John I love this video and im a freshmen in highschool. I love discus the most out of any sport or event. I hope to watch you on The Olympics someday bro!
Man this is an awesome video. I just started track this year and hoping to do some sprinting events, until I pulled my Quad. Coach recommended discus, since I was tall, and had a good upper body. At first I thought it was the stupidest sport, until i learned the techniques, and saw how skilled this could be. In the 2 week of practice, I was easily matching the Seniors, while I was still throwing standing, and them spinning. The Lord was trying to lead me in the direction that I needed to be
im 15 and im a disc and shot thrower my pr is 82.4ft from a stand throw that was for my freshmen year i went into track thinking i was crazy it was not something i planned but as soon as i started throwing i loved it. I hope to make to to state my junior year if not this year. ive been told that my coach is ranked on of the best in the state. i need 110ft to make it to state. any advice?
heh i loved this vid, still all people i see on vids are huge, im short and not that strong but i have a good technique im still loking for a training that improves my strenght but not muscular volume
when i was 15, I got 5th in my country - without a coach, 1st in my region at 17- without training. AND because i'm left handed, makes it difficult to find one..after playing semi pro rugby for couple of years ive damaged my right knee, 10 years later im wiping the dust off the discus and hope to compete at competition level. once again. my rugby career in tatters i hope to make something out of this...maybe a medal, who knows,,,,G-d willing...
@llevijr Good luck with your discus journey. Throwing the discus has changed my life for the better and I cannot think of a better way to honor God with your gifts!
I threw discus in highschool and I was ok. I never had a discus coach so I had to learn on my own. I loved discus alot back then. This might sound sad but, discus was the only thing I can remember that I trained on my own time and took the steps to try to make me a better thrower. I look back and I could of trained much harder especially with weightlifting. I'm 30 now and I'm wondering are there any good discus throwers today over 30? As you can hopefully tell John, you have inspired mew/ ur vid
@archy2frank2 I can totally relate with you in your love to throw the discus. There is something amazing about the event. To answer your question there are a lot of discus throwers that throw at a world class level who are over 30 years old. I have been told that a discus thrower does not peak until they are around 30 years old.
my dude im ah freshmen in high i play varsity football but im doin track during offseason 4 football neva threw the discuss in mt life b4 n the shot put. i came 1st 4 both. discuss i threw ah 119.7 n shot put i threw ah 40. IS THAT GUD YOU COULD GOOGLE ME IF YU WANT. SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT.
This week was the start of my track seasons and this whole week were tryouts. Im still in highschool. I already had my mind set tht i wanted to throw jav so i have been since monday. Then today i decided to fool around with the discus imitating the ppl throwing. Then i found out tht Discus is actually my real event. Bsing the throw i threw 81.1 ft and im a freshman =D and i have never done Discus in my life is tht good?
Depends. It's a start for sure. I only threw 89' in my first meet my junior year. I ended the season with 132' and then my senior year I threw 158' with a few warm-up throws over 170'. That was in two years of throwing. You never know how good you can be until you put in 110% effort for it.
hello my name is Matthew from Plainview Texas and im still High school and i can throw a disuc like 140 and my other friend he can throw 160+ i bench 295 squat 490 i will be posting videos up of me and my friends throwing discus in practice and maybe yall could help us out on what we need help on and just see the foot work. also i want to thank John Bowman ive been seeing your videos for a while now and just looking at your style of throwning and work outs ive gotten alot better. =D thanks
i jus started track and field this year and my events are shot and discus and i do a 180 spin for both and i leg press 540 and my top discus throw was 110 but i think u should train more shoulders and hips than legs
@screwinitupagain hahahaa.. lawlz... throwing is legs and hips dude. not upper body.. lawlz. only thing ur upper body does is hold the discus in ur hand... teehehehe
My brother and I have been throwing for about 8 months. We are 13 & 12, we do alot of jumping and twisting with light wieght and seen our throws improve.. Do you have any advise for us as far as improving our technique our dad says it is the most important thing we need to learn at this time. Any advise would be great
hey im 14 and throw discuss too this is my second year barelly starting i think that its all in the legs so id be doind squat or powercling to work out my legs and shit
i used to be a sprinter until late last year i started to throw discus and shot, ive had massive rapid progress but im feeling im losing alot of my former running and moving speed, are there effective ways of retaining speed without doing heavy cardio workouts which result in weight loss ....which i dont want. im averaging around 43-46m with 1kg discus 15 years
I started out as a runner to. I used to run the hurdles. Speed is produced by doing short explosive movements. To develop speed I do power lifts, sprints, and jumps. You should be able to get faster if the weight you gain is muscle.
well your trainer could be right. I did about 115 on average my freshmen year of high school and at the very end of my senior year I did 175, so yeah it's possible, I did football also and did a lot of weightlifting. I was also 6'2.5 and weighed 225 my senior year so that may have helped.
Ok, honestly 52.43 meters is really good, but not Olympic worthy. You need to throw over 60 meters to even be considered for competition at that level. If you lift that much weight, you should think about powerlifting instead.
