  • simply beautiful, has this song on repeat all day on my iPod <3

  • Thumbs up if something in you dies in 3:22

  • Absolutely beautiful. It's like Guy Garvey's mum said, "your music makes it ok for men to cry".

  • Imagine if John Butler and Elbow played together. I know John Butler's music isn't anything like Elbow's, but John is a god at guitar. Look up 'John Butler - Ocean' if you don't believe me.

  • piece of music

  • lovely

  • You can tell at the end of this that they know they have just nailed it. A masterpiece

  • @kevc1981 i think its more about sharing in the meaning of the song, it was composed for a close of friend of the band who died he was a singer hence the line in some riot - when will my friend start singing again

  • @kevc1981 That they did, flawless

  • Someone please help a yank out: what does it mean to say that one could "Fly Around Any Corner"?

While I'm not sure what this means, I am completely sure that this song is probably one of the greatest ever. In a word: timeless. The fact it only has ~130k views is a travesty. Thanks Elbow and the BBC Orchestra for a small piece of music perfection. And thanks to everyone here who listens to them.

  • @BRow86 'Flying round the corner' is often used for moving at speed into view.

  • @BRow86 It's something i'd say if I was telling people that I met a friend unexpectedly as I walked through the city,- "I was walking down Market Street and guess who came flying round the corner??". Think it's also worth bearing in mind that angels fly and this song is about the passing of a much loved friend... it's good to know that this music touches people all over the world.

  • love this mate

  • Stunning.

  • This is an amazing song...just found out about Elbow. Can't stop listening...

  • luv u mate.

  • One dislike? Monster D:

  • Makes me cry each time I listen to this song. Memories of unloyal "friends", that only used me for a while until they got all I had to give and then just treated me like garbage....and the strange thing is....they still have a place in my heart. I must be sick

  • @catahecasa not sick. you just have a heart.

  • pink floyd and elbow…listen and have an emotional rollercoaster of a ride that is stunning and haunting.

  • simply astounding beauty made by arguably the best live act out there today!!

  • I know that it's only 1 dislike but still...

  • @TheDamiantheomen: My deepest condoleances my friend. From Canada. Keep the good memories.

  • @hansou71 cheers bud! only good memories mate, nice one.

  • A truly beautiful song sung with passion. If only we could all write such tributes to departed friends. Guy - I salute you.

  • loyalty is so important

  • There's something about the piano part at the end followed by the harp (I think) which is so brilliant - I love it.

  • @bbis001 i don't even have to be sad and the piano part breaks me heart and makes me tearful, beautifully poignant

  • so gentle shoulder charge love you mate :) says it all can never find the right words to show my appreciation for these guys.

    love you elbow !

  • a member of elbow died, the reason for this song.

  • This song has never meant as much to me as it does today. Beautiful.

  • A good friend just lost his father......he chose this song and that says it all really. Feel better T.

  • today I had to say goodbye to my Dog of 13 years, my best friend, my buddy. And I remembered this song. It captures the emotion of what I went through, as my buddy, Henry was really a friend of mine, a friend of everyone's and a friend of ours. I miss him already, he's irreplaceable. Love you, mate

  • the only thing wrong with this is @5:13

  • Just stunning.

  • Shoulder Charge!!

  • for my dad... no one made you pay... love ya mate.xx

  • One person cried so hard he couldn't find the Like button and clicked on Dislike instead

  • Music like this has the ability to do amazing things..good music has to move you in some way or another...it can make you cry , make you sing out loud, it can be the sound track to you falling in love and can be the recovery mix tape for mending a broken heart , every time i hear the hairs on the back of your neck sand up and tingle...

  • u can say, music heal'

  • haven't had a cigarette in almost 2 days, and when i listen to this i don't need one.

  • The conductors bow is very impressive !!!

  • Lovely Lyrics Before leaving get to the bar No one round here makes you pay Never very good at goodbyes So gentle shoulder charge Love you mate Love you mate Salford skyline gloom Always you Could fly round any corner But until you do Love you mate
  • A masterpiece

  • It must be so difficult for Guy to sing this song...I lost a friend so young and it tears me up just listening to him sing it as my friend always said 'love you fella' when we 'd both had a few sherberts !.... a fitting tribute to our true friends who we should tell more often that they brighten up our lives ,and that we will always love them !

  • Absolutely brilliant. I'm speechless.

  • Definitely the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard. Bryan Glancy must have been very special indeed to have something so perfect written in his honour.

  • The silence at the end says it all...perfection

  • Beautiful..Mark Potters guitar playing at the beginning and end of the song could almost reduce me to tears..

    Magnificent..

  • oh my crying god

  • You can see the pain in Garvey's face and hear it in his voice. A heart-felt tribute to a friend who died too young.

  • Let's just assume that 1 dislike was an accident shall we =D

  • Honestly this is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Period.

  • Monumental in every way, and in other ways I just can't explain...

