Ringo and Davy Jones appeared on the same show long before this commercial. Davy was in a group of kids from the show "Oliver" that performed on the same Ed Sullivan show as the Beatles' first appearance.
The commercial made me want a large hot sausage calzone with Recotta cheese from my favorite pizza shop. And, of course, to listen to Beatles and Monkees records.
Some people may have been offended? Lennon has been dead for nearly 30 years and this commercial makes no mention of him (although his participation in a reunion would be implied). For goodness sakes! What hyper-sensitive morons would be offended by a little joke?
This wasn't banned, it came out around the time of the Anthology, Ringo's always done ads, just never in the UK (until the Norwich Union very recently). They're all dreadful though. Every one last one.
C'mon Lennonmania, an alchololic in Switzerland? He just had a tour last year with his newest album, toured with the All Star band this past summer. What are you a fan or just trying to be cynical? At his age, he doesn't need to prove a thing to anyone anymore. Just look at what happened when he was to appear on Regis live last year.
He still jams and enjoys playing. If he didnt watch his health, he wouldn't have lived this long.
@EternalSilverFlame I hope not. I thought he was recovering. He talked of being drunk most of his life, even as child, because liquor was part of his family's lifestyle. He said he was probably drunk most of the time with The Beatles, but he'd started a recovery program in the 70s.
Actually I was trying to make a joke there - I'm fairly certain that there are no laws in England to prevent one from comparing the Monkees to the Beatles! And yes, there is no comparison, but lets not slight the Monkees too much: as a musical act they are very underrated. Not in the Beatles' class, but they did make some of the best American pop-rock hits of the time.

They did write some of their own songs. Their careers as Monkees may have ended, but they're still doing great on their own.
