@BohemianConspiracy It was what has come to be known as the "Solo Album Tour", Jon had just released Olias of Sunhillow, Howe released "Beginnings" Squire had "Fish Out of Water" and Moraz had "I", Alan White had an album out too as I recall. They all played stuff from their solo albums, with a most wonderous harp solo by Jon.
..Annie is my absolute perfect woman..Perfect!!..What a song; What a phenomenal track.-love that oh oh oho ho oh hohoooo bit. on the chorus..Unreal vibe man!!
I remember a lady in a Santa Rosa, CA record store, 1979, suggested Renaissance when I asked her for suggestions of bands. So, I purchased Azure d' Or, and it remains about my third favorite album from the band. The classic period, as with most prog bands, is my favorite (early 70s) Renaissance is my second favorite Prog band ,after YES.
I can smile through my tears with this! I too love this song, this group, this spirit! I love to feel it lift my heart, and I carry this vibration with me....to those who wish we were 'back then;' do not despair, we can join to reawaken to this feeling, regain the happy optimism! Maybe some of you would like to explore this global Renaissance?
We co-created it once before, and we don't need to let it slip away ever again!
What a great, uplifting song. I wonder how much more wonderful music we would have been able to enjoy had they made albums through the 80's, 90's and to the present. I've been blessed to hear the voice of an angel.....Annie.
I would like to correct that. Is there a better SINGER? I think not. ;) And no, I am not being patronizing at all, non-fans, listen for yourself, the incredible clarity, tonal purity and massive, well connected range will not be emulated for years and years to come. Though...you need to listen to Ashes are burning or Scheherazade to understand the full scope of her repertoire.
The songs 'I Think of You', and 'At the Harbor' really send chiils up my spine. And 'Carpet of the Sun' is my favorite, but 'Winter Tree' is right up there.
Saw Renassaince first at Winterland, San Francisco opening for Rick Wakeman' s King Arthur tour on Halloween night. Then at Oakland stadium - they opened for the Eagles. I've heard they weren't big on the west coast, but had a huge following on the East coast.
I missed this era of music, but I'm happy Renaissance made "videos" way back then. If you listen to this with headphones there are walls of sound coming at you! It's magic.
All their songs changed my life! Undoubtably, my alltime favorite group of all times!!! They still sound so wonderful after so many years. Love seeing this early footage and realising they are once again so well appreciated by many today. How can one beat that voice and those vocals, the band? I have seen them in concert twice and nearly a third time and saw Annie alone in a NJ threater, an intimate setting - entralling and totally amazing. Yes, Annie can sing! I own all their albums; golden!
God, my mom played this song when I was young, and I discovered it again as a teen going through her collection. It's a weird song for me, the verse is so...and I mean this with respect...lame for a guy...but then the chorus comes in, and it's just beautiful...("have you seen a better day...). Takes me back. Jeckyll and Hyde is great, and the rest of the album just gets better.
Your mother must be around my age. The entire premise of the song falls around a well used poetical primise taken from the Bible that altough your life may feel like winter time, spring is not far behind
oh yeah, borg.. that is the same Ritchie you're thinking of, only he's been playing Renaissance (the era, not the band) music with Blackmore's Night since the late 90's, although periodically they do cover some Purple or Rainbow songs too. They play some traditional style pieces, some fused with other styles (Rock, Blues, Flamenco, Metal, Folk from around Europe, Jazz - you know Ritchie plays it all), some that are their own pieces in traditional stle, etc. They do same with Mideival + Baroque.
yeah that Blackmore's Night version is more traditionalist (since I tend to be a purist this is OK with me) + I think Ritchie's one of the all time talents anyway, having been able to conquer just about any genre he wanted to. Probably the most diverse guitarist since Django Reinhardt the Jazz giant. But I like these guys version too..
Correct me if I'm wrong. Renaissance was formed by Keith Relf, Jim McCarty, Jane Relf, and others. But the band disinigrated and Jim McCarty reformed it. But then he soon left the band afterwords. Is this how the story goes? Write me a letter on youtube explaining this to me.
This IS how story goes. McCarty/Relf/Relf/ Hawken/Cennamo formed Ren mark 1. 1971/2 proved a big change year people joined and left daily it seemed until they became Haslam/Camp/Tout/ Sullivan/Hendry and released Prologue in 72 with 2 songs written by McCarty still.
Hendry left and Ashes Are Burning was realeased in 73. Dunford was writing most songs (still 1 song by McCarty) but not officially a member.
Dunford officially joined for Turn of the Cards in 74.
To complete the story, Keith Relf/McCarty /Cennamo formed Armageddon with 1 LP in c75. Very heavy stuff!
McCarty/Jane Relf/ Cennamo/Hawken (alas Keith Relf RIP) re-formed in c 77 as "Illusion". Illusion was the title of the 2nd LP the Mk1 Renaissance released.
your damm right , they should be in the rock and roll hall of fame. the people who run the rock and roll hall of fame dont truely understand grest bands at all.
There are a lot of bands who should be in the rock n roll hall of fame but aren't. And those who are in the hall of fame but shouldn't be. Like Madonna for instance.
