Thanks! Just did this to my old Apple in-ear headphones.

Not that I'm stupid, but the hole was smaller than headset cable for me as well, so I just widened it a bit with an electric drill. :)

@hatyg The point is to use the ends off the headphones you like and use those to replace the standard Apple headphone ends so you get the sound/comfort you like from your old headphones while keeping the mic/music contron from the apple headphones.

You should just add an auxiliary plug so you can add whichever headphones you choose... it also makes replacing broken apple headphones a sinch.

@gingy2222 this video is great! I love that I can use any headset I want! Apple earbuds hurt my ears and fall out most of the time when I move . . . to use them I either have to be a statue or hang them over top of my ears

It is however, a bit confusing at the beginning of this video, when you show the 'preferred headset' as an already completed pair, BUT I knew what you meant!

Thanks i've done this successfully with 2 pair of earphones and i'm quite satisfied. Not mentioning the other 5 pair that i ruined trying this but that was just because i had a very old soldering iron that never got hot enough to melt the solder fast because it got rained on i think. I got a new iron now and this has worked every time so far :D

Ok what am i doing wrong? I've tried this with like 5 earphones and failed each time. Can somebody explain how to tell what color wire goes where? and Are you supposed to remove the original solder before you solder on the new cable?

@dadcolvin the presents of a third wire should not matter... just use the original 2 unless the third wire is one that frayed from the other two... that could be an issue

centrios 9mm in-earphones cheap radio shack brand you can google that in image search to find them... or circuit city if you are in Canada, I don't know if it is their brand actually but they carry it. Actually I think I've seen them shoppers drug mart too. I'd suggest using a brand with a bigger cord to pull the wire through. I look forward to your video.

Thanks for this tut! It provides a little more detail in addition to TechSpank's tut. I will try this on my new iPod Shuffle 4GB's headphones. You are forced to use the controls, as the buttons are on the stock earbuds. I will try this tomorrow, will post a vid reply of the process and how they work.

ahh it would all depend on if the wire got damaged or not.... if not, just follow the steps in the video to saudering back the wires to the earbud, and it should work fine

Awesome tutorial, but I have an issue with the earbuds. They constantly fall out, AND my ears are two different sizes (apparently my entire family suffers from it).

Is this possible with a pair of headphones? Because if I could mod a set of Skull Candy on-the-ears, I would be incredibly happy.

Actually since this video came out there is not much reason to mod your headphones other than estetics anymore. The Griffin smartalk adapter is as good or better for this type of thing as you can use whatever headset you like. Check it out.

The blue headset at the beginning is mine I did earlier. The pink headset was my girlfriend's headset I did during this video. Continuity errors are in every major production... that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it haha.
