In my most humble opinion nobody, but nobody on the planet, plays the guitar like Gilmour. I hadn't listened to them in about 20 years and was watching a Bio of the band. That made me dig out my albums and tapes. It was like meeting up with an old lover again and finding that the magic is still there ;-D
To this day, Gilmour has always been my favorite guitarist and this is probably my favorite song. There is no improvement need. Not a single discordant note. It's absolutely perfect.
I play since I was like 15 years old (15 years back now...) and I truly...and I mean truly feel like my music is pure sh!t comparing to this masterpiece. Such a bummer, man. I mean, how can u ever top this? I say today music sucks way too much. This was golden age dudes. And lemme tell ya one other thing, I hope this thing plays on my funeral, while church dude is holding eulogy, there ya go...
@Blueeys200 I was 13 when I first heard Pink Floyd, It was 1980 after The Wall came out, but Ummagumma was the first I listened to through a classmate, and it was such an ear-opener. A year later this performance was broadcasted on television, and Echoes reamains an all time favourite. Enjoy your musical discoveries! :-)
i remember one day when i was young, me and my brother were in a little shack whith a bunch of tools n stuff. there was a little radio in there and i put in a floyd cd. then we closed the shack door and started spray painting on a piece of wood or. all of a sudden, my uncle walks in and says, "whoa! what the hell are you guys doing!" little did i know until a couple years later what he thought we were trying to do. thats a floyd experiance i wont forget. iv been a Floydian since 10 years old....
NickMason: (verb) to excite one's brain, through rythmic stimulation to the point of excretion from the auditory orafaces. This is generally a well recieved act. "Hey man, Last night I saw the Floyd, and I got NickMasoned so hard that my brain spilled all over this girl; but she was cool with it."
Seriously, this might be the best piece of music ever. Absolutely genius, so creative. The kind of band pink floyd were, i'm not sure its really possible for there to be another. I love the bassline just after the gilmour solo (which is also mindblowing).
@Robstailey CERTAIN drugs like LSD, shrooms and many other psychedelics helped influence this music. people can't deny that those drugs assisted musical creativity. just look at how the music changed from the late 60s and on...
think about the Beatles and their transformation. it was because of LSD. different states of consciousnesses produce different moods of music.
in no way am i saying you need to be high to enjoy this music. BUT you can thank LSD for helping create it.
@HarberNoEvil1 actually, yes they did use certain drugs. Roger talked about smoking pot in his young days and they all probably took acid at least in the late 60s if not after, ya know? because to be realistic thats when lots and lots and lots of people took acid and they were probably one of them. i'm not trying to make a big deal out of it, i just want to be practical about it
@HarberNoEvil1 Aye Dave says that as he is sitting there high as fuck and Roger just did an interview last month Howard stern where he said he had a few years in the early 70s where he was stoned on hash almost all the time. Wake up and smell the shit for fuck sake dave and roger are both geniuses in their respective fields because they just had it in them but anybody that thinks they didn't smoke it up at least sometimes is a fuckin spastic cunt.
@HarberNoEvil1 hahahahah dude yeah Gilmour was very high in that interview as he said that...they experimented with mind-altering substances....okay? you can't deny it. its okay. be realistic and practical about it man
Saw them live a few times back in the day. I wish I could have been in the amphitheater with them in Pompeii. Listening to Old Floyd...like a time that should have been.
You dont need drugs to appreciate this kind of music but like it or not, drugs enhance the experience in a way you could never ever dream of. Dont listen to this on drugs if you wish but you people dont know what you are missing.
i've been playing guitar for 4 years and i've listened many bands, but i've never seen such a beauty like echoes and fat old sun.truly u are the god of guitar.
Anyone know what type of organ he plays about 3/4 of the way through the song? An old Thomas? I don't think Hammond used those rotary type controls that can be seen in that shot? Beautiful mellow sound!
Went to Pompeii (part of a long trip in Italy) just because of them and this video. I had 3 hours to spend before moving to the next location but the city was closed due to extreme winds. I spent one hour holding the iron fence and listening to echoes on my headphones before leaving. Next time..
@atsnyr Heretic. I hate when people insult the pope or christians. It's so easy to talk shit online. Let the pope and Jesus in peace. I pray for your salvation right now.
@atsnyr I will not start a religious debate, but this little girl was just saying that Pink Floyd were inspired by god. And what did you answered to her ? Aaarghhh, STFU, Jesus was just an impostor. That was not very cool !
@praetorianus72 I'm supposed to do background checks now? I just found it funny anyone would bring god to Pink Floyd youtube clip. Both Glimour and Waters are non-believers.
Gilmour is a little more than a decade older than me, but my hair was almost as long as his by the time that this movie was filmed in '72. Noticed that David had short hair by the time that Waters left, like I had, and grew it long(er) again in the late 80s-early 90s.(like I had for all of the 90s) He won't be able to try to for a third time, but I have.
Last summer I was there in Pompeii, at this place I stood... I didn't care about gladiators and people under magma, all I thought was "Pink Floyd played here".
I listened to the full music and wrote on a paper words this song makes me think about step by step. I wrote 2 pages, can any other artist make you feel so much things?
I remember when this movie originally came out on VHS video for the first time in the late 80s, back when I had one of the first crude Dolby 5.1 stereo setups, connected to 4 Bose speakers & a woofer to my (at the time) "big screen" 27" stereo tube TV...filled up a bowl, kicked back in my lounger and then proceeded to get my mind completely blown..lol.
