And yes - the colors are washed out ONLY IN THESE YOUTUBE VIDEOS - I saw the 30-minute documentary showing the remastering process - the colors are not so washed out, and the picture is million times sharper. But one of the best things in Remastered is the ship movement - remember how the Enterprise was "strafing" a bit left and right in the original version? Hehehe...
Original version, Remastered version - it's all the same. Same story, same characters. The Remastered version does NOT tell the different things, it just makes them look more cool.
I like the original space scenes better than the remastered... I don't care for the cgi enterprise. Reminds me of that veggie tales crap that used to be on tv. Also, I prefer extremely clear days with not a cloud to be found ANYWHERE on my Class M planets.
A lot of it has to do with the colour that's being captured/transmitted by the broadcaster. The DVD's look much better, but at the time, people just wanted to see the updated shots.
Yes, but we have to consider that the original shots also suffered the effects of this broadcasting. I imagine that playing the actual DVDs side-by-side would still have the original version look best.
Original color timing looks a hell of a lot better than the remastered version. They go through the trouble of redoing the VFX but screw up the color on the live action material... jeeeeezeuss..
well actually they brought the colours in-line with what todays tvs and colour scope reproduction. the colors of the old shows in TECHNICOLOR were off and were pale or overblown. Now with that said, the original is what we all grew up with so there is some nostalgia that we miss, but if you have the orig on DVD and watch a side by side on your new flatscreen tv the old show does not look as god as it did on a CRT screen, difference in the resolution. some new effects are better, like planets
nebulas are better to, the ship is pretty good, i like the orig but thats nostalgia. some scenes look normal now and not so TECHNICOLOR they now have a normal color pallet. but im sure in 20 or 30 years trek of today will look odd,
I'd rather have the originals. In my opinion, there should be two versions on the dvds, original and remastered.
It almost seems like when they remaster anything, they TRY to make it look old.
The colors were much more vibrant in the original series, and I'd rather take the original cheesy but loveable side effects than outdated, semi-realistic CGI.
Funny thing is, original or enhanced, the FX look equally fake. The original FX looked like phony optical FX. The enhanced FX look like phony digital FX. Not sure what the point was, really. I guess to make the FX look "21st Century fake," rather than "late '60s fake?"
S'okay...I'll still watch 'em, either way. I just find it funny that they replaced fake-looking optical FX with equally fake-looking CGI, and consider it an improvement.
Their intent wasn't to update or bring it into the 21st century. They wanted to "improve" the effects while honouring the original series and without taking away the cheesy effects that made TOS loveable.
If that was their intent, then they failed. If their intent was to bring it into the 21st Century, then I would say they succeeded, because that's all they succeeded in doing. It's no "improvement" to trade in one batch of phony-looking FX for another. It's only an update...replacing outdated hokey FX with state-of-the-art hokey FX. That's an update...not an improvement. So if their intent was, as you say, to "improve," they've failed. If it was to update, they've succeeded.
I don't mind the remastering, but in some aspects, I can't see why they redid some shots...like Enterprise orbiting the planet. It was almost the same shot.
But the end shot, I can see that it's a nice difference.
I think both versions are valid and equally well done.
Still, I wish the new stuff had the vibrancy of the original technocolour, but remeber that in 1966 it was pure film whereas now in 2009, it's 1966 film rendered through a computer and then re-installed.
I don't like the remastered ones, the ship looks silver and the colors are not as vibrant. i bought the original series on DVD and it has been cleaned up very nice and there is even some extra footage in some episodes.
There's absolutely no justification for retouching something classic. It is the same as someone repainting details on the Monalisa.
The visual effects reflect the time and the conditions in which they were made. Indeed, they were part of the reason why ST became a classic. They made something memmorable with low budget and short schedule.
This new version bad mouth the original.
And by the way, that wash out color is awful. What was the point in fading out the vibrant original colors?
oalternativo....I was there, September 8th, 1966 watching, "The Man Trap". Yes, I have been a fan since then. I have no problem with this re-mastering...why do you?
