the lower river the previous day, my group and I spent the day relaxing at the base of the falls. All of us jumped this boulder, and no one died. Be mindful of where you jump, there are large rocks just under the surface. There is a cave behind the falls as well for those who dare boulder around in that area. It is VERY slick due to algae growth. There have been many deaths due to this kind of activity, just ask the locals.
It's an area open to the public. The guy probably got away with it because the authorities thought darwinism would take over and they wouldn't have to worry about it. Although technically there are signs prohibiting swimming, the park service is normally pretty lax about people swimming until someone drowns or people do stupid shit like this.
Many, many ignorant souls like this guy have been drowned over the years at Cumberland Falls. Young folks often feel invincible. Just enjoy watching the beauty of the Falls; don't jump in. BTW, Cumberland Falls is only one of two places in the world to see a moonbow that can be witnessed there at certain times. The other, I think, is in Kenya.
ah yes, I've heard of the moonbow there. I hear its somewhat difficult to predict when it will show up, I could be wrong. I lived in KY for a couple of years and didn't get to see it. :(
Been there several times and did swim further down from the falls. I almost drown, the currents there are very decieving. Dangerous place to swim, beautiful place to watch.
Complete idiot.. I live here, ten miles from the falls. It is ignorance like that, that get people killed. Not just the jackass that jumps in the water, but the rescuers that have to go get them. This is pure stupidity!!
Not only is that dangerous because of drowning or breaking his neck or back, but that water is very polluted because of the factories on the river, and he could swallow some of it and end up glowing in the dark. ;) Followed by an extreme case of DEADNESS!
I'll tell you what. You go up and down that river and tell me how many factories you see on that river. Better idea, look at the aerial image of the area on mapquest and see if you see anything but forests along that river.
This comment was made out of pure ignorance, there is some sewage treatment runoff in several areas, but perhaps you should educate yourself on how that actually works before making dimwit comments. All rivers have some form of pollution, although the concentration does vary. The Cumberland did have a reputation for being one of the more polluted rivers, but thanks to efforts by the park service, environmental groups, and local citizens, it has since been cleaned up significantly.

is this legal? like if i went down there would they let me do that?
MistuhCoolio 3 years ago
no it's not allowed. Please do not attempt it either. It is dangerous because of the undercurrents.
lesliejs 3 years ago
well if it's not allowed then how did this guy get away with it? isn't this a place where you pay to get into it?
