Everybody knows when you're talking to somebody famous for acting, singing, writing etc you're meant to comment on their more recent work, constantly talking about things from decades ago is like saying "Nothing you've done recently is worth mentioning". How can somebody who's been a talk show host for so long completely fuck that up to the extent that it seems like a parody?
the constant modesty and humility these two human beings display is what makes this interview watchable.
throughout the interview i was continually amazed at how they found the self-restraint and dignity to show those virtues, but maybe they weren't even trying, maybe they were just being themselves...
I seriously think these two were acting. The reason they were there was to promote LITTLE FOCKERS, but they probably decided to riff and mess around a little. DeNiro is known for being really shy, and for fiercely protecting his privacy. He doesn't like interviews. Hoffman is somewhat of an extrovert, and I think he was there to give DeNiro support so he wouldn't have to speak much. I think if he really hadn't wanted to be there, he would have just not shown up in the first place.
My God... De Niro is just sitting there thinking 'Is it over yet?'
Letterman should have known you can't bring De Niro to a talk show and expect him to make small talk. He doesn't wanna be there anyway, so make good use of the little time you have while he's on the air. One of the worst Letterman interviews I've ever seen.
I'm not sure people realize how good Letterman is at his job. With the possible exception of Carson, he's reached a level nobody else has. This is as good and funny an interview as possibly could've resulted from having 2 people on of this magnitude, especially where one is a bit uncomfortable. they all had fun
both of them handle this entire interview flawlessly lol...
watching it on tv the 1st time was awkward enough...but watching it again 1/2 a year later is hilarious!!! my favorite is when both of them just stare into space while realizing there is no use in answering some questions.
i do respect Letterman...but I think almost anyone could have conducted a better interview (i dont mean everynight, but for this one time lol) I dont need a sheet listing every movie they made.
This interview, though it's very funny at times, seems like a missed opportunty doesn't it? De Niro never was on Letterman and doesn't do many interviews so this is probably not set up. The awkwardness is real, and Letterman's arrogance towards De Niro appears to be disguised insecurity from not being able to connect with this guy.
Terrible interview, dumb questions, annoying interviewer + audience, non-stop laughter and stupidity!!! Is there laughing gas in the room?! Feel sorry for DeNiro and Hoffman, Dustin even asked DeNiro a question at some point. I hate Letterman cause I think he has a very lazy, laid-back and unprofessional style of questioning, and he is also annoying and laughs his ass off along with the audience.
Can anyone bring Jack Nicholson to Talk Shows or specifically to David Letterman? I mean that guy is not an introvert like De Niro is and speaks eloquently and I think he has things to say on the show. But why the hell is he not appearing on Talk Shows? I saw on IMDB that he has not appeared on TV shows since 1971, did he experienced something bad doing TV?
@MrDarkstalker15 Nicholson has a principle of not doing TV shows, only execption the oscars. He hardly does any press for his movies, he doesn't have to.
@mitchburns82 So true. Letterman can be quite annoying, so is the audience for that matter. Just an opinion, but I think I Mr DeNiro may have the same opinion.
The bulk of the interview though is David simply listing the movies these 2 actors have appeared in and letting the audience applaud. What more could these men have done? Gotten up and taken a bow each time? I don't think any of us can speak for certain as to how any of them were feeling. It seems clear that it's not an interview so much as Dave saying, "and then you did such and such and that was tremendous!"
@jopiano i disagree. he was asking plenty of other questions that would have been really interesting if given answers, but deniro is so painfully shy, he chooses to just say yes or no, if anything. deniro also chuckles when dave gets frustrated by the simple yes or no answers. he knows he's not contributing too much, which is why it was great that dustin was more than pleased to chime in. it was akwardly amusing nonetheless.
@jopiano You gotta put in consideration that Robert has a wide well known rep. for being terrible in interviews. He hates them and it would be hard for anyone to keep things sailing smooth with him there. Also Dave had to keep this thing going for over 25 mins. I thought the idea of taking out some of the iconic movies they were in was a good move. Got the audience involved and remembering and it made for some good stories about the experience making them
@jopiano Yep! David thought, "Wow I've got 2 of the greatest actors in cinema history on my show. How can I REALLY boost my ratings? I know! I'll just keep mentioning these iconic films and get the audience up on their feet each time!"
@NovusOrdo2012 It's not about being a clown, or being entertaining, it's about being polite. He wouldn't even look at his host in the eyes. And even if he was just being himself, that doesn't make him less of a rude guest.
@Ficehdulah No, DeNiro is just painfully shy. He never does telly chat shows. The fact that he is on Letterman's show is a huge compliment to Letterman.
de niro cracks me up...he just doesn't give a shit..ahahahahaa
