I remember this ceremony! 'Cause after that speech, Billy Joel was playing "River of Dreams" and there's a pause in the song. Instead of continuing on, Billy sat at the piano, stared at his watch and went "Valuable air time passing by. Bono. Bono. Bono." Loved it!
U2 was cool in the 90s...now...a bunch of old farts saying they want to save the world...and put on great shows, but not cutting edge music like before...

The idea that Bono seriously thinks U2 does anything seriously alternative and is not totally 100% mainstream is the only thing funny/shocking about video.
@Nonoyawns Listen to Zooropa and then say that again with a straight face. Or if you want something newer, try "Fez-Being Born" or "Cedars of Lebanon" from their latest one for example. Good luck to you.
@JoRu94 Challenge taken, comment stands. Anyone can throw around weak notions of political dissatisfaction. The simplistic issues raised in those songs are no more "fuck[ing] up the mainstream" than adolescent political facebook statuses trying to prove the poster is a "rebel'.
@RideMyBMW : You must be too young to remember that anything Nirvana did, the Pixies did before them. Because Nirvana, as great as they were (honestly, I'm a fan!), didn't do anything that the Pixies didn't do 10 years earlier. So, do I think U2 deserved this recognition? FUCK. YES.
@skrason "I remember watching Kurt come through and thinking, "God, this music is nuclear," This is really splitting the atom. They raised the temperature for everybody. Manufactured pop never looked so cold as when that heat was around.Nirvana made everything else look silly."
Bono, quoted in Lorraine Ali, "Cries From The Heart" - Newsweek 10/28/2002
@skrason "I remember watching Kurt come through and thinking, "God, this music is nuclear," This is really splitting the atom. They raised the temperature for everybody. Manufactured pop never looked so cold as when that heat was around.Nirvana made everything else look silly."
Bono, quoted in Lorraine Ali, "Cries From The Heart" - Newsweek 10/28/2002
A day or so earlier, at an MTV Rock the Vote party, George Stephanopoulus gave a speech where he talked about the "political vitality of the young people." So Bono is being cheeky b/c there was a bit of snickering about that remark from a guy in his early 30's.
I Love U2 (all their works form 1980 to 1997 and I like the also No Line On The Horizon) but by now Bono and all the other guys are totaly different. "Fuck up the mainstream"...is a phrase that now, look at this guys has no more sense. Sadness.
@Jysti Sad to say it but you may be probably right. We have to understand that everybody chages thru the years. I don't judge them. They are in their middle age. parents. etc etc. They are now just protecting their economic interests. However I still love them...
I love U2, but how did they win the Alternative Act award? I mean they can win any award in my book, and they did aome alternative stuff in Achtung Bbay, Zooropa and Pop, but still.
yes hit it on the head .bono is being payed by corporate america and the filthy globalists to spread there anti american filth .he was on opera about a year ago and stated that the united states should become a third world country.and we should all starve ...sounds like the end effects of globalism ti the U.S that is kinda of strange anyways hes a huge patsy or fake .
You ever notice how Bono ALWAYS has a "horse" or "frog in his throat" whenever he gives an acceptance speech? Always clearing his throat. ALWAYS! Go watch some more of his acceptance speeches and you'll see what I mean. It's odd.
It started in the begining of the 90s when he started smoking. I believe that smoking had a big impact on that horse/frog you are talking about. In one video Bono even says something about his father not wanting him to smoke. I guess we all should listen to are parents ;o)
Its a great album totally diif from what they done or do to this day. Alternative album winner totally strange because the last track(an what a track it is! is the wanderer feat. Johnny Cash) is totally beautiful. An i do believe that the 90's was the best decde for music to date. thanks to nevermind cause those cheesy metal bands an tut tut videos where terrible an micheal bolton garbage!!!!
I thought he was implying that he shouldn't be in the same category as alternative bands like the Pumpkins because they can't play big arenas but U2 can. I thought Bono may have been sarcastic in saying he'd like the Pumpkins to play arenas, but that's probably the cynic in me coming out. Especially since I've seen other U2 interviews where Bono's been complementary of the Pumpkins.
I suppose he wasn't happy with the "Alternative", but it was for Zooropa, and Zooropa is one of a kind, not really a main stream rock album. I think it's great it won an award, whatever category it was in.
I like the stab he takes at The Smashing Pumpkins. Lol.
