Been there done that. No matter how tough you think you are, or how much heat you can take, let me tell ya. All you can think of is getting out and getting that gear off. It feels like you are wearing red hot clothes which you pretty much are. Thankfully these days the bunker gear is better and it doesn't happen as much. But if it does, you'll know it in a BIG hurry.
looks like maybe convection and radiation... a combination of both... that was to blame for the over heating of the firefighters... that happens alot where I live in Ky... especially during the summers when the high is like 107...
The adrenaline takes over and blocks out the whole concept of the heat. My crew were fighting a barn fire much smaller than this. It wasn't until the ashpalt drive we were standing on starting sinking that we backed out. We looked at our turn outs and found charred spots. This was a PBI coat and the manufacturer when we called them said it would only do that when exposed to an excess of 1500 degrees. I can only imagine what these guys had hitting them with such a massive fuel load.