Hi. You can (and so can I) enjoy this re-mastering as being something other than the original classic. You have to consider that the original series is not only the result of Roddenberry's and the cast's gifts. But also of the crew and technicians envolved. Their solutions became part of the final work. They too deserve the credit for what ST became. How can someone simply erase their work? I think that you can't retouch a masterpiece.
And as for the colors, I really prefer the original ones.
I certainly respect your opinion (all Trekers are respectful of different points-of-view). I must say that I enjoy the re-mastering--the crew and technicians did their best for the tools at the time (mid/late 60's); however, I am happy with the update. (You must admit, I am certainly one of the more senior Trekers!)
And please, don't get me wrong. I am not saying that Okuda's work in this re-mastering is not good. It is. All I am saying is that it should be seen as a bonus. Something like "well, now that you know the original, look what we did for your delight".
I must share...of the original 79 episodes...I doubt there are many I have seen less that in 3 digits! (over 100 times.) I used to recite the characters' lines before they said them! I laugh at Star Trek trivia games since I generally know more than the authors. Oh no! Am I a nerd?
As for your fan made comment, it just goes to show you that we now have the technology in our own homes to do production quality special effects that couldn't even be achieved in a movie studio 40 years ago. I think overall the effects are much better, but there are some changed they made that don't stay true to the original...
Original all the way because the remastered version looks fuzzy and crappy and for some reason, whenever they try to over remaster something, it looks and sounds like crud.
I shelled out the bucks for the 3 series of Star trek on DVD and didnt realise that I had bought a re-mastered version. I was soooooo depressed when I realised my mistake. I like the old funky effects. I really wanted a box set of the original shows unadulterated. I didn't understand what re-mastered was at first. I thought they just enhanced the colour or something, not got in there with puters and remade half of it.
I'd be willing to bet you can get the originals on Amazon or Ebay.
Personally I dig the re-mastered ones ... planets look great and Enterprise looks really boss, except a little too clean maybe. Only drawback for me is Spock's ears -- line of demarcation. ; (
I've been watching my dvd's for a while now and am used to all the re-done stuff. There are some merits to the up-dating I spose. I do miss the funky old vision though and hope to buy it in the future. I noticed the line on Spock's ear at times too. Some times they got it right, other days the ears just didn't sit right.
Can't be an easy job regards making those ears though.
Youtube quality, even in HQ mode, doesn't do the comparison justice. There's a negligible difference here - the original version actually seems to have a little more depth to me on this particular example. When I viewed a remastered episode on TV a little while ago, I really saw a world of difference. Details are sharper and cleaner, colors and tones are more accurate looking. However, I still think the CGI models needed a lot of work. The old-school models always look more real to me.
I still like the oled effects better since it was part of the charm with those episodes like the Godzilla movies. But I love the fact that people love TOS so much they took the time to do this.
I like this and the remaster starwars. This is the type of remake I want to see. Just better production values and that's it. You still have to praise what this does. It protects it from the snobs all along.
Story is not post-production quality nor change to improve, period.
StarWars remastered's only problem was that nac to add and change the few things, like Han Solo not firing first or the sinking on 3 in Jaba's layre.
The only other problem would be the quality of the CG, Jurassic Park or it dies. JP was the only film to make people in my class at the time think it was an animatronic robot when T-rex walked infront of the car or when the raptors jump on the counter.
I found that not even JP 2 and 3 compares in realism.
The color on the remaster is all messed up. Can't compete with the studios on that but at least it should not have degraded. Also, interpretation. The ending is better with the ship moving off into the distance. Spockboy takes it out so he can show off his neat explosion. You can't beat the original directors either.
The skin tone and lighting is actually a lot better in the original - Bones looks positively grey in the remastered when they're compared. Apart from the improved backgrounds for the ships (like the planets and the addition of a sun where appropriate) I prefer the original.
The special effects on TOS sucked hard. It was a low budget sci-fi show. Compare the effects to the effects of 2001 A Space Odessey and you'll see a HUGE difference. And TOS had funny sets, but not appropriate.
Interesting that the -rubber neck- segue of the Enterprise leaving the doomed star system works better than the remastered, lingering dolly into close-up. Very TMP, I wonder how they resisted the temptation to cut in some -ooh ah- shots.