  • love you mate

  • Before leaving get to the bar No one round here makes you pay Never very good at goodbyes So gentle shoulder charge Love you mate Love you mate Salford skyline gloom Always you Could fly round any corner But until you do Love you mate
  • of the whole song, when he sings love you mate...amazing

  • perfection

  • My brother Joe read out these beautiful lyrics at my other brother's funeral (Richard Scarsbrook) who died on 30th March 2010: a real Salford lad who could fly round any corner. Made everyone in the church cry.

  • @jscazzer My God - RIP Richard, that touched me mate - Whitefield lad meself and ADORE this song/band....

  • This is ELBOWs most gorgeous song, both in poetic lyrics and calming composition, and when I listen to this, I feel the same as when I hear Miles Davis “Blue in Green” from “A Kind of Blue”, that is I feel that everything is going to be OK. On an equally upper emotional note when I’m driving and listening to “Leaders of the free world” I change the lyrics of “Forget Myself” from “falling in love with every second song” to “falling in love with every f#@king song”.

  • Guy, for my best mate Tango. 25/02/09 x thank you

  • Amazing!!!! and brilliant!!!!

  • well said jonny pal.i love it..

  • This is brilliant.

  • The more I listen to this song, the more I realize that almost nobody has contributed a song as beautiful as this one since... The Beatles. Why Elbow isn't as famous as them still eludes me.

  • Quite possibly the most beautiful and meaningful song I've ever heard. I really need to get some money so I can buy the full album. Good thing Christmas is in two days! haha

  • This song is about a friend of theirs who died... He ended all his phone calls with 'love you mate.'

  • the ending always sends shivers down my spine.

  • such a beautiful song

  • I wish all my favourite records of all time were re-recorded in this fashion

  • Best.Band.Ever.

  • i'd buy it.

  • Such an incredible arrangement. Masterpieces can indeed be perfected.

  • Such an incredible arrangement. Masterpieces can indeed be perfected.

  • You cannot beat the sound of an Orchestra......... beautiful

  • Its great to see Elbow at the top, if they keep writing quality like this, they will become one of the all time greats. Seldom Seen Kid, got to be in anybody's top 100 albums.

  • There'S still hope

  • So gentle, shoulder charge, love you mate...

  • My favourate track.

  • Amazing

  • The simplicity of the song is magical. One of my favourite songs.

  • This song is so special. And rightly so, for all the people who have actually listened to the album fully. I'm glad we've all somehow found this song because it really does mean alot and helps in someway or another. I'm also glad this has also the least amount of views or it could've suffered the same fate as "One day like this". Appreciated by all age groups also :) I'm 16 and can share the love & passion everyone else (probably older) can also have with this :)

  • @TomCampsLinney This song is quite something...and I'm 24! haha

  • @TomCampsLinney I 100% agree... and I'm 24! haha ;)

  • absolutely superb....

  • This makes me (a grown man) cry every time i hear it. The back story behind the song makes it even better. Even Guy looks like he is crying at one point.

The fact that this version has absolutely no "dislike" ratings indicates just how powerful it is. Total respect to Elbow.

  • any more songs like this?

Not like some kid singing, but real manly tears.

  • @draudn 'An Imagined Affair' makes me cry. It's beautiful. :')

  • Never very good at goodbyes. So (gentle shoulder charge). Love you mate. - Sublime lyrics. Worth buying the album just for this!

  • Same jameth2008, I don't see why people arn't allowed to say a band is better than the beatles, even though elbow clearly are. The writing is better, the quality is better and I think I'd take Mr Garvey over John or Paul any day

  • love you mate! This song and this band have soul, most artist spend a lifetime aspiring to make music with this level of resonance. Love you Elbow and long may you continue!

  • Jazfunk you need to understand the part George martin played in arranging the orchestra for the beatles. To compare the bands on that level is nonsense . The fact is they have a lot in common, both jobbing musicians until the world caught up with them. Go see elbow you will not be dissappointed.

  • This is beautiful beyond comprehension. Elbow are truly astounding and Garvey is a remarkable human being.

  • this is what happens when people try to reach perfection

  • @JONNYDANIEL no. this is what happens when people do

  • all i can say is Goose bumps!!!!!!!!

  • @jod636 i completely agree with you, this is a beautiful song, and yeah goose bumps

  • This song must surely be one of the best ever written about a friend most definitely on a par with John Martyn's classic song Solid Air. I would have bought this album for this track alone but as it happens my daughter bought if for me!

  • sheer beauty. when a man pours his heart out over such gorgeous music. it can only make the toughest of all cry!

  • love love love this song

  • can's stop listening to this song and the strings. stellar.

  • breathtaking and moving 10 out of 5 !! unbelievable!

  • i have a funeral to attend to tomorrow - my aunt joan, she was a beautiful person and i am crying. thanks for bringing tears to a hard glass eye xxxxx love ya mate

  • Yes it's funereal, but it's an honest short meaningful epitaph to a friend. IMHO, it says more than any church mass....and if we're honest with ourselves they merely reel out written text.

That song is beautiful, and it's haunting, and played and sung with as much respect and reverence as the musicians can muster.

At my age I'll be classed as an old fart now... I've waited decades for another band to emerge from Northern England to equal the great one from Liverpool...they've arrived.

  • You're actually comparing this to the Beatles? ....

