  • There's a large difference between a beginner's and experienced player's sound. The beginner has a very basic tone(imagine a long beeping noise), while a good player has a strong, vibrant sound (ex, in solos). How can I achieve this tone? Vibrato doesn't do much for me in this field. Is there any things that people typically do wrong that affects sound in a strong way?

  • im a beginner, so thts y it sounds weird...thnk u

  • i cnt hardly play a nice tune when im playing silent night and the open d string sounds weird

  • @KeraTidwell1147 the d string might sound wierd because the string is false. when the string is false, it makes a weird sound at the end. so if it is false, you have to change the string. it can also happen on the other strings too. hope this helps :)

  • Wow. No more bounce. Thanks much.

  • oooOOOOoooooH Thank you!

  • holy shit u got all the answers to my problems :o

  • So the pinky's NOT supposed to touch the screw? When you say that the bow is bouncing, I'm assuming that the bow hits the strings, then bounces away from it, breaking the hair-string contact? Because my situation isn't the bouncing, it's that it bounces in a more subtle manner, like the hair maintains contact with the strings, but then the rest of the bow oscillates, making it sound like the worst vibrato w/ out moving a finger, ever. Diagnosis?

  • @hbar45 I know a lot of people who have this problem. You need to make sure that your bowhold is just like how Kim has shown in this tutorial and you have to make sure you have the strength and control in you wrist, arm and fingers to be able to keep the bow steady. It just takes practice and focus on the area you need to work on (in this case, bow control). =]

  • @HEIGHTSIXFIVE

At intermediate levels where everyone has their own technique problems, it matters, but not so much. Once you move past that stage, however, improper bow grip will, at best, but you way behind the pack (as your sound quality will be compromised, in addition to your control and technical ability) and at the worst you'll be out with an overuse injury due to muscle strain. Bow grip can be the difference between being a satisfactory player (you'll still might be somewhat successful

  • a lot of help for my NYSSMA thanks

  • I do not see the significance of how you hold the bow. My friend has been playing for like 8 years and he says there's no real difference in how you hold it.

  • Bouncing has been a problem for me since I started playing years ago, and only recently am I getting it under control. I never had a teacher that addressed that like you just did! All they would really say was "just apply more pressure" and that was just making it worse!

  • Great, great insight. Much appreciated!

  • weird.. the way you say not to hold it (with thumb touching the index finger) is how my 6th grade orchestra teacher told us to hold it =(0__o)=

Now that I'm actually researching things to better my playing (unfortunately there are no violin teachers where I now live) I'm finding quite a bit of what that orchestra teacher taught was wrong.

Thank you so much for the videos and please keep them coming!
