  • it amazing to watch trains go where ever they want to in the snow, and tracks will magically appear behind them.

  • every body jump in the snow

  • That's an amazing plow. Fun to see it ram through the snow.

  • "dashing through the snow"

  • the 3 dislikes must be al gore fans.

  • Brilliant Video!!

  • Words cannot describe how awesome this is!

  • 1:04 waoh

  • I did not think that they used coal burning trains any more?

  • Man, I'm not much of a train person, but I always find these steam engines to be just awesome to watch :D Great video!

  • I gotta get to Strasburg. keep hearin about it. would love to see steam engines in real life. dont get the full effect from watchin a 80 year old black and white movie lol.

  • water weighs in the neighorhood of 8.63 pd. per gal.

  • Great shots here from Newman in Indiana

  • I use to ride on the strasburg railroad when I was a kid

  • thats one sad train horn

  • Excuse me while i pick my jaw up off the floor. The shot at about 1:30 of them blowing through the snow bank was particularly spectacular.

  • the door on the metroliner cab car was completly filled in..awsome!!...and its great to see the 2-10-0 on the plow..great vid!!

  • awesome video. That second shot was amazing.

  • that would be an awesome sight for the Amtrack rider to see an old steam engine pushing a snow plow! ive been on this line many times i have gone the past few summers and i love it every time i go there

  • you would think that they would knock off all that snow on the plow every once in awhile so it can slice thru drifts better.

  • How do you find out about odd little events, such as freight runs or plowing the line on the Strasburg.

  • This had to be in February 2010. I live in York Pa. and the area had two 20"+ snowstorms in a weeks time. When did you shoot this?

  • at 3:33 you can tell he just ran he's out of breath

  • Cool!!!

  • Thats amazing ! It looked like some sort of alien vehicle coming out of nowhere !

  • well bust my boilers

  • the steam came out really black

  • @lightningbolt543 I'd hate to be the one to inform you of this. But the black stuff is smoke, which is produced from burning coal.

  • Dear paul8246: Steam power WAAS limited in speed by the available valve gears. They couldn't admit and exhaust steam fast enough to prevent increasing back pressure as piston speeds increased. Poppet valves, one of the solutions tried, proved to be too fragile for railroad work in the U.S. Another practical limitation was caused by the dynamic augment of the reciprocating masses of main and side rods, valve gear and counterweights. The Diesel speed record is much higher than steam.

  • @jppicur I think he meant that the 475 is more powerful than the diesels the Strasburg owns, which I don't doubt.

  • Now that's a great sight! Steam and a plow! Thanks for posting this. :-)

  • @deloreanman14 I was going to say the same thing. awesome to see a steam engine pushing a proper plow.

  • Really cool video! Best snowplow action scenes. Great countryside. Thank you for showing!

  • Quick question, why not take the plow and put it on a cleaner and more powerful engine?

  • @Sp33dyD3m0n - What's coming out of the stack is only water vapor, not smoke. And unlike diesels that have a fixed horsepower and torque rating, a good fireman and engineer can eek an immense amount of power out of a steam locomotive. They're like people in the sense that I might be able to get more out of you than somebody else. I guarantee you that #475 has more power to give than the diesel that Strasburg owns and is ideal for this job.

  • Excellent video.

    Very great job.

  • Cherry hill.. looks like snow

  • That was well cool! Almost as if the train was watching for cameras and stopped to 'pose'!

Anyone know if there's ever been a 'heated' snow plow on these trains?

    mrbluenun

  • Awesome! Great video!

  • WOW! What a thrill! Until today, I've only seen still photos of steamers plowing snow. This was an event NOT to be missed! Wish I'd been there in person to see the action! Thank you so much for posting this video of real live RR snowplowing excitement! Fantastic, and saved to favorites!

I absolutely MUST visit Strasburg some day! Gotta visit the on-line site NEXT! :-)

  • Probably one of the best plow Vids I have seen........

  • The Strasburg RAIL ROAD always does it the right way!

  • Very cool. Thanks for posting.

  • the plow looks big next to the cherry hill station

  • @428trapay I think the plow portion of the car is at least 10 feet tall. I've seen the one at the Henry Ford that was just like this used by Canadian Pacific there, and the plow is huge!

