this show is my favorit its so funny and helps me learn how to make fabulous food for family and i i will be a pro in no time!!!!! thanks food net work channel.=)
6 cups old fashioned oatmeal 1/4 cup chopped almonds 1/4 cup chopped pecans 3 tablespoons Splenda 1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt 1/3 cup of sugar-free syrup 1/4 cup pure honey or sugar-free imitation honey 1/4 cup unsweetened pineapple juice 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup dried apricots Pam nonstick spray Much lower in saturated fat, carbs are from fructose and complex grain and less empty calories
Actually, if the bar AB was holding is, as I suspect, a Nature Valley Oats 'n Honey bar, then it only has 80mg of sodium. I think he was reading the info for *two* bars, not one. How do I know? I was comparing stats. I've got a box of those suckers right here. [For shame? Perhaps.]
In case anyone is interested, the info for two individually wrapped bars is:
Two bars of Nature Valley is greater, volume-wise, than his homemade granola bar. I think. I can't do a price comparison since I don't know how much rolled oats, wheat germ, sunflower seeds, slivered almonds, and dried fruit are. A box of 12 Oats 'n Honey bars is a about 3-4 dollars at Pathmark. It would be cost efficient to make your own bars if you had most of the stuff already or if you intend on making them a lot, I guess.
Also, in case you're thinking that AB's bars are better since you know what you're putting into them, here's a list of ingredients for the store-bought variety.
Whole grain rolled oats, sugar, canola oil, crisp rice with soy protein (rice flour, soy protein concentrate, sugar, malt, salf), honey, brown sugar syrup, salt, soy lecithin, baking soda, natural flavor, peanut flour, almond flour, pecan flour.
Bit suspicious, but not that bad compared to most mass-produced foods.
Sorry for the masses of comments. I'm not trying to say that AB's granola bars suck or anything [I may actually try his recipe], I'm just trying to be fair and objective and informative and stuff. Seems like the store-bought bars [at least Nature Valley's] aren't THAT bad.
Even at 80g of sodium per bar, it still has more sodium than one of AB's granola bars. Still, interesting leg work, and for it you deserve not to be in the red.
Turns out there is nothing wrong with MSG. In blind tests people who claim to be allergic fail to show any symtoms when the don't know they are eating MSG
To answer the sunflower question, AB likes the shells on, but I prefer the shells off.

Just to clarify, ya don't have to use shelled sunflower seeds, you can use seeded.

The sunflower directions say "Raw Unshelled sunflower seeds". Is Unshelled/Shelled similar to Flammable/Inflammable?

Just made em! Worried about the sunflower seeds though...

I think I would rather eat the Pemmican than any of the power bars he made. Meat and fat for the win!
GeneralSeptem 1 year ago
so he just put those sunflower seeds in there without taking the shells off?

No, I was playing the devil's advocate. And avoiding homework.

Still, I don't think the Nature Valley bars taste as good as AB's.

fair assessment, but i like to control the amount of sweetness (NV are too sweet for me), and AB's are cheaper. Also, natural flavor can mean MSG

An alleged test that concluded that some people's allergic reaction to MSG was psychosomatic does not meant there's 'nothing wrong with MSG'.
