part of the experience of going to see f1 is the sound of those beautiful engines.its like no other.i went to silverstone and people all around me had earplugs/headsets.why!i want my ears to bleed from this experience.no way am i going to a race and not hear every note of the engines!
I'm sure there is a thrill in watching this and listening to the beautiful f1 car sounds... but i think its pointles to go there and just look at the cars go by.. I'd rather watch it at home. in the quiet, and look at the cars from like 1000 different angles.
Live television really hinders the sound that these restricted 2.4L V8s do actually create. It is mind boggling that an engine that small (compared to an 8.0L/8.4L NASCAR engine let's say) can create such loud noise!
coming through the corner at shit-your-pants speed.
and to the tough guys who think you should go without any ear protection--go fuck off. if people want to protect their hearing then let them be. i don't wear hearing protection but i don't discriminate against those who do. the sound experience can be had without putting yourself through pain.
If you want to damage your hearing you go right ahead! It's not exactly a measure of a man if you wear ear protection or not... Whichever way you look at it, the level of noise IS damaging to you hearing. I always have a quiet chuckle to myself at GP's about the people with no ear protection thinking they're the business, I guess you're one of those people :P
@MattMPG After many years F1 lay-off, I attended 2000 US GP. Sitting in stands which have ampitheater-like sound-amplifying effect, I think I might have permanently damaged my hearing.
The car going past at 2:00 couldn't capture the REAL noise you get at a Grand Prix better. I remember being at Silverstone for the first time and there were all these different tones and noises the telly just doesn't capture! That distinctive 'pop' on gear change is rarely heard on any video I've seen on here so good job :)
loudest noise I've ever heard. Hands down. Yes you very much need protection especially if your standing in an area where theyre going full tilt. Braking zones arent as bad because the car's idle noise is loud, but not deafening.
He's right.... I seriously damaged my hearing by not wearing earplugs at the Canadian GP. It felt louder than a gunshot to be honest... I'd still do it again though.
@clubkid43 i remember going to a formula 3 race couldnt hear properly for about two weeks after cus i was basically sitting on the side rail thing on the main straight
Over 120DbA if you're seated aways away. 130 or more from about 20 feet. If you're close enough to touch the car and it revs and even snifs the rev limiter, you're going to end up with tinnitus.
@clubkid43 Ive never been to an F1 race either, now they got those v8's which still sound cool but not as cool as the v10's and the v12's. I did go see the BOSS GP(Big Open Single Seaters) which has F1 cars in it. I was on the main stand on the straight. Nothing can prepare you for that sound, seriously.
@clubkid43 I know it's a year late, but I thought I should answer your question. F1 is extraordinarily loud. It rattles your chest. You can hear the cars for miles. If you have half an inclination toward cars or going fast, it will change your life. Check out NHRA top fuel as well--very different attitude, 8000 horsepower out of a V8 engine is nothing to be trifled with.
@clubkid43 i was near the bottom of hanger straight silverstone. Ear piercing noise at 190mph. I had no ear protection, but at least i can tell people how i went deaf! LOL
Great sounds, but never as good as they sounded in the early 90´s, with the v-10 and the v-12, bigger engines. Now all of the cars sound the same, the dont scream as they used to.
"Turn up your speakers for the ear piercing effect." I think he means the "Hey...my tweeters aren't working anymore. And where does that smoke come from...?"-effect.......
I can tell you guys something...the footage at about 1:36, when I shot that...OMG words and video cannot do that justice. You are only an arms length away from the fence which is inches from the cars as they come at you. It shakes your insides with an indescribably force.
@Riffer87 that was super zoomed in, you cannot get within 20 ft of the fence on the front straight. But I do agree, just the sheer concussion of the sound hitting you is intense!
I was able to go to Spa in 07 and it was a beautiful experience. My videos sound just like this. And Eau Rouge isnt a hill its a damn wall! But yes I would love to see F1 back in north America. I dont see how both the US GP & Canadian GP were taken off the calender. I hear that Canada will be back but to be honest I think the US needs a decent supertrack. Indy is too old, too out of date & technically dull.
Viewership on Speed Channel is up a few percent because of the championship battle. Otherwise, ratings are in the dumps. The Canadian GP still pulls a ton of people in during the weekend. Quite a few are European transplants or Americans who actually know what proper open wheel racing is.
Actually no. The cars are running so much down force that the drag prevents speeds in excess of 210 to 215 mph on the straight @ Indianapolis. But if you strip it down like a champ or Indy car they could hit upwards of 250 to 260. The old BAR team proved that down in the Salt flats. HOWEVER the lap times would be slower as they cars would struggle terribly in the infield.
Yeah the old BAR did but the aero dynamic improvements since then could very well overcome the loss in hp. But with the new regs for 09...who knows anymore.
That BAR that did the run in the salt flats did it without a rear wing too though! It hit like 258MPH or something like that! They were supposed to build a different wing for it and try again cause they thought they could go faster! The rear wheels were spinning most of the way down so they wanted to get just a little downforce on it!
it feels interesting. These cars in particular are louder then anything(other cars anyway) on earth as far as decibels so it kind of vibrates your insides and gives you a MASSIVE HEADACHE if you dont have muffs on.
I have been able to get to see one race live(Silverstone) and that sound almost make it worth to see them not to even talk how wierd it looks them going those corners it's out of this owrld =)
Seriously, I think all races should be filmed like this! You get a much better impression of the speed than you do on regular TV coverage. When you see it like this, you realize those guys aren't out there just pissing around!
Of course it cant. Ive been to a few NASCAR races. Sound wise, it cant even begin to match F1. You can watch NASCAR without earmuffs and tolerate it. F1, is almost unbearable to do so...

3.5L V12s r the best!!!
V10s r gr8 2 and even 3.5L mosquito V8s are way better than those puny 2.4L.
Heck today's F1s r not as mean as the V6 turbos.
