A warrant for disorderly conduct? What a waist of man power and police resources. Don't you interrupt the peace more by serving the warrant? If it didn't require an immediate arrest how disorderly could it have been? Did the police fail to do their job at the time or did they just want to learn who the protesters would be so the could arrest them later without cameras and witnesses. Really, it's about educatinga populace. I can't stress more strongly that maintaining the moral highground (not just in one's mind, but in real tangible ways) is job one. Everything else flows from that and if you gain it and then squander it, a just movement will set itself back, the degree to which depends on the level of the misdeed, often years, in any case. You need to think about using "medical" marijuana as a platform in an incremental strategy for ultimate, full-scale, legalization

Oakland, I might add, is set to enact (its leading in the polls) a proposition to legalize marijuana for everyone (not just "medical" users, as is the case, state-wide, now). What's rather remarkable about this is that Oakland, the East Bay, and the Bay Area, in general, has not escaped the police-state "mentality" which has afflicted law enforcement nation wide. There is an obvious disconnect between "the people" and "the police-state".

The reason we have been able to overcome this "disconnect" is two-fold, imo. One, our local legislators, in general, reflect the will of the people. Lesson: electing people who are sympathetic is crucial. Two, there has been an organized effort by activists, about 20 years, which has finally borne fruit. Lesson: activists must be organized (and unified) they must use an incremental strategy. If well articulated, the people (voters), after a time, will come to empathy and understanding.

In 1980, I was 16, and during this period of time ('80s), I smoked joints very casually just walking down the streets, because I felt no shame about it. Even though this was Berkeley, I still got looks from people, who obviously thought my activity was "radical", that I should hide it and act ashamed. Since then, Berkeley has not avoided the "police-state" mentality that has gripped the nation, but back then, they were cool people. We've gone backwards (big-time), as a nation.
