Well the prices may have rised, so it's best to get in contact with the people from the mongol rally website. They will give you an up to date price list... appart from the mongol rally fees and the visas, the rest is dead cheep...
Hey, considering going for this but massively confused by prices. It's £714 upfront, £800 deposit for a car and whatever else you gotta spend on food, petrol, etc?
If it was a 4 man team how much do you reckon we'd need each?
Is it free to cross the channel from England to the continent?
@alphados12 : Well the cars were not big or anything. And there are no small jeeps. They are cheap japanese 4x4, that are around 1 liter. Now it's true that you may end up paying a fine for the few extra cc your car may have.... but in general, as long as your car is crap, you can do it :)
@OneMoreProd And how many of them were engine laillures? My experience is that the Cleon-engines are pretty reliable. :-) I've owned a Renault 9 (was my first car) and later on I also owned a Volvo 66, which had the 1108cc Cleon engine. (Same as the Renault 5 and 4 "GTL" engine. Only a different carburettor).
@Skoda130 : The main issue were electric problemes, then cooling system, then suspension and finally the chassis that gave up. But I would still do it in a renault 4 if I had to do it again.
A friend and I ware looking at getting into the 2010 rally (if all goes well). Since getting mroe serious about doing this, I've watched a ton of the videos from the events, and I have to say that you guys probably have the best one to date. Great job!
Thank you so much and good luck for 2010! It will change your life! Please keep on sharing our video. We need as many viewer as possible as this will help us getting sponsors for our next challenge!
Very little... The renault 4 is car easy to fix, and people along the way, will always be happy to help you. Very often, we had people working on our cars for hours, without asking for anything. Just be kind with the people you meet, you will be surprised by their generosity!
Yes there are a lot if interaction with mongolians! As there are no propoer roads and no real hotels, you rely a lot on their kindness. And, thanks god, they are extremly kind and generous. Not very talkative, and almost shy, but very generous and friendly. The best about this trip is meeting the people so easily. If you had a massive 4x4 I'm not sure you could approach them that easily. Being over exposed to risks like you are in a small car, make it easier to approach people.
That's not a problem. There was a few americans who did it. Just show up a week before departure, get a car in ebay... and roll on! If you join the mongol rally forum then you'll find people to help you! Really worth every penny!
hey guys, doin the rally in '10, lookin' for tips. i'm wondering how you guys got donations from sponsors! like, the stickers and all? i'm completely clueless as to how to begin this.
Well, we didn't get many sponsors... We did contact a few companies, but the problem is that no one really care about having its stickers on a dusty car lost in mongolia... Still, we contacted a sticker company and told them we wanted the LONDON TO MONGOLIA stickers spread over the car. Instead they could put all the stickers they wanted on our car... For them it was not much work and they did it. We added a few stickers from a workshop that helped us ( a little) and that's it really...
We did the Mongol Rally 2008, If anyone's up for doing this sort of thing then join the website "loba(dot)webs(dot)com" only just setting up really but if you get a sense of adventure its the site for you!
Hey Just got recommended this video well I must admit very well put together Im sure you guys had a cool adventure. Im so envious.. trying to get one of my pals interested is easier said than done,,, greta video
I think im not the first to congratulated you that was really amazing!! I know people who has made the rally with a sj410 and maybe it's better for the mongol road's jjaa. But your car has resisted such a hummer!!what's the soundtrack's names??
amazing video thanks for share it (sorry but my english is not really good)
guys awesome video i am rely jealous!!!!!i am planning to take part on the 2010 rally i donot think i am going to make it for 2009!!!!i have to ask you if you had to bribe anyone??and if you had any knowledge about mechanics?
Good for you! What car are you taking? We didn't have to bribe anyone, but that was a choice. As we were asked quite often, but we always felts like we were not in a rush and that we were in our right. So by pretending to be really dum, we never gave anything away. (Pretending that you don't understand what they are asking you, works really well! :) And for mechanics, I spent some times on forums to have at least some basic knowledge, but appart from that we were firstimers!
thats a good advice!i was thinking of a 2cv but i read there is a new rule:the car must be not older than 10 years so iam thinking of a micra.any other advice?
Hey! Congratulation for joining the rally! I'm sure you'll love it! Of course our R4 made it to Ulaan Bataar! No much was left working, but it made it! Good luck Baatar Boys!!!
Just got in for the 2009 rally cannot bloody wait, If it's anything like this i am gonna be in my element! love the power that shouting and roaring gives you! good work boys, i wonder if the c4 made it to ulaan baatar? i may never know! watch out for the Baatar Boys next year!
ide pick a suzuki sj 410 as there under 1000cc and two wheel drive for the road & four wheel drive for the trickier bits! good on you lads, just wish i was 20 years younger! dont think my body would get to Folkstone!
its not about getting there, but getting there in the crappiest car possible :) a proper offroader like the sj410 is "almost" cheating :) and one can never get too old for a little adventure :)
Hi! Most of the cars make it in time for the party which about a month and a week later (from what I remember) If you have your visas, and a reliable car (Not sure if Micra's are better though...) you can do it pretty quickly. You can also take the Russian route which is really fast. A guy did it in 20 days last year!
Join the mongol rally website to get more feedbacks from people. Thanks for making this video popular, we need people to watch it, as it will help to get sponsors for the next one!
Well, the micra has been labelled "insanely reliable" by some people, so I reckon we might go for it since this is our first go ever at something like this.
So you took the southern route? So far, that's our plan, too. We just think it'll be more interesting in terms of people and countryside, what with deserts and mountains and all that.
Maybe the Micra is good to go then. I'm just wondering if it's high enough... You wouldn't believe the size of the pot holes you'll see in Mongolia and Kazakhstan... I think the southern route is definitely the best. Kazakhstan is a must anyway. By far our favorite country of the trip. If you are in a rush, you can go through Russia, although I don't really understand the point of driving on the highway for days and days...
Amazing. My girlfriend and I are planning to do it in 2009. Seeing that it took you 51 days, do you have an idea what the average time was for a team with a more reliable, standard car (thinking of a micra)? (and with visas ready..) The thing is I don't think we can spare that much time unless we quit our jobs. Cheers, -Phil-
Hi, thanks for your comment! The music is "Oh my god" from the Kaiser Chief ! Really good track which was the only one left on our broken iPod. So it's even more appropriate :)
In Total we spent around €8000 for both of us, including price of the car, rally fees, and prep of the car. Our Renault 4L was bought for only €400 on eBay! Then we forcked a bit less than €1000 for preparation. Rally fee was around €1500, and most of the money went on visas (And to fligh back from Ulaan Bataar)... Food and accomodation is dead cheap. Seriously, just do it, the world is changing fast! Good luck!
Well, orientation is quite easy in fact. You need a compass and a map. Then you always find someone to ask (at least once a day), and if you don't, just follow the most rescent tracks made by the tires from other cars... It always ends up somewhere... Anyway, if you ask your way in Mongolia, the only answer they will give you is "Straight on!" so good luck :)
We left the car in Ulaan Bataar. This is part of the "Mongol Rally" rules. You have to leave what's left of your car to a charity... Not too sure they got something out of our car! :) We ended up on the side as the chassis broke suddently and it dug itself in the ground. We did a complete flip over with the car!
Brilliant Video! Makes me jealous though:P. What's this about your plans for a Paris to NY rally??:D... Is there any information I can get on it at this time anywhere?