  • @428trapay every thing looks big next to cherry hill station.

  • ''Back to the Future VI'' ;)

  • Great Video. The plow hitting those deep drifts was fantastic. The fine folks at Strasburg Railroad know how to run a railroad and how great the equipment looked as well. Top Score 100% !

  • Oh my goddess, I LOVE the sounds of a steamer chugging away pushing that plow. It slowed way down in that deep drift almost to the point were i though they would have to stop and go again. But the powerfuly steamer just kept pushing that plow and cleaning that line. I JUST Wished that they would bring back the steamers here on the main lines of USA. I'm tired of the lifeless Diesel after all they have die in the name and I think they should die. BRING BACK THE AGE OF STEAM!

  • @tseter79

Actually there is a Euro company that builds steam engines that create steam using diesel fuel :-P The reason is because of emission norms, a steam generated by the burning creates less NOx and comparable SOx emissions than a diesel of the same power rating. And the engine is much lighter too, due to the way its built.

  • Wonderful. thank you for posting.

  • Thank god someone is shooting video. I thought I was the last one on the planet to shoot trains with HI Def video. Great job. That is one awesome engine!

  • Fantastic footage. Thank you for posting!

  • HOLY CRAP she didn't stall once or have any trouble at all!! AMAZING, GO 475!!! :D

  • Awesome K5LA/ steam wistle horn duel!

  • Nice indeed...

  • @Adri1430 @fabianoasc - Quite interesting! I always wondered how snow was cleared from rail tracks following particularly heavy snow falls....

  • That was spectacular! Seeing you using your steam engine and old plows the way they were designed is heart warming. Our old rail museum is slowly rusting away as the lines and trestles are pulled up or deemed unsafe. We have an old spreader / flange that was built in michigan, along with a similar plow, but they haven't moved in inch in almost thirty years.

  • @grnggrmn where is your museum located?... i'm a member of a narrowguage op in nj, however alot of our members have connections at other facilities... to bad this equipment cannot be donated or sold to another operation to help save it?

  • @grnggrmn i'm a part of a narrow guage op in nj, i know the work involved in prez work... but why not donate or try and sell the equipment. wilmington and western in DE has a wonderful setup (when time permits i will join, but right now full time job plus one railroad is enough heh) I just hate to see alot of these things rust away.. when someone else could have the means to restore it... before yu know it what was sitting on the rip track is to far gone...

  • WOW, here in Newfoundland we also used push plows very simular to the one shown here and worked just well, the brute force of steam certinally shows here for sure. BTW: Do the puch plow shown here also have a flange underneath to help clear the tracks below the plow? Newfoundland push plows were equiped with these flanges as well some had flanges that would out from the side of the plow! Nice video i really got to say! 5 stars!!

  • @radionut63 yes, this plow does indeed have an out flaring flange. as for the steam locomotive, it has more power than the diesel locomotives.

  • @wwrr98 i not agree diesel got power and speed to plow the snow you seen other video it 7 feet snow plow by diesel

  • @paul8246 i can rebut that. i dont care what is said, nothing is faster than a steam locomotive. a diesel engine can only go so fast because it is limited. you are unlimited with steam. as long as you can keep feeding steam to it, you can go as fast as you want. plus, steam is extremely powerful. nothing can beat the power of steam. the only reason steam went out was because of high maintenance. diesel are cheaper and easier to maintain, but steam is a better choice for both power and speed.

  • @radionut63 He isright but not all Russellsnowplows were equipped with flangers underneath. The oldest ones were very simple

  • Wow! That is just spectacular!

  • TOTALLY BADASS!!

  • Great video. Never saw Strasburg in the snow. Wish they had a rotary to watch!

  • Awesome catch!

  • I so wanted to be off of work for this, but it just didn't happen. Thanks for getting a great video so the rest of us can see what transpired! 5*!

  • NICE!!!!!!

  • I see they restored #475 to it's N&W Paint Job, and I also figured they would use #90 seeing as it is bigger and should be more powerful.

  • @TVRM610 90 was out for he annual inspection. It usually goes out in the winter. 475 is pretty powerful, too.

  • Wow, awesome video, Steven! Thumbs up and favorite! It really was brutal winter. 475 was really pushing hard. I thought it would take a little longer than that, though.