The remastered looks great, albeit the colors are not as vibrant (something that can be easily fixed). Looking forward to picking these up in HD in May!
i must say i loike the original muxh better then the remasterd so the new one is cool to watch but im greatful that the space channel plays the original
I have a geeky comment. Why are the warp engines engage in orbit. I liked it better with no activity showing - more realistic. I guess we could assume that they are started but "idling"... :)
If you mean the glowing nacelle lights, they were always engaged - in every shot of the production model that is ;-)
Any TOS shot that did not show them blinking and their "rotors" spinning was from footage from one of the pilots that the Trek team would splice in where needed (same goes for the "ever changing" rears of the warp engines. (1) blocks, (2) holes, (3) ball (in no particular order)).
Some of those originals looked brighter and more colourful - Although I will conceede that 1 or 2 scenes of the remastered were better but overall - "If it ain't broke don't fix it".
Unfortunately the Youtube compression ratio ruins most of the benefit in the remastered versions. They look MUCH better watching it on good resolution TV.
I much prefer the original visuals. The scene wit hthe Enterprise orbiting the planet with planet soft focus with the deep rich colors is MUCH more pleasing than a perfectly focused planet with atmostphere etc....That shot as a Re-Master takes every little bit of magic completely away.
Indeed it is - and I love the way they would play with the apparent speeds with the camera motions they would use. It was genius (and sadly something not yet recaptured by CBS-D in their best efforts).
For instance, (first scene) the planet seemingly moving towards the Enterprise - the Enterprise slowly gaining distance from the camera, or (entering orbit) the ship zooming by the camera and settling into a serene orbit - which shows both the immensity of the ship, & how tiny it is in space.
I MUCH prefer the original ending when Beta Niobe went Super Nova!!!
What in blue blazes were the cgi cartoon freaks "animators" doing at cbs/paramount with hack effects that in retrospect make the 1969 effects look and still hold up better !?!?
yea whats with the old one being in better color?? I want to have all the remastered ones but not if they're fubar'd. Just like SW special ed. some thing shouldn't be messed with!
I prefer the color of the original. And the text looked better with the shadow. Sometimes the ship looked better in the original, but of course the planet looks far better in the remastered version, and the nova looked a zillion times better.
These side by side comparisons make the remastered versions look washed out with less contrast and dull colors. In opening scene of "And the Children Shall Lead", the remastered version displays the rating and closed caption symbols, so the remastered version is taken from a BROADCAST and NOT directly from the HD/DVD. This may have something to do with the apparent poor quality of the remastered versions. The comparisons on the actual HD/DVD discs show the remastered scenes to look much better!
You know I am getting it tomorrow and I can't wait to have it remastered in HD. For those nitpickers and leave types they do sell it on remastered. For me I want Star Trek with 21st century effects.
The opening shot isn't even in keeping with how motion shots over models looked back then. And the rest of the shots just change the color balance. I'm not impressed.
Not to mention...in the original, the planet Sapeden was vaporized and is not shown clearly in the "enhanced version". Frankly, these "enhancements" are the same as adding a few scratches to a dead Confederate soldier in the Tara scene in GWTW. Instead of this, why cannot writers just write something decent nowadays? Good luck on that.
I love the CGI improvments but the overly unrealistic colors of the original series is one of the things I love about it. I wish they did not wash them out. The show is a fantasy and the original colors help keep it alive. My thoughts anyway.
The original nova is infinitely better looking and suits the "sailing off into (or rather away from) the sunset" feel much better. The sun actually looks hot and bright, where the CGI version looks like cold cotton candy.
What the heck is up with the poor color in the remastered reel? Yuck! Sure, pretty neat new special effects, but the color looks washed. Even the credit text is pale.
I'm really learning to hate this remastered nonsense. I mean hell.. why didn't they use Massive to create a REAL Klingon invasion team in "Errand of Mercy"? Hehe.
This was a bad editing job on the part of the remastering team. If you watch the original, there is a nice harp swell just as the Enterprise passes, which is rendered useless in the remake. Unfortunate.
the originals have much better colour and image quality, the remasters have better effects. the remasters are all toned down colour wise, looks crap