I am in high school and i do discus also. how can i better my balance while i spin and i have the tendancy to lock my left leg and my coach tells me to switch my feet how can i fix it?
im in the eight grade and recently started disk, i seem to be having issues with the spin, whenever i stand still (no spin) i am able to throw 98meters. but when i spin i cant seem to get the disk to go "up" in the air. (i only hit 70-80m) I think i lean forward, but i cant seem to fix it
i bench 105, and squat 145, i dont know what my clean is.
from sounds of it you probably have you shoulders opening too soon and are probably standing more so so you are loosing that "coil" effect. so learn to keep low and shoulders closed till the throw especially since your not that strong you need to use what you have as much as possible. as for the relase you have to learn to come around and get between a 35 to 45 degree relase. its hard i know while spinning but you gotta learn it
the main strength muscles involved are the pectoralis, delts, abs and obliques, calves, and hip flexors. The muscles to concentrate on first would be pecs doin exercises like flys an bench. Then your delts with lat raises to the side an front. Abs and obliques would just be any workout for that group that you're comforatble with. Calves an hip flexors would be box jumps (like in the vid) claf raises, frog hops, anf quick sprints. other than that just practice spin an release.
yea that's the main thing that you know that. cuz there's a kid who goes to a rival school of mine an if you saw him on the street or in a mall you think he was a total nerd, but this past year at regionals he beat his older brother's record at his school with a throw of like 168 somethin an all he ever practices is technique
yeah we have a guy at our school who broke 210' in practice as a sophomore. the kid is a beast. but his max bench is like 170.. haha he can't squat much at all either.
It's nice to see there is still dedication to the sport. I use to throw shot and discus back in the late 80's. I'm getting older and still wish I could throw. I'm behind you 100% man. Good luck.
Very inspiring man. Love the box jumps. I am a Highland games thrower. Just starting to dabble in ply'os for more power . I would love to know your training routine. Please post . God bless GK
this may be a stupid question, I dont know anything about the sport, but how do they accurately tell where the discus landed? is a judge just eyeballing the spot it hits the ground? because when it comes down to a matter of centimeters between 1st and 2nd, i dont see how that can be accurate.
It is not that accurate. It is a visual confirmation, with the judge looking over the turf, trying to find a mark suggesting the mark closest to the throwing circle (the back end of the disc). I have seen judges miss the mark by a meter, yet medals are sorted by cm.
seriously, if i broke a record by one inch, i would fell terrible because that could've just been a marking error. they need to make a way to make marking more accurate
you seem very strong but dont seem to be throwing super far. im 19 and thrown 60.46, with pretty light weights. Its all about limb speed and technique. obviously to throw 70 metres and be world class you have to be super strong but throwing any thing up to 60 metres weights are not a massive issue. acchilles1987 what the hell are you talking about?! "With a squat of 330 lbs and a bench of 275, I do not think 50 meters is possible" 50 metres is nothing! i can do that standing and im weak as shit!
Hey John, I've been doing cleans and snatches a lot since we last talked and I'm doing well with those. But I've been having problems with my discus. I know whats going wrong, but I'm having trouble fixing it and our coach isnt around in the off-season. Coming around that first turn, I start to lean back, causing me to fall out of the ring and lose lots of distance. If you could spare some time to help that would be great.
I can also get a video of myself if that would help.
man.. I'm so envious of the vids. I can't seem to master the full turn. I'm sort of stuck in the South African. I know I need to be able to do the full turn for me to improve my throws. Also, my strength needs a few improvements:
Squats-185lbs
Cleans-85
Snatch-70
Deadlift-140
Bench-90(not so sure as I don't do this anymore)
Btw, I'm an 18 yr old female in my 2nd year in college. I was just wondering if those max weights are good enough or do I need to work harder in weight training? Thanks=)
im a junior nxt year and i can squat around the same powercleans 1 have 135 we dont do the snatch or the deadlift but i do 115 on the bech and if you dont mind look up standing shoulder press it helps a lot
Thanks! Also, we do clean and jerk every now and then.. It's basically the cleans plus a military press(I think that's how you call it..) I think it is pretty helpful too but quite tiring to do..=)
A lot of throwers get "stuck" in the South African, which means they lose the forward drive and go back to spinning like a top when they revert to the proper position in the back of the circle. What you need is BALANCE on the left leg. I suggest raising your left arm and shifting weight sooner and more powerfully over the left leg once the discus starts its counter clockwise motion.
I think that with time and improved technique you should be able to throw 50 meters or so. But as you keep treaining for years and as you get stronger and get better technique your distance is limitless.
Don't just try to muscle it out there. Start really slowly and work your way up. Keep practicing. You can make a really good thrower if you have great balance
I am afraid that I do not agree. With a squat of 330 lbs and a bench of 275, I do not think 50 meters is possible. 43 meters, perhaps? You need more strength to throw 50.
It's not the maximum lift, it's how fast you can execute the lift. When it comes to the throws, power clean strength is more important than both bench and squat.
