Okay, this might be a noob question, but I never played live poker in a real casino.

How can dealers and and other players see how much someone exactly bets just by pushing a huge stack of chips in the middle without even counting them and without saying a word?

Is that just a matter of experience and a schooled eye?

No problem, I'll be glad to answer.

For the most part, players and dealers dont know EXACTLY how many chips a player puts in instantly into the middle, and so what the dealer will do is break down the stack into columns of 4 or 5, counting as he/she goes, and will announce the bet to the potential callers afterwords. A lot of the times, the player will even break down the bet into mini stacks as the bet crosses the line. Only rarely can the bet be assessed before it breaks down.

Some players can usually group up the chips (by their side markings) and count them real fast in our heads before its broken down, but its usually up to a point, maybe 20-30. hope this helps.

Some tables have 'bet lines'. If you move your chips across the line it's a bet. However, the tables from the WSOP don't. If you then move your chips forward, it's called 'forward motion' and it should count as a bet. This because if you move your chips forward you can check on your opponents reaction. Since that russian guy losev obviously put his chips forward, it was forward motion and the ruling was indeed very poor.

They are both correct just as the announcers had said. That is forward motion. Let me repeat: that is forward motion. You go into any casino in the ENTIRE world and THAT is forward motion. What is forward motion? Moving an x amount of chips either past the betting line. If there is no betting line then past your cards. That is a universal ruling in any casino. That bet should have stayed. The ruling was idiotic to say the least.

Given the video evidence, it's not even close between a good and bad ruling; it's clearly horrific. There is no physical barrier (including the button) that determines whether or not a bet has been made, it's simply forward motion. There are grey areas i.e. moving chips from the back of your stack to the front. But this isn't a grey area, it's black and white.

That's the right ruling because the chips never stopped motion and it was behind the button the whole time. It's the equivalent of moving chips to the side and counting out your chips.
