The hobbyking fpv patch antenna is a really poor patch antenna. It only just gets a bit further than an omni. Being a "supposed" 14dbi means with a 11 dbi advantage you should get at least 3 times the distance minimum, each 3dbi extra doubles distance.
I have the 900mhz 100mw kit from HK and actually i reach about 1200 meters with patch antenna but i think it can reach more with some bipolar antenna :)
You really should have made the point that you cannot fly with a 2.4ghz Tx/Rx and a 2.4ghz VideoTx/Rx. They interfere with one anotherbecause they are on the same frequency
hey, just wondering, i am building "drone" for my 8th grade final physics project, i need an fpv system. looking to get about 250 yards out of it. would the 100mw be enough? or should i go with the 200 mw? price is also an issue. by the way, i saw a parkflyer fpv system on nitroplanes, but it has no specs for mw, frequency, range, and whether it is ntsc or pal. it costs $36 but i am a bit worried about buying it. any ideas?
test really needs to be done properly with an aircraft, also with so many people now flying 2.4 its not something I would be comfortable using (but want the range) what else is available, and does using a 2.4ghz tx and 2.4ghz fpv system cause problems? I will look on rcgroups but you guys should mention this sort of stuff! Great channel by the way, love your vids guys, keep it up!
Not really a great comparison because your signals are being largely affected by ground-clutter that won't affect the signal from a model. RCModelReviews has a 200mW 5.8GHz system operating without noise at 1.1Kms which is almost 0.7 miles. A 2.4GHz system of the same power will reach further and a 900MHz will reach further still. A full line up of ground-to-air comparisons is in the works. Great video though guys!
You need to do it on a plane to get a real test. I have flown with the 900mhz (800 mw) system at about 800feet and 1k away with no drop out at all (omni Directional)
great videos guys, i just watched all of them and i was so entertained, you guys work great together, are very funny, and have great onfo. thanks to everyone involved in making this show tv quality for sure
You mentioned in the video that there are alternate lenses available. Where can I find them. Also, is there a case available for the board cameras? Thx!
Agreed! Ground tests don't translate well to range in the air! I've flown two miles away and back, over a thousand feet high without a single frame of video lost, only to have to signal drop out almost completely on landing approach when I get close to the trees and house... ;)
Maybe you guys can make a video of exactly every component needed and a full description of each component to help us understand everything we need to get started in FPV and prices. I may be interested in this, we'll see. Thanks for the info.!
Thanks for doing this, guys - loving your show, too! Since you're on the subject of range, I'd like to see how various antenna options compare on the 900Mhz system...
you should do the same test but throw in you transmitter for your plane and see how they interfere. more so your 2.4ghz radio for your rc link and then the 900mhz transmitter for the video on at the same. i think you will find that the 900mhz will cause the 2.4 to have nasty lock outs
Nice to see an actual side by side comparison, but I agree with some of the others, a "ground level" test seems to draw so many inaccuracies. Taking into account how well the area is populated, you never know how many WiFi hotspots you were just surrounded by, or what other wireless equipment that is being used.
@bluefisherking I'm thinking there will be follow up videos to this one anyway, as you can't fly using 2,4Ghz and use a 2,4Ghz video system at the same time and indeed 900Mhz isn't allowed in many countries because emergency services use that.
Wouldn't it be best to test it with the TX higher than the RX? That would simulate you flying, instead of being on level ground. Park the car with the TX on a big hill and see how far you can get. I bet you get double the distance, if not more. A level ground test dosen't mean much to me, I want to know how it does while flying.
I wasn't there obviously, but it seemed to me that while both frequencies had signal lock the 900mhz had higher quality, less glitching and jumpiness? Also, if you're controlling the aircraft with 2.4Ghz are you prevented from using the 2.4Ghz transmitter? Or do they share the space on different channels? Thanks for this out of the ordinary test, I'm interested in FPV but thus far haven't taken the plunge...
The reason 900mhz had a clearer picture is because its a longer wavelength than the 2400mhz (2.4Ghz) system. This lets the signal penetrate and reflect obstacles better.
Yeah, I've always heard that if you use the 2.4GHz FPV you can't use a 2.4GHz TX, you'd have to use a 72MHz TX if you use the 2.4GHz FPV stuff. Looks like the 900MHz FPV will be the way to go.

Isn't that shielded glass where the cameras are? That's a BMW right? I think range through the air might be more.

thanks for doing this practical hands on test.
Would REALLY like to see how the 5.8GHz compares.
UK = can't use 900MHz, and flying on 2.4GHz, so 5.8MHz is the logical choice, especially now that HK has some equivalent stuff in 5.8...
Pretty please, update or compare with 5.8?
