FLAWLESS....fuckin flawless....makes me wonder why i even chose the guitar as an outlet when im so far from discipline, skill, and creativity. oh yeah.....RAGE!
@guitar16 You can't make anything of beauty while angry. In fact, I'm not sure there is even an excuse to get angry, ever, when music like this is in our world.
@Flaminglog perhaps when you've gone thru many of lifes struggles i can see that. but when i picked up the guitar at 14 it was all rage and blowing that steam out with the guitar, playing fast and angrily. it was still a strong passionate emotion that can argueably be felt like that of Xuefei in peace and tranquility. its just the opposite side of the same coin my friend. =) cheers to beautiful music like this!
Her smile at the end showed the little and shy girl inside. Her techiques were superb. With her hair falling down on her forehead and the smoothing tremolo of the so beautiful Sueño en la Floresta piece, the combo created such a wonderful experience! I love her playing!
Love the sound of this guitar. The sustain of the instrument really stands out where she plays those sliding notes around 0:33 - sounds almost like something from a Pat Metheny track! Masterful playing.
Barrios' works are like Chopin's for guitar - very difficult , but full of emotion and passion - kind of sweet sorrow - an awesome playing and interpretation one
having heard some people complain that her playing is mechanical this should put to rest any credibility to that argument. her expressiveness and tremolo were sublime.
After I saw this video 2 months ago I was inspired. So I decided to take a musical journey and learn this song. I just finished it today and I have to say it feels like one of the biggest accomplishments of my life.... This song has taught me that anything is possible with proper dedication.
She plays this (technically) a lot better than most performers that I've seen on youtube. But it lacks a bit of dynamics. It is NOT robotic, unlike the previous poster has said.
Xuefei's tremolo is simply unmatched. I find John Williams' tremolo much less linear in comparison. The melody feels disrupted whenever John uses his p finger, but not so when Xuefei plays.
Great playing of this piece, but having seen her live at the wigmore hall a few years ago, I really don't like the tone of Smallmans.
Williams did indeed buy a Bernabé Imperial, but I've no idea why, or if he plans to use that in preference to his Smallmans at any point. If anyone does know, I'd be most interested to find out.
This guitar, like the piece (and the woman) are works of perfection in art. It's wrong to compare one with another, like saying a Van Gogh is "better" than a Constable, or vice versa. Sure, there are other guitars, pieces (and women) but each is just to be appreciated with appropriate guitar. Any guitar that "blew away" this instrument would need a health warning to listen to.
An interesting contrast with her performance from 2000.This did ripen and it is unquestionably objectively great...from the tone to the phrasing or spiritual affect.
To not like this would be to have a shovel up the posterior.
Come on! That's a 2001 Greg Smallman guitar mate! Did u know how hard and how long the waiting list is to get this guitar? Even John Williams uses it for years until his Paulino Bernabe Royal guitar is made!!!
Yes, I know exactly what the guitar is and waiting lists don't make a guitar great. Sure, Smallmans are loud and are easy to make a decent sound on even with crap nails but they lack clarity and punch because of the slow response of the soundboard. Simon Marty guitars (other significant Australian guitar) blow them away both in terms of volume and clarity whilst still sounding like a guitar with all the tonal colours you'd get from a traditional style. (With a 2.5 year waiting list as well).
Not sure but he definitely bought a Bernabe. However this year (or late last year) when he came to Perth, Australia, Greg Smallman came to the concert with 5 guitars for Williams to try so I'm not sure what he is doing.

Very good play, but please honey, buy yourself a nice guitar. Your are always loud and noisy but lack character and finesse. Loud guitars aren't always the best guitars. Try a Panhuyzen for example
I was right there at this concert! :) I liked this piece along with Fandangos y Boleros the best. And I think it's about time Xuefei took Asturias and Koyunbaba out of her concert program. She is obviously fed up of playing them over and over again for years.
I keep returning to this, and I think it's the best rendition on youtube. The biggest challenge in this piece is fluent phrasing, not only in the tremolo parts, and she does it exceptionally well.
Listen to how much her playing and technique has improved from her video playing the same song in 2000! I saw her last year, and she blew my mind in a way no other classical guitarist I've seen has been able to do. I do prefer the version of this song recorded live in San Francisco, though. It's on youtube as well.
Extremely well played. Only thing I don't like is the suddenly aggressive mood at the end of the first tremolo part. Strange she's not the only one who does that!
Superb...such raw talent and heavenly grace!

Whoever thinks this great guitarist's play is robotic should be pitied. It just shows he or she has not (or cannot) listen to music.
This piece is so full of life. Technique at the service of music. This is what it is. Just enjoy the music.