Yes, power is more important than rmax. But there is a limit to the throw, and strength is part of that equation. Do you really know people who only squat 330 who throw 50 meters? I only threw the 2K 49 meters when I was squatting 720 lbs and benching 310 lbs, but I am only 5'11" tall. I have never coached anyone to throw nearly that far with such a small squat.
I threw 52m with a 2k discus with a 250 bench and a bad elbow on my throwing arm that limited my ability to train. Bench is a pissing contest and has little to do with anyhting. Also, I threw over 50m while i was only squatting 315. Being explosive is a lot more than strength.
Reading your comments it seems like you're treating throwing like football, where you need to bench and squat crushing weight to be able to throw far. Cleans and snatches are much more important; this is because throwing isnt about brute strength but grace and quickness in the ring.
Also, obviously theres something with my technique. Any tips you could give would be appreciated, and also, any particular lifts you have found that help your distance, please let me know.
The most important lifts are going to be lifts that incorporate your whole body. The power clean and snatches are good and definately incoprorate twisting core motions.
Thanks for the help, John. Our old Shotput/Discus coach was also one of our football linemen coaches (I think they just kinda stuck him in there) But recently he quit and we have had a new coach that is having us focus much less on bench, squat, etc. and focus a lot more on cleans, snatches, core strength, plyonmetrics, etc.
He has made some major adjustments in the way I am lifting and some minor changes in the way I am throwing, and it is working very well. Thanks for the tips!
Just one question. I'm not criticizing you, not in the slightest, but I'm a sophomore; I bench 315, squat 450, and I can only throw the discus 130, shotput 45(ish).
Given its my first year throwing this year, but I mean, damn, you can huck that thing and your bench and squat goals arent far from what I'm at now.
My cleans are fairly weak, not anywhere near my bench and squat, probably close to 185 max, and Ive never tried snatches. Is that the problem?
You are very strong for being a sophomore. But as you noticed the most important lift that you could be doing is the weakest of all of your lifts. Being good at the power clean and the snatch will greatly improve your ability to transfer your strength into the discus. I am not much stronger than you on the bench and squat but I can clean over 300 pounds and snatch over 225. So I would keep working hard and try to incoprorate the clean and snatch into your workout. Keep me posted.
Nice Power Cleans, I can't do that much, but I'm a Junior in High School and I can squat 480? Lol. :) And my bench is a decent 200. So is that good? Lol. My power cleans are around 160. Pretty crappy huh? And my snatches are around 145. Kind of sucks but I have a lot more training to do.
hi jhon ^^ your video are super and very well do,i love the music you put iin this video and...you can give me the name of this music please,i'm french so if don't understand....you know why ^^
wow 191 ft. congrats. Great videos man, they inspire me to train harder. Im trying to walk on my schools track team next year. You have a lot of power, and looks like there is more to gain. I wish I had somewhere with the right equipment for olympic lifts, thats where im weak at.
Thanks for all of the views, ratings, and comments. I just wanted to let you know that I hit a HUGE new Personal Best this weekend. I threw the discus 58.30 meters or 191'3" at the NCCAA national meet!!!!!
great well i wish u luck this month, i also have NCAA nationals this month.. so im hoping to hit the trials mark in the hammer lol thanks or replying bud!
its all about ur legs and hip in throwing not ur upper body really cuz u have to be fast threw the ring and have a good relase and have ur hips open and a good hip pop at the end i say bowman has it all man.
first off great video and great workout. i am in the 8th grade and my football coach is making me do shot and discus i can throw a discus 91 something. i know i can do more but i do not know how to hold and realese the discus correctly it is always wobbly and i was wonndering if u can tell or make a video on how to.
Make sure that the discus is comeing off of your index finger. As for the wobblyness... it just takes hundreds and maybe even thousands of throws to get the release down. It is something that you have to practice a lot and eventually you will figure it out.
When I was a junior in high school I was a thrower and I started to run the 110 high hurdles. I ended up doing pretty good at them and I qualified for the state meet. When I was a senior my coach had me practice hurdles a lot more than the discus and consequently I did not throw as far... but it did pay off in the hurdles because I ended up being the Ohio State Champion in the 110 HH. My Personal Best for my senior was 14.33 seconds.
nice video. I go to Stout in Wisconsin, part of the NCAA DIII. my first meet this year as a Jr. is 51.05m, my PR. I have some of the same goals, hopefully i'll see you at qualifiers in 2012
Great Video man, I'm 19 yrs from St. Lucia (Thats in the caribbean) and i'm aspiring to get a scholarship to throw in the states, competiting in these kind of meets (MAIA) is what ive been dreaming about ever since i can remember. This is the ultimate motivation to train harder, though we may not have the best facilities, any advice for a struggling athlete?
It takes Vision, Passion, and Determination to reach your dreams. There are many people out there that can dream but only a frew actually reach them. Continue to peruse your dreams in the presense of adversity and continue to push harder each day. Be a student of your event and make every effort to be a stronger faster thrower. That is the kind of vision that it takes to reach the dreams that you have. Good luck to you and if I can help in any other way just let me know. God Bless!

