Lenny is the most TALENTED player we have seen. But talent alone is not the whole story, nor is it enough. To go the distance and evolve needs a more complete package. Sadly Lenny lacked that. People may scoff at bands like the Stones etc. as ol foggies, but they live. Lenny was a genius. I wish someone was there to take care of him and look out for him. His legacy lives. I wish more people knew about him.
@dostfez his legacy starts with how much exposure big name musicians will give him through their performances and interviews.
Some real major players in classical music like Antonio Vivaldi would remained unkown to this day if musicians wouldn't have championed him as the genius he was.
Does anyone know the date of this clip (not of the overall doco, but of the specific Breau/Farlow clip). I'm trying to figure out roughly when that guitar was made.
0:50 is just...wow. Britabe said it, the best guitar player ever to this day but I would like to add, the best guitar player that ever will be in my lifetime and yours? and way way way beyond.
@gunbir I would put Tommy at the top of that list... remember that Tommy is playing an Acoustic which is harder (I've heard him play electric and its amazing as well) and the level of skill between Tommy and Lenny in my opinion isn't comparable... Type in "Tommy Emmanuel 12 bar" and click the first vid
@helegaran tommy and lenny are my favorite and both are just as good. lenny died young and had drugs but was a pure jazzmen. Tommys had a good life and is not a jazz man. They were good friends too
@helegaran are you kidding. Tommy is fine but not in a top flight jazz player/ improvisors league. you want to see fingerstyle than look up Doyle Dykes, Scotty Anderson. Acoustic is harder? Good god do you even play? Lenny Breau was a visionary and a virtuoso.
Lenny Breau is one of the greatest guitarist to ever pick up the instrument. Not just jazz guitarist but one of the greatest in the complete realm of guitar. For sheer technical ability alone he is in my top 5
Man, what a power Chet enters with in the beginning of Lennys solo. Freaking great. I cant believe I never really heard Lenny before. As a huge fan of Ted Greene, I see where he is coming from though. Thanks for uploading.
Watching this doc was when I first heard of Lenny; put it this way, he both inspired me to pick up the guitar, and discouraged me because I knew I'd never be as great as he was - I had heard of Farlow of course, but it was Breau he CHANGED the way I looked at the guitar forever.. geez, he was amazing...
Lenny is the best guitar player ever to this day imo. for all you see and hear these days, its ALL been done before.....and beyond....by Lenny B. He was a monster before players were monsters.
I saw him in Nashville in 1982. He was amazing!

I've said it before - Lenny Breau is a standard for all musicians. He's at the level of Blll Evans, and I think he'd be OK with that.

Notice how he plays the low note as a harmonic, placing it on top of the voicing, and creating "impossible" chords. Very cool.
