As a child, I was told by my parents that god cared about all of us and had a special plan for everyone, but I learned very early that god never answered prayers, no matter how desperate the need. God never seemed to help anyone, as far as I could see, not the starving children in Africa, not my family, no one at all. It didn't take me long to stop believing in that nonsense, and once I did, my life got better, because I relied on myself rather than an invisible being in the sky.
Indoctrination of children does not always work. I am a perfect example of that. My parents were staunch protestants, and I went to church, sunday school, daily prayers, teen bible study group once a week (my parents forced me to go,they thought it might turn me around, but I hated it), and I've been an atheist as long as I can remember, despite my parents strenuous efforts. I was skeptical at 8, and nonbelieving at 10. It didn't take in my case, although my cousins are all religious.
I'm so glad I went back to watch this! Because I recognized the Carlin clip in the thumbnail I figured it was just a reposting of that bit and didn't click on it. Glad I took a closer look at the video length! I'm looking forward to more on this series.
@BornWithoutReligion - Oh shit, Emily... I bet a lot of people think that, because my views are really low on this one, compared to the others in the Psych series. Didn't even think about that! FAIL... Thanks, and I should have another one posted toward the beginning of December!
Thank you for making me aware of your video. I found it highly informative! This is a topic I have internally explored for many years now. It amazes me how one can create experiences, construct observations daily yet not question the most influential component(s) of their existence. Reinforcement via socialization I fine to be one of the most disdainful routes one can travel. Many of the same processes you find to reinforce the god concept, the importance of religion is (cont)
Do you think it is only a "modicum of control garnered for the indoctrinators"? I see the pay off (regarding levels of being influenced) as being highly significant for parents who travel this route.
(I hope to see you around my channel sometime...look forward to getting to know you..Peace)
I was tempted just now, to send it to a deluded, yet not stupid young man, I've recently crossed paths with. But I've decided that it would be received as proselytizing, as would most strong doses of common sense. I suspect that he would not be reachable, due to his programming to reject reality. The "You have been lied to" virus, can be perplexing to install.
I know firsthand that indoctrination for fundamentalist kids becomes part of their innate nature. So many aspects of the child are affected: personality, emotions (or suppression thereof), worldview, critical thinking, automatic rejection of anything contrary to their doctrine, and so on.
It is truly wrong to force a child to believe in your dogma simply because you say so - with no verifiable proof. They trust you wholeheartedly and you devastatingly betray that trust.
@inmodiaswetrust that's good to hear, you guys are good together. I was a little bummed when you guys stopped appearing in each others vids. I enjoyed the video btw :)
Quite right about the hell concept. Innocent children are traumatized out of their minds in some cases, like a teacher I had who was terrified of not going to mass in case she broke any one or more of the hundreds of arbitrary rules she could break at any time. This was pure mind control and even when people broaden their horizons, they are still insecure and wonder "What if I'm wrong?" and that stops SO many people from even looking at the analysis, let alone other options.
7:44...lol! umm...never noticed that before!:D thank you for this vid.the ideas i am exploring in my deconversion series deal so much with why i feel i was so "ripe" to become a christian, and why it was so hard to break free.all very true, modias.looking forward to the next videos!
I just kind of laugh at that terrorist alarm sheet. paranoia run rampant. Build your world around a paranoid fear that is as likely to happen as a volcano erupting and you've punished your own self 99.999999999% of the time in fear of the .000000001% bad thing. unfuckingbelievable.
@TruthSurge - Exactly! I was going to put up the one from the airport that everyone's more familiar with, but I thought the one with the "suggested actions" or whatever for the government to do was even more ridiculous... By the way, I LOVE your ongoing series "Excavating the Empty Tomb: Beyond a Reasonable Doubt"! Excellent work on your part, and I can't wait to see more...
Modias, are you and Bunny still together? i know it might be none of my bussiness and you might not want to answer this, but surely you can get her to make some videos right?
@DeemotheAtheist - We are indeed! She is a bit miffed at the Tewbz at the moment, largely due to what Brett Keane did recently (which thing, you must be thinking, LOL). I just think she could use some outside encouragement...
Awesome dissertation on child abuse at the hands of the religious. Looking forward to more. As a bio teacher, I can attest to the severity of the indoctrination when I try to teach my fundie students.
@saxmanchiro - If you're up for it, I'd love to discuss that with you at some point. Maybe make a part 2... I've never had the chance to talk to anyone responsible for educating young kids, and I think pointing that out in this climate would be invaluable!
@InModiasWeTrust Certainly. Anytime. The ages I teach are Juniors and Seniors in high school, southern USA Baptist country, rural and fully god engaged. Every single faculty, staff and admin member are deep into their Jesus. I know of myself and one other, who are not theists. Of course, the other is a bio teacher as well.
@saxmanchiro I wonder, what are some of the (in their opinions) derogitory, and dehumanizing terms, that they have attempted to label you with?
How do you deal with a communal bigotry, against anyone who embraces reality, when that bigotry is based on a blend of misinformation, and an astonishing absence of awareness?
What are some of the cracks in their facades, that you've learned to leverage open, to insert skepticism into?
Are you shunned via pleas for you to embrace faith, or via silence?
@DonQuixotedeKaw They do not 'dehumanize' me or utter 'derogitory' comments my way. How do I deal with it? I embrace the chance to be maybe their first real teacher who didn't opine in a science class. I embrace the chance to give them the tools of skepticism. I embrace the chance to bring them facts. I love it. But, I also get sad when they struggle with the info and try to insert their imaginary friend into the lesson. I respectfully tell them they cannot. It's so sad to witness.

When we expose children to one religion, it inevitably indoctrinates them. If we expose children to many religions it unequivocally inoculates them.

What's more likely, a man walks on water or a story is told about a man who walks on water in a time of superstition and scientific ignorance?
You can apply the same logic on any supernatural claim in the bible.
No one has ever broken the laws of physics and never will.
