that's because the guitar he used while recording this song which gave that specific feedback(mainly because the guitar was cheap) got stolen around 1990 or so. which sucks

Actually, Billy still has it. He also used it to write and record "1979". I read that Billy tried to use it for recording for Teargarden, but for some reason it didn't work. A shame, as that really is a historic guitar in the history of SP...

Ahh yes, you're talking about that video clip that popped up on Kerry Brown's blog, yeah? I seem to remember reading that and the story was that when time came to actually record the song properly, it refused to work. Maybe he did use it after all!

Then again, for years I thought the Mayo guitar was the one James plays in the "Rocket" video until I saw that blog post.

Definitely. I feel that way about his music in general, but there's something about the way he executes solos that feels so sublimely organic - his guitar sings with joy and wails with sorrow, bending and writhing in all the right ways and with just the right pace.

@scrolllocknumlock The first time I saw The Smashing Pumpkins, back on the Siamese Dream tour, I had no clue Billy Corgan was anything but a rhythm guitarist. I was blown away at the show when it was him, and not Iha, tearing up the solos.

Doesn't sound bored. Just down an octave and no parts where his voice gets "rough". And maybe Billy CAN'T reach that higher octave anymore. Seemed like he had to try even back in 2000 to do it. Im surprised he wouldnt get vocal training to try and expand his range again. It seems like he got tone training but no range training.

Could be just the sound quality of the recording or the acoustics of the venue. The original studio recording on good headphones, even on CD is absolutely stunning. The original sounds simple yet sentimental, fresh and new every time I listen to it- even after right around a decade after the first time I heard this song.
