You present a good point there. However the powers that be have decided otherwise, despite the fact that SK is able to defend themselves. Keep in mind that the two countries are still at war with each other since the Korean War started. SK wants the US there to supplement and bolster their defenses (in addition SK does have US weapons and equipment to complement Sk made ones), combined with ominous signs in the NK media and paranoia on both sides of the border.

Don't count the SK just yet, the SK military and defense budget easily equals the NK. However the similarities end there. SK has 4x the population, 2x the finances, more infrastructure and transportation capabilities than that of NK. In NK the military personnel makes 1:3-4 persons of the total population. The only clear advantage that NK military has in terms of conventional weapons are a higher number of tanks, air craft, helicopters and service ships. SK is able to offset this advantage.

Less than a day later of the announcement South Korean government officials started asking that the US standby S Korea as a friend and ally. SK still wants the US to bolster their defenses against any aggression from NK, even though they have 4x the population, 3x the finances and 2x the instructure and transportation networks as NK. North Korea is over-rated. Even though they have nuclear weapons, they do not have the population to sustain a prolong war and their country's infrastructure does not have the ware withal to match the South Koreans.

One, S.K. has a pop. that is 4x bigger than N.K.

Two, S.K. is much richer, and has the infrastructure to outmatch N.K. forces where-ever the fight is.

Third, S.K. has a defense budget that is equal to N.K.

So in terms of conventional arms and numbers, S.K. can easily repel the N.K.

I would not go as far as to say that. The NK government is just playing nuke politics more than anything else. What they want is clout and anything regarding their conclave, they want a say in it and have the strength to back it. If it becomes a shooting war, the SK will not take any chances, especially with the US involved. Japan and China would also gear up just in case. FYI the SK and NK are still technically at war with one another.

Don't be too certain of that, the Chinese and the NK are sort of like blood-brothers in terms of politics. To the Chinese they wanted a pro-communist state to protect Manchuria, which was historically the rally point of foreign invasion from Japan. If there is an incident btw SK and NK and then the US gets involved, doubtless China and Russia would drawn into because their countries are in the region. To the NK, having the nukes is like having another stack of poker chips.

I was speaking hypothetically, in my earlier comments, you will find that I have written that any incident between NK and SK that may occur would naturally draw the attention of the US, China and Russia. The SK government is hoping to keep US forces involved, since they greatly supplement their defense forces along the border. Not to mention the SK army is no slouch.

And keep in mind the other countries who may have problems with NK are the Japanese, SK, China, and Russia.