i bench 105, and squat 145, i dont know what my clean is.
any help is greatly apreciated!!!!!
basch451 2 years ago
srry its 98 feet not meters
basch451 2 years ago
from sounds of it you probably have you shoulders opening too soon and are probably standing more so so you are loosing that "coil" effect. so learn to keep low and shoulders closed till the throw especially since your not that strong you need to use what you have as much as possible. as for the relase you have to learn to come around and get between a 35 to 45 degree relase. its hard i know while spinning but you gotta learn it
jakemillyard 2 years ago
You say your leaning forward so make sure your hip is leading your shoulder before you release

I need to get stronger, i'm throwing about 150' or 160' in the disc. i'm 17 yrs. old and i squat 305, bench 255, power clean 220.
nothin near what you lift though... haha
throwerfan22 2 years ago
LOL u dont need to be strong to throw amazing disk its all tech
MikSane 2 years ago
the main strength muscles involved are the pectoralis, delts, abs and obliques, calves, and hip flexors. The muscles to concentrate on first would be pecs doin exercises like flys an bench. Then your delts with lat raises to the side an front. Abs and obliques would just be any workout for that group that you're comforatble with. Calves an hip flexors would be box jumps (like in the vid) claf raises, frog hops, anf quick sprints. other than that just practice spin an release.
theoneandonlybillow 2 years ago
i know you don't need to be strong, but in order to take your throwing to the next level and get really good, it helps to be strong.
i know it's not necessary though
throwerfan22 2 years ago
yea that's the main thing that you know that. cuz there's a kid who goes to a rival school of mine an if you saw him on the street or in a mall you think he was a total nerd, but this past year at regionals he beat his older brother's record at his school with a throw of like 168 somethin an all he ever practices is technique
theoneandonlybillow 2 years ago
yeah we have a guy at our school who broke 210' in practice as a sophomore. the kid is a beast. but his max bench is like 170.. haha he can't squat much at all either.

