I loved this commercial in the early to mid-1970's.....as a kid, I didn't know what Cold Duck was but I new Christmas was coming when I saw this commercial.
There were actually two versions of this commercial, though both looked alike with just a few exceptions. The second one from the 1980s had champagne glasses which were vertical in shape, and The Human Octopus was replaced by Alligator Arms. I much prefer this one from the 1970s. Heck, I remember this from watching NFL telecasts on CBS. A million thanks, AmberVon!
I'm drinking Andre Spumante as I'm watching this video. It's an easy-drinking, sweet sparkling wine. Who knew you could get tasty wine for under $6 a bottle?
Cold Duck was sort of like a fruity champagne. It was good is you weren't an expert on wines. I had it a few times -- sort of a cheap, fun drink to get silly people drunk. I don't even know if they still make it, but the champagne is still around.
This was one of my two favorite commercials at Christmas time as a kid cause I love Carol of the Bells. The other was the Norelco Santa. I was reminded of them a lot all these years, and never thought I'd see them again, then just for the heck it I thought 'try youtube' and here they both are. I just wish the sound were better. How could ANYONE have obtained a copy of it? VCR's weren't even close to being around yet. I even had an older woman crush on the blonde at the end, my fav slide!
Hah! I had a cousin named "Andre" and (he was quite a bit younger than I) once he got a toy peg set with this hammer-like thing, and he whacked my dad ib the face with it. (This was in about 1975.) After that, we used to say "you'd better NOT bring home Andre for the holidays."
When I was a kid in the 70s, I remember Mom loved to serve Cold Duck to her friends. I was occasionally allowed to have a sip (remember when parents could make that decision w/out Big Brother dragging them out of the house by the nape of their necks?) It wasn't bad. I've used a bottle to add effervesence to a sangria pitcher before. But I'm a grownup now...Moet, please.
This is one of the only commercials that I remember that used a lot of still photographs instead of video clips. Very well done and effective. I mean, I still think of this old ad when the holidays approach, so it did its job !

The only reason why people are posting on this commercial after 30 years in circulation is because it is irritating. The music and toasting glasses - over and over and over again. This particular rendition of Ring Christmas Bells is horrible. It is like the music in The Exorcist or something.
Beyond that Andre Cold Duck and Andre "Champagne" is mildly carbonated piss water. I would be insulted to be invited to anyone serving this stuff at a party
I have a major question about this commercial....does anyone know who this version of CAROL OF THE BELLS was by? It's always been my favorite version, but I have NEVER been able to find out who did it. Any answers out there?
@arashitokattun I did a little research and found this in Yahoo Answers (edited to fit here):
Remember the "Andre" champagne commercial from the 70s? Well that recording of Carol of the Bells is the definitive version (in my book anyway). And it is featured on the 1997 Sony reissue of the "The Joy of Christmas" featuring the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the New York Philharmonic conducted by the great Leonard Bernstein.
They ran this ad every year for a long time and it was one of my favorites, quite tastefully done (and unusual for TV!). Glad to view it again after all this time.
This is my favorite Christmas commercial ever. There was a newer version where some of the guests were younger. The only problem with the holidays is after they are over the next three months suck. Too cold and too much snow. Blah...
@petals49 You're right about both the ad and the January to April. But the ones I remember were newer, with kids in the ad. I remember them when I used to watch Superstars and Wide World of Sports when I was a kid.
What a great ad. The other day I was chosen to bring some affordable champagne to a party and I saw Andre there on the shelf, and the truth be told, I chose it because of this ad! (I'm very serious!) Very cool nostalgic ad, and the champagne is quite good for $5.47/bottle!
How I miss the 70's and 80's what a great time. Does anyone remember the Riunite on ice commercials? Thanks for this great post, such wonderful holiday memories .
When I start hearing the Carol of the Bells it brings me back to when I was a kid and these ads for Andre were on tv. You knew Christmas was around the corner. I started playing some Christmas music today and was thinking of this but couldn't recall the name Andre. Thanks for the blast to the past.
Thank you so much for this, AmberVon! I haven't seen this classic Andre Ad since my school days. Usually, it was on CBS during NFL football. You brought back a great memory!
Wow. Even Orson Wells knew what sort of glass to drink sparkling wine from. Still, a nice look back at wine consumption a generation ago. Thanks, AmberVon, for another fascinating look back.
I loved this commercial! Like someone else said, it reminds me of my childhood. This great commercial was like a Christmas tradition. It sticks with me going on 35 years later. It's where I first heard "Ring Christmas Bells", or whatever that song is called. Between this and Windsong by Prince Matchabelli and "Noelco"--even our name says
Christmas...they all are so evocative of being a kid in the 70s and Christmas being around the corner. Awesome. Thanks for posting.
This was my mom and my favorite commercial when I was little. We'd call to each other "The Commercial!!" and go running through the house not to miss it. We lost her three years ago -- I'm so happy you put this up for us to enjoy!!!
This is from the 1980's, there was another one from the 1970's

Here in Canada it was a Spumanti Bambino wine commercial and Mott's Clamato (It brings out the party in YOU) radio spots, ad nauseum.
Ah, Christmas :).