I saw Renaissance sing this live in IIRC 1979 at Liverpool University Student Union. There is another great song on the Ashes Are Burning LP/CD called The Harbour. Annie's voice on that is so hauntingly beautiful. I wish there was a video of all their work.
The necklace was a specially commisioned one off piece given to Annie by Roy Wood for their engagement. Annie wore it for many years on stage. Annie, last year, put it up for auction along with her Thea Porter dress for the Scherazade concert in New York.
I noticed the necklace too, b/c when I was about 12 I had a crush on her and wanted to be exactly about her in every way, so I noticed a lot of details!!:P
Beautiful "Art-Rock" band of the seventies. I'm 45 but did not really discover them until around early/mid 80's. Fell in love with the unusual union of music styles & Annie's beautifuly trained voice. In just one song they did-"Touching Once", the styles run the gammit- from progressive rock & driving jazz thru to(as their name implys), Renaissance(choral)Madgrils. It's said Annie Haslam was working towards being a costume designer before joining.
Great band. I remember seeing them in early 80's in S. California. I had all their old record in Vinyl Lp, then my ex-wife trashed them when I filed for divorce. I can't find all their recordings on CD. Damm.
I remember listening to them in the 70's. My parents digged them. It certainly geared me towards playing bass which I picked up in the ealry 80's. I remember his bass solos were pretty tight, but can;t find any recordings either. Or maybe I haven't tried hard enough.
There is a sweet bass solo on Renaissance Live at Carnegie Hall, where they have an extended version of "Ashes are Burning." I don't know if it is hard to find their music now. I have records, but for awhile I think it was out of print until the late 90s when the albums were released on CD...I think.
A tremendous band, capturing a classical, yet pop sound, with great vocals, and more. This song, along with the others, makes it my favorite of their albums.(Azure D'or)
Love Renaissance -- have all their stuff, back to the Relf days.
Great song but the video is unintentionally kind of funny, what with Jon & Mick lip synching to what's clearly Annie's backing vocals, and Terry (drummer) looking utterly silly!
Try MAGENTA, a modern welsh prog-rock group with Christina Booth, they also produced a disk with Annie Haslam called "Night and Day" (only 4 tracks). Also Curved Air with Sonja Kristina, and Girlschool (all female), all of the above can be found on YouTube.
Ah yes, cheers! I know of these bands I already listen to Curved Air but still think Annie has the advantage with her angelic voice! MAGENTA sounds like an exciting band! do you know what Mostly Autumn are like?
I wanted to thank you for posting your treasure trove of Renaissance clips. I'm a huge fan of theirs (I spent a fortune on Japanese remastered CDs) and have never seen this video before. Thanks God Annie survived her cancer and is living and painting in New Hope, Pennsylvania
this is great! I used to sing along to all the albums when I was a kid, well I'm only 30 but still! I love her voice! song for all seasons is still one of my favorites. I have almost all the albums on vinyl and love the sound with the crackly needle.
I am very impressed that you can appreciate Renaissance just as much as I did when I was 27, which was about 30 years ago!
High quality music is high quality no matter which generation it may be from. Back then, I told my friends that Renaissance would stand up to the "test of time", and it has come true in my opinion... One of the greatest memories of my life was having a pass to go backstage and meet all the members of the band, and helping them out a little bit.
the shame is you missed the greatest era in music , late 60s to 1979 music took a serious dive after that,of coarse there are exceptions, but for the most part blechhhh. and watching a video from the era does no justice you had to be there. oh the majesty ,like you were seeing god and all angels jamming
Thanks so much for this post! I began my love for Annie and Renaissance right here with this album and song. Had to work my way backwards through their gorgeous back catalog. I have been a prog nut my entire life, slow to this band, but worth the wait. We need some of this on DVD! Music will never be this good again.
Clue: We hear Annie singing the lead and the back vocals at the same time at some points. I knew that she was a very skillful singer, but not to that point!
Perhaps you do have brilliant powers of observation. Nice to hear from a fellow Renaissance fan. What has happened to music? Their body of work is so superior. The difference is almost frightening!
I'm by no means an expert on Renaissance as I have only A Song For All Seasons. This song is not such a great song. It's just an OK song. They can do much better than that. I enjoyed it anyway.
Good point. I think I'm falling for Annie H. all over again. What a beautiful sound! I'm glad we had them before videos. The mind and the music supplied the imagry...
It is the studio version, with multi-tracking and everything, but lighten up! This was pre-MTV, and the production values weren't the greatest for anyone then. As for your complaint that Secret Mission is out of sync, many of the vids on YouTube are. It happens during their compression process.
Music just doesn't get any better than this - such quality! Seeing the band live at this time I remember Annie drinking from a metal goblet and giggling a lot while she sang. Such a warm person; reflected in her voice too. Love this video, thanks ephillipblack.
a primeira vez que ouvi essa maraviha eu tinha 14 anos e nunca mais esqueci dessa banda......hoje tenho 47 anos

