Beast Man has control over all beasts. So when Man-E-Faces switched to his Beast face he became under Beast Man's spell. However, initially Man-E-Faces was intended to be an evil Warrior. Very early packaging he is presented as evil. So, yes you are kind of right. In an old school purist kind of way.