  • Hello, Frankiee88 :)

The whole album is, to my ears, not only innovative...in structure, and in lyrical meter, it's well worthy of the title, "Classic Album" Whether it's listening to the original studio version, or with orchestration, and choir

I'm a huge fan of the Beatles....but credit where & when it's due. It's usually a testament of how good the music is, when you hear it being used on film/movie scores, and by the BBC. This has been the case with this album.

  • Ok, well, at least your opinion has some clear arguments, unlike most people on YouTube so kudo's :)

How-ever, I must say I don't agree. The Beatles didn't only create/write some truly epic songs, but they also were at the heart of a musical revolution which opened the doors for other amazing British acts (Queen comes to mind).

  • .. I pressed reply on accident, I wasn't finished xD

Anyway, I don't mean to say that this band doesn't create brilliant music, but I don't think they will ever come to be anywhere near as influencial as the Beatles were and are.

  • Yeah this shouldn't be compared to the Beatles - Elbow's music is far superior.

    ;)

  • I disagree

  • And you have the right to your opinion of course - I just find the Beatles dated, plain and boring - THIS is a beautiful piece of music.

  • i agree that this is beautiful but its a bit... maybe harsh to call the beatles boring. maybe youve just listened to the wrong beatles songs. try "happiness is a warm gun", "come together" and "strawberry field forever" and youll find beautiful music.

  • @twochordcool Feel free to say that you prefer Elbow, but don't say Elbow are superior, I can guarantee you that Elbow won't have the same impact on musicians as the Beatles did. And just my opinion, the Beatles' arranging is of a much higher level than these guys, I think Elbow are good, however they didn't impress me that much because they didn't do that much with a 60 piece(estimate) orchestra. If you hear the Beatles' Day in the Life you will see what I mean.

  • Sorry mate, but I don't rate the Beatles at all. Some of their songs are great, but they were successful not because of the quality of their music, but because their style of music was original and very influential for their time. Also, as with today, image played a very large part in their success.. They were perhaps the first group to break the mold in what was a very exciting time for music as a whole.

The Beatles also didn't have the commercial competition the bands of today face.

  • @jazzfunk1992 Dude the Beatles only became interesting after experimenting with drugs. They were a Boy band who sang in nursery rhymes prior to this and afterwards their solo stuff, Lennon excluded, was dire. The Stones and Hendrix were superior.

  • @jazzfunk1992 You say that Elbow didn't make as much impact as the Beatles... I like the Beatles a lot, but they haven't made as much of an impact in my life as Elbow. Surely I'm not the only person to think this. And yes, I'd describe myself as a musician.

  • The 6 seconds of silence between when he stops singing and the applause say more than a thousand words could ever say.

    Simply beautiful.

  • i completely wholeheartedly agree

  • Really compelling...!!

  • That piano line at the end makes it for me

  • i am crying.

  • Love ya, mate.

  • I can't stop listening to this song ever since I found it - straight to among my all time favorites!

  • This reminds me of my best mate, Daz P.

    I miss him a lot.

    To you Daz.....!

  • Ok I´m crying, I love this song and this band, I love the singer Guy I love you, You make me cry with this song and powder blue, And I love your voice.

  • Just stayed up an hour longer than i wanted to listening to the most beautiful song I've ever heard..a perfect tribute to a painful loss. xx

  • luke kelly scorn not his simplicity -another gut wrencher

  • RIP Stuart. Love you mate.

  • Waaaaaa, why can't there be more songs like this?

  • a soundtrack to your soul

  • makes me cry almost every time.

    love you, mate.

  • i know how you feel, i lost what i called family to battle and i had to play this song at his funeral i guess we all have a best mate R.I.P Jon

  • to me theres nothing more beautiful in this world than this song!

  • Comment removed

  • That was simply stunning.

  • The arrangements are stunning. Listen carefully to that piano figure at the end.. it is echoed by the same figure but then on the harp. Very subtle toch.

  • Good point on that, but I think I prefer when the euphonium first comes in.

  • Anyone from Wales going to see Elbow play in Manchester in September?? Don't want lift but to know who's going!! Seen them 3 times, just got to see them again!!!

  • I saw Elbow on Friday in Manchester.

There were some Welsh people sat behind us.

    Hm! :P

  • I absolutely adore this song. I have admired Elbow ever since I first heard them, and they have inspired me to create music in ways that I would never had considered.

This song just reinforces my view. It's purely beauitiful. There are few lines, yet the message is so blatant and powerful, and the deliverance of them is just amazing. The music is brilliant in it's own right too.

I love this version with the orchestra especially. Does anyone know where it can be downloaded from?

  • I'm not being harsh but.. if you like them so much why don't you buy it?

  • Really, Really Amazing.

  • this song is beautiful, he shows true emotion in his singing, makes it seem effortless to have such an incredible voice. i respect everything about this band, cant do anything wrong in my eyes..

  • I totally agree that Elbow cannot do anything wrong in my eyes...I don't know what it is but I am totally mesmerised by the band no matter how often I hear or see them....that is the sign of true quality music and great, great decent guys...x
