Being mostly second generation colonists from England and living in isolated communities in a huge land, they very probably spoke with English regional accents. Modern American speech sounds to me like an amalgam of Scots and English. However, at the time of the drive for independence there can only have been very few Scots there anyway. The Sottish and Irish diaspora began much later. Andrew Jackson spoke with a distinct Ulster accent for example.