I love Star Trek...and the remastered is very nice and all, but, I don't know...I just like the old better...
The Nova at the end was better...but, it takes away from what you remember when you first saw star trek, if you know what I am saying.
So, overall, the remastered is in fact "better" but it takes away from the "home" feeling of TOS.

the remastered planets are soulless, the originals beautiful.

yea whats with the old one being in better color?? I want to have all the remastered ones but not if they're fubar'd. Just like SW special ed. some thing shouldn't be messed with!

The 'original' was the previous film restoration, which oversaturated the colors.
The re-remastered edition has more reaslistic color levels, but it is lacking that 'punch'.

The old one is better

They've managed to make the 60s look drab.

Sorry. But I aways loved the 'going nova" effect at the end in the original.

Is the ship at warp in that final scene?
I thought stars going nova caused a level 12 shock wave (Generations), so they really should be warping away from that star

Both look good in their own light.

Exactly, updated effect ftw.

The opening shot isn't even in keeping with how motion shots over models looked back then. And the rest of the shots just change the color balance. I'm not impressed.

watch this on hd dvd, you be blown away,

Not to mention...in the original, the planet Sapeden was vaporized and is not shown clearly in the "enhanced version". Frankly, these "enhancements" are the same as adding a few scratches to a dead Confederate soldier in the Tara scene in GWTW. Instead of this, why cannot writers just write something decent nowadays? Good luck on that.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
What happens when you remaster a nerd?

the original super nova effect is a hell of a lot better than the sso called "improved cgi" one!!!
cathytreks 4 years ago
The remastered looks greened and faded in this video you did.

seems like such a good idea to update the effects .. yet...?

I couldn't see the difference in the viewing disks. what was it?
eagle219406 4 years ago 4
I love the CGI improvments but the overly unrealistic colors of the original series is one of the things I love about it. I wish they did not wash them out. The show is a fantasy and the original colors help keep it alive. My thoughts anyway.
Skelch2 4 years ago 4
The original nova is infinitely better looking and suits the "sailing off into (or rather away from) the sunset" feel much better. The sun actually looks hot and bright, where the CGI version looks like cold cotton candy.
spideyhaswebshooters 4 years ago
You are an idiot. The remastered version is far better than that tourch light effect.
Jogeta5 3 years ago
What the heck is up with the poor color in the remastered reel? Yuck! Sure, pretty neat new special effects, but the color looks washed. Even the credit text is pale.
jengersnap 4 years ago
The reason the remastered has poor color is because it was taken from a TV broadcast while the original was taken from a DVD.
eagle219406 4 years ago
I simply loved the nova effect.
bladecutter25 4 years ago 2
Is it me or the color in the original are much more beautiful than in the remastered.
Spockthedragon 4 years ago
The original has much better color.
pooeyegg 4 years ago
yeah, wha's up with that? The color, the beam effects. I like the ship better though.

I'm really learning to hate this remastered nonsense. I mean hell.. why didn't they use Massive to create a REAL Klingon invasion team in "Errand of Mercy"? Hehe.
Zebonka 4 years ago
This was a bad editing job on the part of the remastering team. If you watch the original, there is a nice harp swell just as the Enterprise passes, which is rendered useless in the remake. Unfortunate.