that was amazing... i adore the sport of discus... good luck to u and all u do.. :)
rosbram 3 years ago
this may be a stupid question, I dont know anything about the sport, but how do they accurately tell where the discus landed? is a judge just eyeballing the spot it hits the ground? because when it comes down to a matter of centimeters between 1st and 2nd, i dont see how that can be accurate.
hybridman 3 years ago
It is not that accurate. It is a visual confirmation, with the judge looking over the turf, trying to find a mark suggesting the mark closest to the throwing circle (the back end of the disc). I have seen judges miss the mark by a meter, yet medals are sorted by cm.
Acchilles1987 3 years ago
yeah thats what I thought. just eyeballing the grass/turf cant be that accurate
hybridman 3 years ago
seriously, if i broke a record by one inch, i would fell terrible because that could've just been a marking error. they need to make a way to make marking more accurate

you seem very strong but dont seem to be throwing super far. im 19 and thrown 60.46, with pretty light weights. Its all about limb speed and technique. obviously to throw 70 metres and be world class you have to be super strong but throwing any thing up to 60 metres weights are not a massive issue. acchilles1987 what the hell are you talking about?! "With a squat of 330 lbs and a bench of 275, I do not think 50 meters is possible" 50 metres is nothing! i can do that standing and im weak as shit!
bmorse5492 3 years ago
Hey John, I've been doing cleans and snatches a lot since we last talked and I'm doing well with those. But I've been having problems with my discus. I know whats going wrong, but I'm having trouble fixing it and our coach isnt around in the off-season. Coming around that first turn, I start to lean back, causing me to fall out of the ring and lose lots of distance. If you could spare some time to help that would be great.
I can also get a video of myself if that would help.
Thanks
PewPewLazerViking 3 years ago
Thanks=)
smile4me423 3 years ago
im a junior nxt year and i can squat around the same powercleans 1 have 135 we dont do the snatch or the deadlift but i do 115 on the bech and if you dont mind look up standing shoulder press it helps a lot
KenyaBabies 3 years ago
Thanks! Also, we do clean and jerk every now and then.. It's basically the cleans plus a military press(I think that's how you call it..) I think it is pretty helpful too but quite tiring to do..=)
smile4me423 3 years ago
A lot of throwers get "stuck" in the South African, which means they lose the forward drive and go back to spinning like a top when they revert to the proper position in the back of the circle. What you need is BALANCE on the left leg. I suggest raising your left arm and shifting weight sooner and more powerfully over the left leg once the discus starts its counter clockwise motion.
Acchilles1987 3 years ago
I'm a Hungarian thrower I started to throw just 2 or 3 months ago, my bench press is 275, squat is 330, snatch is 160 clean and jerk is 210.
I can throw only 35 metres with the 2kg discus:S
How big could I throw with this strength if I would have perfect tehnique?
Thanks
adamnfl 3 years ago
I think that with time and improved technique you should be able to throw 50 meters or so. But as you keep treaining for years and as you get stronger and get better technique your distance is limitless.
johnbowman70 3 years ago
Don't just try to muscle it out there. Start really slowly and work your way up. Keep practicing. You can make a really good thrower if you have great balance
mortakai545 3 years ago
Power isn't everything my bench press is 80 and i'm 15 and I throw 2kg discus about 35m too.
millenium993 3 years ago
It is not possible to throw 35m with a bench of 80.
Acchilles1987 3 years ago
I am afraid that I do not agree. With a squat of 330 lbs and a bench of 275, I do not think 50 meters is possible. 43 meters, perhaps? You need more strength to throw 50.
Acchilles1987 3 years ago
It's not the maximum lift, it's how fast you can execute the lift. When it comes to the throws, power clean strength is more important than both bench and squat.
bamhammer 3 years ago
Yes, power is more important than rmax. But there is a limit to the throw, and strength is part of that equation. Do you really know people who only squat 330 who throw 50 meters? I only threw the 2K 49 meters when I was squatting 720 lbs and benching 310 lbs, but I am only 5'11" tall. I have never coached anyone to throw nearly that far with such a small squat.
Acchilles1987 3 years ago
I threw 52m with a 2k discus with a 250 bench and a bad elbow on my throwing arm that limited my ability to train. Bench is a pissing contest and has little to do with anyhting. Also, I threw over 50m while i was only squatting 315. Being explosive is a lot more than strength.

