for everyone that likes this rhythm, check out the last call from jaco- aka moon, it is in 7.5 (or 15 if you like), 6 and 10 at the same time (a great band from belgium, the founder of aka moon(nasa na back than) actually played and recorded with the young coleman and introduced him to the balanced harmony concepts...)
Clave is not always simply 3/2, 2/3, Rumba, Son, Bossa Nova etc.
Clave (key) can be any bell pattern that functions as an underlying rhythmic key, there are many types of clave, in fact you can invent your own, but other known bell patterns include Gahu, Soukous, Bembe, Shiko, Juju, there are many more, take a look online.
Edit: Steve enters on sax one triplet later than the bassist, and the bassist meets him then... That means the bassist entered incorrectly at first... Correct?
Well, I'm sure the whole thing is subdived by triplets, just look at Steve where he taps beats... That means the basic groove on cowbell + congas is in 5/4. The drums play the groove you told (thanks), that means a quite simple rhythm in 4/4...
Counting in eighth notes the clave is in 15/8. Drums are in 6/4 - Start counting 6s on the downbeats from 1.08 and you'll hear it. Its an accent on beat 1, 2 and the upbeat of 5 but he really plays around with it. Love this tune
From what I can say, the groove on bell really is on 15, the bass player plays on 7+8+9=24 beats... The trick is that the whole thing isn't subdivided by eights, but by triplets - you can see this by watching the bassist and Steve, how they feel the rhythm. I have no idea what time the drummer plays in though, so I think it is more complex than just two meters..:-) Love this music...
I believe its Oct 23 1996, maybe at the Chapiteau de la Pepiniere - Steve Coleman (as) Andy Milne (pn) David Dyson (bs) Sean Rickman (dm) Miguel Anga Diaz (pc) Rosangela Silvestre (dance)
The statement by burnettemusic is ridiculous and offensive. This music is all static rhythms. It has NO harmony and NO melodies. Coleman's idea of a melody is a one-note repeated rhythm. (2:11). Everything before that sounds like a Chinese water torture with boring repetition and no variety. Don't insult Ellington, Armstrong, Coltrane or Parker by comparing them to this rubbish.
Steve Coleman is perhaps the "Louis Armstrong", "Duke Ellington", "Charlie Parker", "Miles Davis" and "John Coltrane" of the 21st Century... Thanks for posting this ocncert! Peace, Cb
I'd say 12
speedskis777 5 days ago
it's in 15/8, with steve's clave setting up the grouping 2+2+3+2+3+3, (hitting 1 rest 2 rest 3 and rest 1 rest 2 and rest 3 and rest)

No. It's a 15 beat over a 12. Bass and drums are playing a 3 bar phrase in 4/4. Piano is playing the 15/4 phrase.
These cycles meet again after five 3 bar phrases in 4/4 (60 beats)
They are the rhythm people, indeed.
mnose 1 year ago 4
@mnose It definitely is 5/4 with triplets, just read the discussion bellow and look where steve taps the beats...
vasikgreif 1 year ago
Sounds like 5/4 with triplets

I love the timings they use. If you think their timing patterns are strange, try listening to some King Crimson...
ChildovGhad 1 year ago
crimson are relatively accessible in comparison to colemans 'cyclic' playing, cycles of 23 over a 7 or something, just whacked.
although discipline is an awesome kc song!

Pretty sure this one is a Pythagorean arrangement of rhythm - 3/4/5. He's talked about this arrangement in his master classes and in his writings.
mingusman84 2 years ago
Could you please explain this? I don't hear the 3 there... Bass on 8, Drums 4, Cowbel + Piano 5...???
vasikgreif 2 years ago
the pulse is in triple time. if you need proof, look at how steve and sean are nodding to the music.
mingusman84 2 years ago
That's what I wrote in one of my comments below...:-) I thought you mean there is some part on three beats...
vasikgreif 2 years ago
I think the clave part is really a hoax, maybe to add texture, cos it doesn't seem to add up!
Mossey5 2 years ago
What do you mean by clave part? I don't hear any clave there...

Actually the whole pattern is something like 12/4 on the drums - ties in with the bass line 24/8 thing
