I gotta get to Strasburg. keep hearin about it. would love to see steam engines in real life. dont get the full effect from watchin a 80 year old black and white movie lol.
that would be an awesome sight for the Amtrack rider to see an old steam engine pushing a snow plow! ive been on this line many times i have gone the past few summers and i love it every time i go there
Dear paul8246: Steam power WAAS limited in speed by the available valve gears. They couldn't admit and exhaust steam fast enough to prevent increasing back pressure as piston speeds increased. Poppet valves, one of the solutions tried, proved to be too fragile for railroad work in the U.S. Another practical limitation was caused by the dynamic augment of the reciprocating masses of main and side rods, valve gear and counterweights. The Diesel speed record is much higher than steam.
@Sp33dyD3m0n - What's coming out of the stack is only water vapor, not smoke. And unlike diesels that have a fixed horsepower and torque rating, a good fireman and engineer can eek an immense amount of power out of a steam locomotive. They're like people in the sense that I might be able to get more out of you than somebody else. I guarantee you that #475 has more power to give than the diesel that Strasburg owns and is ideal for this job.
WOW! What a thrill! Until today, I've only seen still photos of steamers plowing snow. This was an event NOT to be missed! Wish I'd been there in person to see the action! Thank you so much for posting this video of real live RR snowplowing excitement! Fantastic, and saved to favorites!
I absolutely MUST visit Strasburg some day! Gotta visit the on-line site NEXT! :-)
@428trapay I think the plow portion of the car is at least 10 feet tall. I've seen the one at the Henry Ford that was just like this used by Canadian Pacific there, and the plow is huge!
Great Video. The plow hitting those deep drifts was fantastic. The fine folks at Strasburg Railroad know how to run a railroad and how great the equipment looked as well. Top Score 100% !
Oh my goddess, I LOVE the sounds of a steamer chugging away pushing that plow. It slowed way down in that deep drift almost to the point were i though they would have to stop and go again. But the powerfuly steamer just kept pushing that plow and cleaning that line. I JUST Wished that they would bring back the steamers here on the main lines of USA. I'm tired of the lifeless Diesel after all they have die in the name and I think they should die. BRING BACK THE AGE OF STEAM!
Actually there is a Euro company that builds steam engines that create steam using diesel fuel :-P The reason is because of emission norms, a steam generated by the burning creates less NOx and comparable SOx emissions than a diesel of the same power rating. And the engine is much lighter too, due to the way its built.
Thank god someone is shooting video. I thought I was the last one on the planet to shoot trains with HI Def video. Great job. That is one awesome engine!
That was spectacular! Seeing you using your steam engine and old plows the way they were designed is heart warming. Our old rail museum is slowly rusting away as the lines and trestles are pulled up or deemed unsafe. We have an old spreader / flange that was built in michigan, along with a similar plow, but they haven't moved in inch in almost thirty years.
@grnggrmn where is your museum located?... i'm a member of a narrowguage op in nj, however alot of our members have connections at other facilities... to bad this equipment cannot be donated or sold to another operation to help save it?
@grnggrmn i'm a part of a narrow guage op in nj, i know the work involved in prez work... but why not donate or try and sell the equipment. wilmington and western in DE has a wonderful setup (when time permits i will join, but right now full time job plus one railroad is enough heh) I just hate to see alot of these things rust away.. when someone else could have the means to restore it... before yu know it what was sitting on the rip track is to far gone...
WOW, here in Newfoundland we also used push plows very simular to the one shown here and worked just well, the brute force of steam certinally shows here for sure. BTW: Do the puch plow shown here also have a flange underneath to help clear the tracks below the plow? Newfoundland push plows were equiped with these flanges as well some had flanges that would out from the side of the plow! Nice video i really got to say! 5 stars!!
@paul8246 i can rebut that. i dont care what is said, nothing is faster than a steam locomotive. a diesel engine can only go so fast because it is limited. you are unlimited with steam. as long as you can keep feeding steam to it, you can go as fast as you want. plus, steam is extremely powerful. nothing can beat the power of steam. the only reason steam went out was because of high maintenance. diesel are cheaper and easier to maintain, but steam is a better choice for both power and speed.
Wow, awesome video, Steven! Thumbs up and favorite! It really was brutal winter. 475 was really pushing hard. I thought it would take a little longer than that, though.
it amazing to watch trains go where ever they want to in the snow, and tracks will magically appear behind them.

you would think that they would knock off all that snow on the plow every once in awhile so it can slice thru drifts better.

How do you find out about odd little events, such as freight runs or plowing the line on the Strasburg.

@lightningbolt543 I'd hate to be the one to inform you of this. But the black stuff is smoke, which is produced from burning coal.