Sorry, buddy, it was a true weight, done many times -- but on the Smith machine, not free. I could not do that free. I had 30" thighs.
Acchilles1987 3 years ago
720 hack squat many, many times. On a machine.
aeiou99999 2 years ago
Reading your comments it seems like you're treating throwing like football, where you need to bench and squat crushing weight to be able to throw far. Cleans and snatches are much more important; this is because throwing isnt about brute strength but grace and quickness in the ring.

Also, obviously theres something with my technique. Any tips you could give would be appreciated, and also, any particular lifts you have found that help your distance, please let me know.
Thanks man and great vid.
PewPewLazerViking 3 years ago
The most important lifts are going to be lifts that incorporate your whole body. The power clean and snatches are good and definately incoprorate twisting core motions.
johnbowman70 3 years ago
Thanks for the help, John. Our old Shotput/Discus coach was also one of our football linemen coaches (I think they just kinda stuck him in there) But recently he quit and we have had a new coach that is having us focus much less on bench, squat, etc. and focus a lot more on cleans, snatches, core strength, plyonmetrics, etc.
He has made some major adjustments in the way I am lifting and some minor changes in the way I am throwing, and it is working very well. Thanks for the tips!
PewPewLazerViking 3 years ago
Dang man, Youre good.
PewPewLazerViking 3 years ago

I would say for being in Junior High School you are really strong. When I entered High School I don't think I could do half that!!!

most of the best throwers are really good runners. Powerful legs is what gets you to pop right before your throw and get the discus flying

its all about ur legs and hip in throwing not ur upper body really cuz u have to be fast threw the ring and have a good relase and have ur hips open and a good hip pop at the end i say bowman has it all man.

first off great video and great workout. i am in the 8th grade and my football coach is making me do shot and discus i can throw a discus 91 something. i know i can do more but i do not know how to hold and realese the discus correctly it is always wobbly and i was wonndering if u can tell or make a video on how to.
BiGdshadow9889onps3 3 years ago
Make sure that the discus is comeing off of your index finger. As for the wobblyness... it just takes hundreds and maybe even thousands of throws to get the release down. It is something that you have to practice a lot and eventually you will figure it out.

Just Wondering, why did ur throws go down from junior to senior? Injury?
bayteee 3 years ago
When I was a junior in high school I was a thrower and I started to run the 110 high hurdles. I ended up doing pretty good at them and I qualified for the state meet. When I was a senior my coach had me practice hurdles a lot more than the discus and consequently I did not throw as far... but it did pay off in the hurdles because I ended up being the Ohio State Champion in the 110 HH. My Personal Best for my senior was 14.33 seconds.

God Bless!
