The only memorable moment i have of play school was when John was singing the 5 little monkeys song, holding up his hand to the camera.. he got down to the last monkey and was flipping off australia.
@BenjaminLang21100 Yesss! I remember that haha. I was trying to find the episode where they made a cardboard playground for the toys and then John went down the slide and broke it. Far out John was the best hahaha :) :)
I always loved Monica, I remember this song!! I met Monica only 2 days ago at the Mardi Gras in Sydney. She was really nice and friendly. Just how I remember her from my childhood.
@rlbluver I'm pretty sure it's just fa la la la, bambino! Which is Italian for child, I'm not sure about the other part but its probably also Italian?
Unfortunately I don't have any full episodes so I wouldn't be able to do that. The only tape with a full episode was wiped about 10 years ago.
These Play School clips that I've uploaded just have the last 1-6 minutes of each episode because that's all that was recorded. An older sibling recorded them back in 1992 when recording episodes of Babar, which immediately followed Play School back then.
(sorry if i keep asking questions but i'm just interested to know what I missed).
I read on Wikipedia something about a clock with a twisty dial thing at the top. What did it look like and how did it utilise the prop related to the story. Also, i'm interested, if they didn't have theharp music, what music did they have to intro the windows.
Well the clock with the twisty dial didn't last for very long after the revamp. After looking at the time, a presenter would turn a winder around which is on top of the clock prop, then the surprise that relates to the story would come down a slippery slide from behind the clock face.
That was replaced by the "Hickory Dickory Clock" where a mechanical cat and mouse runs around the clock face anti-clockwise while the house pianist plays "Hickory Dickory Dock" then the cat stops and the mouse gets away. While the camera aims down before revealing the surprise at the bottom of the clock, it shows a stuffed toy mouse coming out from out from behind doors which is supposed to be the same mouse that got away from the cat.
As for the windows, the music they use now is some kind of mind stimulating orchestral music. It's hard to describe it since there are multiple instruments used, but the new music was made to suit the new rotating prop system as it spins around because the harp music wouldn't suit it.
they didn't really change, the arched window got smaller and the round window moved a bit more into the centre. I believe that the harp music used to open the windows is also slightly different for the last few years until 1999. BTW, I lived in the USA for the last 10 years, I heard that they made some significant changes to playschool including the windows in some sort of rotating prop thing. Did they still have the harp music for the windows and did they still have the rocket clock?
The Play School today is a completely different show to what it was before 2000. There is no rocket or flower clock anymore nor is there any harp music on the intro to the windows segment, the format is the same but everything from look and feel is different. The first time I saw the first revamped episode I was very disappointed because next to nothing was carried over, the theme, set, sounds, props & presenters were all different. It feels like a completely different show to when I watched it.
I have just found the Playschool Orchestra DVD and Everybody Sings videos in my collection and I will try and upload them as soon as possible. For those who are wondering, they have the windows in the smaller version (mid to late 90 versions). 2 trips through the round window and one trip through the arched window, and an appearance by the flower clock. I will try and upload them as soon as I can.
BTW, does anyone have any clips of the Rocket Clock because I am desperately looking for some

are the babies manikins or dummies because that is what it looks like to me
rlbluver 1 year ago
@rlbluver Correct. They are dummies that they made out of stockings and pillow for that week because this was babies week on Play School.

Wow, that's quite a find there. I didn't know that the windows props changed in the mid '90s and I would love to see the flower clock again too.
