The deck is pronounced "gar-rard" (as in garage) though, very common this side of the pond. they made the famous SP25 which every student had in the early 70's.
That amplifier looks a lot like one that Olson Electronics (60s tube amplifier) sold with their logo on it (a sticker no doubt). I don't know if you heard of Olson's down in TX, but it was mail order from Akron Ohio, and they had stores in OH and other states..

dust on the hot tube will burn off
makeing a hot smell like dry sortch when you first turn the heat on in the winter is what you smelling if it a aicity burnt plastic or
hot metal smell then yes it is a woren or faulty cap some if so just arc out like a fuse
if woren without damnageing compoits next to it
