I find the Smart ForTwo appealing from an engineering/design/use standpoint. It reminds me of what Saturn was doing before GM screwed it up, when it was taking a fresh look at building cars -- stuff like its space frame and swap-out plastic body panels.

I drove one of these for a few hundred miles...........most uncomfortable suspension on a car i've ever driven. Also the gearbox, considering its mostly "fly by wire" stuff nowadays, seems more like "message by carrier pigeon" taking an age to change.. JUST DON'T TRY AND OVERTAKE ANYTHING WHEN GOING UP A HILL. YOU WON'T MAKE IT !!!!.

Some disclaimers... I'm used to driving manuals with low horsepower (my current car is a 90-hp VW turbo diesel, before that a <120-hp Saturn SL). So I had no trouble (actually liked) the weird Smart automated manual transmission; and I'm used to driving cars that don't go 0-60 in 6 seconds. If only the car looked more like a roadster, maybe people who've never actually driven one wouldn't get so bent about it. It feels like a street legal (and not *too* unsafe) go-kart... what's not to like?

I live in a big(ish) city and test drove a Smart for the heck of it a couple weeks ago -- just to see for myself what it's all about. Not crazy about the "look-at-me" factor, but it is a *blast* to drive! A real eye-opener. Even on a congested highway, it was fine at 65+ mph -- handling was solid, car felt sure-footed and safe. For fun factor, I would get this car over a Fiesta, Fit or Daewoo (er, Chevy) Sonic any day. It only wouldn't be good if you spend your days driving on open freeways.

This car costs the same as a Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit, and Chevy Sonic +/- a grand or two. The Fiesta is rated similar in MPG and the Chevy and Honda a bit less but they all accelerate faster, are bigger, better built, designed better, and are safer for high speed crashes. Why would anyone buy the Smart?

@Thecarguy1254 Most people don't understand that the smart is designed for city use. It's meant to be a vehicle that's easy to maneuver and park in packed urban cities, i.e. NYC. Everyone compares it to the Fiesta (which I drive) as well as many other b-segment cars, comparing it's fuel efficiency and interior volume. Yeah it's mileage isn't as good as other larger cars, but it wasn't designed for the same reason as the b-segment "commuter" cars.

@MJ4cars97 Here's something for you to take a look at. IIHS performed several crash tests. Honda Accord vs Fit, Toyota Camry vs Yaris, Mercedes C300 vs smart fortwo. The smart held up the best out of the three despite being the lightest vehicle against the heaviest vehicle. The Yaris did the worst out of the small cars.