I grew up right outside of new hope and went to private school there...
I saw them in the 80s and had a front row seat..now I am a progressive musician..in a world that isn't accepting. love them.

this is great! I used to sing along to all the albums when I was a kid, well I'm only 30 but still! I love her voice! song for all seasons is still one of my favorites. I have almost all the albums on vinyl and love the sound with the crackly needle.

AWESOME!!! I'm 27 and also grew up listening to my mom's Renaissance records, which I still have!!

Usually I am glad that I am too young to have experienced the 70s - I hate that decade. But I gotta admit: Renaissance is cool!

the shame is you missed the greatest era in music , late 60s to 1979 music took a serious dive after that,of coarse there are exceptions, but for the most part blechhhh. and watching a video from the era does no justice you had to be there. oh the majesty ,like you were seeing god and all angels jamming

Get a grip: This is not a live performance!
Saw Renaissance several times back in the day. They were one of my fave bands growing up..

Thanks so much for this post! I began my love for Annie and Renaissance right here with this album and song. Had to work my way backwards through their gorgeous back catalog. I have been a prog nut my entire life, slow to this band, but worth the wait. We need some of this on DVD! Music will never be this good again.

tell more of your brilliant powers of observation - how exactly do know if they are lip syncing?
mfriedlin 5 years ago

The mind and the music supplied the imagry...

another lame video. it's just the studio version with the lip syncing. great song, great band.

I actually saw this several times on HBO around 1980. Renaissance didn't need videos, not with the images they conjoured up in your head!

There were so many of us lads who fell in love with Annie in the mid 70's
